Inhalt:

Ricardo Tubbs, a street cop from New York, witnesses the murder of his older brother Rafael committed by drug kingpin Calderone. He chases Calderone privately to Miami where he coincidentally interferes with local VICE cop Crockett who is also on Calderone's trail for murder and drug trafficking. Involuntarily teamed up, they start to chase Calderone together, but every time they get close to him, he escapes. It seems that there is a leak at local police...

Zusatzinformation:

The success of the pilot (production budget: 5 Mio USD) was the prerequisite for the approval of regular episodes. The long time span between pilot and first episode is due to that and also relates to test screenings and marketing measures. As soon as the success of the pilot was predictable, the episodes were ordered. Alternate title of the pilot was Brother's Keeper, working title of the series were "Gold Coast" and "Dade County Fast Lane" among others.

My Assessment:
Wertung:

Already typical VICE concept with lots of humour and quotes, but also excitement and a realistic finale. Everything is trend-setting here: fast cuts, colours, gritty bad guys, cool music and tropical ambient! The script is structured in a way that all acting characters and their relationships are introduced without losing speed or the main story line. Many close-ups are used in order to show the moods of the main characters. A well-crafted casting leads to credible characters which range from crooked cops to slimy Colombian dealers. Martin Ferrero plays a bad guy and will re-appear a few eps later as the busiest guest star, informant Izzy Moreno. Miguel Pinero, an ex-convict, was engaged by Michael Mann as consultant for plot development and the realistic portray of drug dealing habits. The story goes that he finally learned on the set that he was assigned to play the main villain. Highlights of the pilot: no happy end (as often happens in police reality) and the now famous night car drive with Phil Collins' In the air tonight! Although several crew members claim to have invented this scene, the pilot and this scene can be deemed revolutionary without exaggeration. The optics and the mood of the scene combined with the cameras mounted on every part of the car were unique and a style guide for the 80's and many following TV series like NYPD Blue, CSI and others.
