The Ferrari Daytonas of Miami Vice

Long time since I've logged in!  My car is still under construction, it's been put on the back burner for quite some time. Now re-inspired to finish it up.

anyway I'm in Miami / Keys next month for usual visits/fishing and I remember that there is a guy who has some cars on display in a mall in south Florida somewhere, including a Daytona?

I wanted to go check it out if they are still there?  any other Daytonas  open for viewing down Miami area?

Thanks

I think the one your thinking of is a place called the swap shop in FT Lauradale, the one that has one of the testarossas there.

also what's the story with your car there? as it doesnt look like the typical replica

It's one of John Washington's Z-car based Daytonas. I posted some pics awhile back but have not logged in here for a long time. I actually bought another one in Arkansas last year, a C3 car that looked great online but when I got up there with my trailer it was a POS.  Body was well built, like a McBurnie but really couldn't identify it. I let the guy keep my deposit and went back home. Probably a good thing because my wife would have freaked with 2 of these cars in the garage.

let me know if this link works..

hmm I thought it was one of the 240's, looks like its coming along well.

the car that you skipped out on, it wasnt sitting in a lot, red with a missing headlight cover was it?

It was a red car built on a 69 C3 with ugly 80's era Porsche electric seats and the guy had cut out the floor board on driver side and elevated it so his wife could see the road, it was butchered. Had its headlight covered with cheap crystal clear plexi-glass, and side marker lense covers made out of orange plexi, really cheesy. but the body was first class. ran like crap, burned oil, tranny slipped etc. which is no problem for me but it was described as 99pct show car condition.  not sure what kind of shows he was talking about!  I wanted a driver while I finished the one im building and didn't want 2 dismantled cars spread out in my shop. It was up in Little Rock.  I saw it pop up on the internet a few weeks later with a wholesaler  in Arizona or someplace so I guess he sold it.  5 years ago I would have bought it, but now I already have a project/s..

I was really disappointed, because although the vette based cars are not the most accurate looking Daytona replicas, they are WAY more cool! And I always wanted to build a Miami Vice car, not necessarily a Daytona replica. The Z car version is probably truer to the dimensions of a real Daytona, but not nearly as cool!

true plus the amount of stuff you can do to a corvette is quite unbelievable, you think of it, it can be done, from dropping a ZR1 motor into a C3

to complete replacing and modernizing the chasis.

http://www.newmancarcreations.com/63-82-corvette/

http://www.streetshopinc.com/frontpagefeatured/1968-1982-c3-replacement-chassis.html

kind of the ultimate car really

although utimately its all about keeping it on the ground, as its easy to get carried away and then end up with essentally just another souless modern motor like this jag mark 2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JFeduaJGMI

where once he gets into the bits about the interior your just left wondering, Why?

and if you have a bad base car like what you described with that clapped out car you went to see, your not going to have a fun car, your going to have a bill pit and by the time your done you'll hate the thing so much you never want to see it again.

so its a good thing you skipped on it, or that would have been five nightmares in one.

and ultimately when it comes to this kind of stuff I made this base list recently of the things that would be need to be done to retain the original feel of the car and keep it on the ground resto mod wise with the corvette based ones

as to bring it up to snuff in the durability and reliablilty fields, along with some modern touches

Check the ladder frame over in accordance with this

replace the brakes with modern units from brembo

rack and pinion steering from a C4, maybe put the super shocks of a Renaut Clio on it

new electric cooling fans, be cool air con, new electronic ignition and distributor,

maybe a new carb and all manual brakes and steering or limited assist, as to make it feel like you've earned your fun, as my modern car can dance, but its so effortless it just doesnt feel as fun as the less power assisted car that came before it, to the point where you need to drive like a maniac to have any sense of speed.

although you need a medium to light clutch for modern traffic and servos on all gears, as on the jaguars of the 1960's that drove people nuts not having a servo on the e type and Mark 2's first gear

to the point where inspector morse always skipped first and just stuck to the rest of the gears for driving his.

and with the clutch you dont want to have that I have to punch the floor with my foot to get it to engage feel the countach has.

and the rest would be asthetics, and well I kinda found two base cars for that already that I'm in love with frankly:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/photos-automobiles/3033789029 - Mcburnie

http://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0050/index.html - Rowley with headlight doors, as theres just something about headlight doors that makes everything better, from the Daytona to the porsche 944 and the Corvette C5, its just something you dont see anymore that makes it special

as for the choice between manual and automatic itself, if you want to enjoy the car on a day by day basis auto is the way to go atleast where I live, otherwise I'd be trying to manage the radio, the cluch and the gearleaver all at the same time while dealing with modern traffic.

and where I live you can barely top 45, so think about how many changes between 1st and 2nd that would be, unless I had it geared up properly for it.

plus I must admit, I keep wondering how a C3 daytona replica would look and accomidate the windshield of a C4 vette, as I swear the C4 has the same side windows as the C3, just cut different for the more angled windshield.

So after the website crash/scare I was worried I might lose touch with you guys...we should start a group on Facebook or something.  Minor panic.  Okay, so finally I have some pics of my cover since there were quite a few questions.  This is a Covercraft Weathershield HP Car Cover ordered from Auto Anything for a 1971 Ferrari Daytona Spyder.  It came to $317.95, free shipping, and arrived quickly.  It's slick like a windbreaker and so far in the dry has kept dust and dirt off of the paint.  As you can see it's in a shared garage and gets rain water, leaf blower debris, and other elements on a regular basis.  It's first rain was yesterday and today and it's going to a car show this Saturday so I'll have to report back later how well it held up to water.  What I can say is it's a tight, snug fit all around, it covers the front down very low, but the sides juuuuust cover to the bottom of the paint.  My last cover went a little lower, but I can't say it's really detrimental...all the paint is covered and it's got elastic around the front and the back.  Take a look at the pic and you'll get a pretty good idea, overall I'm pretty happy with it, it was non-returnable so I did HOURS of research on the web of different manufacturers and read tons of reviews.  At this point I'm just thrilled I don't have buyers remorse lol.

That is a nice cover. Mine is garage kept so only needs protection from dust (not rain or snow) so I'm wondering if you ran across other covers perhaps priced accordingly only for dust?

hmm actually the camera car is using the car cover of the Ferrari 365 BB itself,  we tracked it down via the serial number camera provided which liked up on the T ruttlands site, as T ruttlands used to be ferrari atlanta, back when ferrari wasnt really selling anything in the US. back in the late 70's early 80's so its good to know that either works really

Camera also thought that the C4 car cover would work on it, I dont know if we tried that though.

and jesus, you really got yourself a beautiful car man

I have a cover for my car made of a nylon/parachute type material. It's blue and is as light as a feather, so it's not for outside. It has an elastic base which fits snug over the bottom of the car. I used to park my two cars in underground parking at my building and the cover was on my good car all the time and it kept the dust off very well. The fabric is so light you can go to a laundramat and use the big washer and dryer to wash it once or twice a year.

When I went to drive the vehicle I would grab the cover and start rolling it up in my hand and it would roll up to a small package about the size of a small throw pillow. It actually had a pouch attached with a zipper and you just shoved the entire contents into the bag, zip it up and throw it in the back seat until you park again.

I bought it at a car show and it was about 125 bucks.

I used to have a big beige car covers for my Lincoln that you can buy at any Canadian tire Store across Canada, but it got dried out and ripped in a few places and it was really heavy! I think I paid almost 300 bucks for that one but the blue one for my other car is twice the cover for half the price.

Hmm I don't seem to be able to find that one or the code. I'm looking for one that would be form fitting and lightweight.

Your cover does sound nice and I like the lightweight and portability aspect so when I go somewhere for an extended period I can cover it if needed. But finding one that is sized for this car is a challenge.

Actually the CoverCraft website itself has a great matrix explaining the difference between all their covers, from most weather resistant to indoor only.  So far I'm very happy with mine, although some seem to be very opinionated about Brand A vs Brand B when it comes to car covers.  Here's their grid: http://www.carcoverusa.com/Covercraft-Car-Covers.html.

In other news, I have a friend who organizes a car show in Dallas every year.  He loves all things automotive, and he set it up so I parked with the "real" Ferraris.  Oddly enough, every time I look at this pic I still like mine better than the real ones (there were two 458s, a 360, a F512M Testarossa, and a 328).  Even when the Lambo parked next to me lol.  Hearing about their maintenance costs made me feel even better.  See what ya think...

Yeah with the cars there the 328 is just ruined by that blocky bumper, as I also saw one in person on the way to my UTAH class up here in a traffic jam  and the car looks beautiful except for that.

which is probably why the 308 is worth double the TR right now

the 512 M, the only bit I really like about that is the front bumper, athough props for them trying something completely different with it, and it does have its charm  the 360 and the diablo, I have a soft spot for both of those as the 360 is pre pug face, it was one of the first ferrari's I saw in person, and I recenty saw the 360 spider in polished up and perfect red here on a street in my hometown and damn that was beautiful

had two street kids looking at it though, as it was across from some somewhat rundown aparment complex which kinda made me abit worried -_- like dont mess with it please.

should have asked the owner who his detailer was actually.

Your Daytona looks really good with the other Ferarri's - looks like it fits in well!  Actually, I like yours best also, but I am a bit biased, I think.

Hey guys.....yea the Trutlands site is under construction????  I was looking for some rear plate lights after my Clutch job on the TR and I guess I wont be ordering from them any time soon.  They are still selling stuff on Ebay though.

Speaking of TR's.....Values are going through the roof, so Im toying with the idea of getting a Spyder as a weekend toy and mothballing the TR (only driving it in the neighborhood a couple times a month.  Once I get my cash sorted, i might post a WTB ad.  In the mean time its slim pickins out there for quality Daytonas.

you could try their Ebay store page, that's still operational, either that or contact them via phone number.

and I gotta wonder if a Certain Metcalf is responsible for the value increase -_-

as theres now a 104 thousand potental buyers for one out on the market lol

Just found another daytona video, and this has to be the second daytona replica we've come across with some unusual rims on it

http://miamiviceonline.com/index.php/topic/11522-another-miami-vice-reference-in-dexter/

as I initally thought maybe I had found the dexter one.

also this one is noteworthy as well, a remake of the scene from the pilot in a modern game, GT 6 namely

which I must admit I've never been a fan of, as I prefer something with a bit more freedom like Forza Horizon 2, but its worth highlighting nonetheless.

Eesh...can't say I like the whitewalls or the flashy gold rims.

But an interesting blue shade on the paint and seems to be in pretty good shape overall.

He does like to squeal those tires as well....lol, well I have been known to do that a time or two. :)

Just thought I'd post this here given the carborated nature of the daytona replicas, as he mentions that there is a specific kind of Extingusher to go for when it comes to Carbed Cars, CO2 I think

that way you dont put all that crap in the motor if you have to deal with a carb fire.

haha wow. when I got GT6 the thing I did was save up for a black Daytona. Even though I was thinking about doing it, I never expected anyone to actually make a Vice montage.

I have a friend who had just installed rebuilt carbs on his Hemi Challenger,  I was helping by turning the ignition key while he watched to see if fuel was coming in.  He had forgotten to tighten one of the gas fittings and when I turned the key and the car fired, it immediately had flames coming up from the loose fitting.  He had a Halon extinguisher and one quick squirt put the fire out with no residue or any damage.  He tightened the fitting and we were back in business.  After seeing that, I got a Halon extinguisher for any work in the garage.  It sounds like the CO2 extinguisher would do the same job.  I would highly recommend that anyone working on old cars have one or the other.
