Every time I see flamingos I always think of MV. I have some flamingo sheets, and I recently got this. I realize this shirt isn’t something worn on the show, and is made in Hawaii…but it still “feels” like MV to me! It’s a little early to start wearing it where I’m at , but it’ll definitely be awesome this summer. I’ll probably wear it when watching a few episodes to celebrate the 40th anniversary. For those going to that event, hope it’s fun! But, with all the drama & conflict that has unfortunately “plagued” it…I was wondering if a certain person, that was supposedly part of the planning, was involved with causing the problems? Well, in the past few days it was confirmed on the FB page for the event. He was stated as one of the main instigators. For those who remember him (RB) on the original .org site…obviously some things/people don’t change! But, hope everyone enjoys this coming summer & the joy of having MV for the past 40 years—and looking forward to 40 more!8 points

It certainly did, in something like Magnum PI they would all be sipping tea on Higgins lawn saying what a great job they all did catching the bad guys. Spielberg endings.7 points

To promote this summer's release of Beverly Hills Cop IV, they've been airing the first three movies on TV a lot. I was watching Beverly Hills Cop II and I noticed the bad guy's henchman is Paul Guilfoyle (Milton Glanz in Death and the Lady). Then I noticed the daughter of the murder victim is Deborah Adair (the hooker in Streetwise). It turns out AndrewRemington already documented in another thread a bunch of MV actors in that movie. Deborah/Alice Adair from “Streetwise” Brian O’Connor from “Baby Blues” Dean Stockwell from “Bushido” Tom Bower from “Bushido” Paul Guilfoyle from “Death and the Lady” Chris Rock from “Missing Hours” Frank Pesce from “Home Invaders” Robert Pastorelli from “Down from the Count Part II” There's a reason: the movie had the same casting director as MV - Bonnie Timmerman. I also noticed a shootout scene that looked familiar: We see a camera shot of this same location setting up a scene in Yankee Dollar:6 points

I feel like Switek in Phil the Shill (our minute of fame for some smart ass answers to questions most people cannot even imagine like "There were in fact 8 bathrooms in Graceland and I used the one next to the kitchen .....")5 points

Given the length and depth of their relationship as well as the many interpretations people have of each party's view and the relationship overall, I think they deserve their own thread. I have mine; I've fictionalized it at ongoing length. For now I'll just say... the show was good at being subtle. And confusing. And Saundra and Don had superlative chemistry. This is only part of what happens in "Whatever Works", just for example... She's laughing at him, but she's the only one who doesn't say anything mean to him... and they're wearing practically the exact same color... And more significantly: Uh, that's not how you stand with someone you've broken up with twice and told to stay out of your life not that long ago... there is actually enough space in the conference room for you not to be touching each other, you two... (but if you want to act like it's middle school and you're sneaking around in the back of the class, who am I to stop you)?5 points

So, how long does Sonny hold on to that...? It's four years later, he's been married again, he's been horrifically widowed and is about to go murder the guy responsible... I saw this on my rewatch of "Deliver Us From Evil", and my jaw dropped. Well, on the one hand, thank you for sharing your feelings with the class, James... ...on the other... oh, Sonny, you are so screwed up!! It's not ok to have barely-dressed pictures of your exes somewhere your spouse will never see them. Less okay still if the reason she's barely dressed is entirely because of you. (And in the modern day, he'd be in triple trouble for having a picture of a coworker like that at work, no less.) As others have noted, except for a wedding picture when he's initially sitting in the boat and grieving, he has no pictures of Caitlin at all. And I don't believe for one second he views Gina's picture in some kind of innocent sentimental context (it's more like Caitlin's picture of Will), or that he just stuck it in there and forgot about it for three years. Not only is a psych Ph.D not required to decipher his feelings, she's between Rico and Billy, whom the show makes very clear are the other two most important people in his life. So for anyone who views the relationship as "Gina's hopelessly in love with him; Sonny wasn't interested/moved on long ago"... I would say the end of Season 4 puts some fairly graphic evidence to the contrary.5 points

"Whatever Works, Part II" So, going back to the beginning of this episode, there's Crockett's nameless, semi-infamous, forgettable one-night-stand. Let's look at her a little more closely... "Please call me, Sonny"/ "Please dance with me, Sonny" Does he do either? No. Is it implied he's now feeling a lot more guilty about the latter? Yes. Is it also implied he probably slept with this random woman because under the influence she somehow seemed like Gina? Also yes. Do the Gina ties stop here? They don't. So as opposed to this time, where he's completely ignoring her, has to pick up a sordid mess from unfulfilling shenanigans, and loses the Daytona to boot... ...the last time we saw Sonny in his (blue, more optimistic, not-Daytona black) underpants at the crack of dawn on the boat, he was pretty damn involved and happy. And with good reason. Everybody was in such a good mood here that despite hearing about Barbara Caro's murder minutes later, Sonny holds onto this memory (as a positive) for a long, long time. TBC. As far as "Whatever Works" is concerned, though, it's a surprising amount of stuff to catch considering it's all in the background, it's not an episode about their relationship, and Gina doesn't even have any lines! Now multiply that by 100, literally...5 points

In terms of the west coast and poverty, I can speak only to the LA area, and the building types in the impoverished neighborhoods are closer to the Miami area than NY, Chicago, or Philly. There are/were no mid-rise housing projects and many poor neighborhoods are simply older homes from before WWII that were left for the postwar suburban developments, the so called “white flight”. This is reflective of the individual city’s built history more than the level of poverty. Amongst the high and mid-rise buildings of NY and Chicago, land was expensive so the projects were more dense. I would agree with Tom also, that the 80’s and 90’s were far more violent than now as the gang wars in LA over drug trafficking became headline news then. One area of my city became notorious for the gang activity, North Long Beach. The term LBC was used in reference to the Crips who controlled the area. Snoop Dog and others wrote about these experiences in their lyrics. When I have brought this up to people, that the violent crime is considerably less today, not just here but in general in the nation, most don’t believe it, but it’s true. I also think the current model of inclusion of affordable housing throughout the community, rather than concentrating the poor in housing projects is a much better way. It has been proven more successful over the last 3 decades as well. The problem is the slow pace of this change and rising poverty rates, sadly.4 points
