  1. Not sure if this has been already addressed here, but a couple of months ago a Miami Vice documentary appeared on YouTube. It's from Indigo Gaming, a video game company/profile which I've never heard before. Surprisingly (my initial thoughts were that 90% of the time would be about video games), to my taste it was a very cool doc. Nice info, insights and cool production (and relatively long running time!). Here it is:

Season 1 - Rank your 5 Favorite Villians

Who's your top 5 favorite villians from Season One? If it's Bruce Willis as the gun running Tony Amato, Jim Zubiena as the Hit Man Argentinean assassin Ludovici Armstrong, or Burt Young as Paulie... er.. I mean Lupo Ramirez, rank your five favorites here: - - - My Top 5 Favorite villians from Season One: (Counting down from number five) 5. Afemo Omilami as Desmond Maxwell (Cool Runnin) Many will find this an odd choice considering how little screen time he had, but Afaemo showed so much screen presence and gravitas that I was left hungry for more Desmond Maxwell... sadly something we never got. But that stare of his still fills me with dread to this day! 4. John Turturro as David Traynor (Rites of Passage) I love John Turturro in almost everything he does, and he doesn't disappoint as the head of a modeling agency which is a front for a high class call-girl service. Traynor is way too smart and smooth to get caught by the law, and I love the sinister underlying to his sweet demeanor. 3. Al Israel as Guzman (Evan) Something about Al Israel's screen presense and line delivery exudes danger and betrayal in every scene he's in. Israel has this uncanny ability to make you feel like that in any moment, it can be your last. He expressed the same ability in "Scarface" and "Carlito's Way". Any character sitting across from Guzman just make me plain worry for that character... which is impressive because Al is certainly not an imposing man. 2. Dennis Farina as Albert Lombard (One Eyed Jack, Lombard) That's the price. - Anyone trying to resist that lovable Italian murderous gangster stereotype shouldn't watch Dennis Farina as Albert Lombard. Dennis is extremely likeable in this role, so much so I questioned myself - does Lombard really belong in a top 5 villian list? I must relent that, likeable or not, the extremely charismatic Farina does play a character responsible for enough numerous murders and crimes to make him eligible. And you got to love the old school gangster and his code, being pushed out by a new generation of honorless thugs. #1 Miguel Piñero as Esteban Calderone (Brother's Keeper, Calderone's Return - Part II) You can arrest me now! You're not gonna shoot me are ya? It's against the law. It's against the law! - Thanks to a wonderfully written character, the small statured yet big on presense actor Miguel Piñero plays the vilianous role of a lifetime - almost not a villian himself, but the representation, the face of a crooked system that will forever beat down the vice cops Crocket and Tubbs. Sonny and Rico are fighting a losing war... and Calderone is an embodiment of why. Bravo! - - - So that's my Top-5 Season One Villian list! 1. Calderone 2. Lombard 3. Guzman 4. Traynor 5. Maxwell

    Hotel Scarface-Newer Book

I hope that I am not rehashing a previous topic, but I just found this book on Amazon today, and I went ahead and ordered the hardcover. This book came out late last year, and the paperback is due out in November of this year. There is a television series in the works too. Anyway, I know most of us have an obvious love of Miami Vice and the movie Scarface, so this book looks like a winner. Here is the description I copied from Amazon: "The wild, true story of the Mutiny, the hotel and club that embodied the decadence of Miami’s cocaine cowboys heyday—and an inspiration for the blockbuster film, Scarface... In the seventies, coke hit Miami with the full force of a hurricane, and no place attracted dealers and dopers like Coconut Grove’s Mutiny at Sailboat Bay. Hollywood royalty, rock stars, and models flocked to the hotel’s club to order bottle after bottle of Dom and to snort lines alongside narcos, hit men, and gunrunners, all while marathon orgies burned upstairs in elaborate fantasy suites. Amid the boatloads of powder and cash reigned the new kings of Miami: three waves of Cuban immigrants vying to dominate the trafficking of one of the most lucrative commodities ever known to man. But as the kilos—and bodies—began to pile up, the Mutiny became target number one for law enforcement. Based on exclusive interviews and never-before-seen documents, Hotel Scarface is a portrait of a city high on excess and greed, an extraordinary work of investigative journalism offering an unprecedented view of the rise and fall of cocaine—and the Mutiny—in Miami." The book was written by Roben Farzad. I can't wait to read it.
  4. Others may have seen this before, but I just recently came across this photo for the first time and thought I would share it. I don't believe The Allman Brothers ever had music used in Miami Vice, but I read Gregg Allman and Jackson Browne were very good friends. This also reminded me of Sonny's line to Isabella while discussing his father playing southern rock in Mann's 2006 feature film:
  5. I started watching back on October 2nd of 2019. At the time I'd been listening to a lot of retrowave music and discovered NBC let you stream episodes free. After watching a few I borrowed a friends complete DVD set (the really nice one from 2007 that comes in the white faux alligator skin box) and have been obsessed ever since. I won't get into what my favorite episodes are (more than a few) or what one's I thought sucked (maybe three or four total). The truth is I've spent almost half a year getting to know deep characters that weren't and aren't like many others on TV. Miami Vice's heavy focus on telling good stories and on worldbuilding made watching the show feel more like I did whenever I read something like Tolkien's Lord of the Rings or Stephen Kings Gunslinger series. With Miami Vice despite my only having watched it since October the characters were so complex and stories on the whole so well thought out I feel like it's been years. I guess what I'm saying is this show helped shape a lot of my interests when I was young and now I can see why. It's affected me in a profound way. Sonny, Rico and all their partners at the OCB might not always have been the best cops as far as following the law or respecting people's rights goes but I think they were good cops at heart. All I know is I'm sure I'll continue watching episodes every now and again. Of course I've been obsessed with the music since I was a kid and always will be. I just know that one bit impact this has had on me is my ability to write drama has improved a lot. Usually I'm only able to write happy, cheerful funny stuff but for a story to be any good you have to have some bad stuff. too. Otherwise the good doesn't feel as gratifying when it happens. To me that's the story of Miami Vice. It's a glimpse of how bad humanity can get so we can hopefully better appreciate the good around us when we see it.

    Miami Vice Continuation?

Hello all! I haven't created a thread since back in the old .org days, so I'm sorry if this topic isn't in the right place. If not, I apologize. But I was searching online randomly and came across an interview Don Johnson did in 2014 with Rolling Stone. I'm sure many of you all on this site have read it. https://www.rollingstone.com/tv/tv-news/the-sky-started-raining-panties-don-johnson-on-30-years-of-miami-vice-65016/ Anyway, DJ says that for years, he hadn't even entertained the idea of reprising the role of Crockett, but at the time of the interview, he had started to consider it. He also mentioned that the ideas he had would be good to bridge the gap and also be ideal for streaming/binge watching. With all of that in mind, I was wondering....if the show were to be picked up by a streaming service and continued with the original actors, where would the show be able to go? What territory would be covered that maybe wouldn't have been possible during the original series' run? I personally think that the show ended on a perfect note. So I wonder what storylines and character arcs could be implemented to continue the legacy without possibly tarnishing it. Regardless, I thought the prospect of DJ being interested in reprising the role (albeit being almost five years ago since the interview) was interesting, to say the least.

    Miami Vice Filming Locations

Hello everyone! I just discovered this site last night and I wanted to thank you for accepting me into the group. I was somewhere around 15 to 19 years old when Miami Vice was being televised and I was hooked from the start. All these years later I still watch re-runs. As a hobby I travel the country and try to find filming locations of some of my favorite movies and TV shows, then post them on an Instagram page. I thought I would share one of my Miami Vice photos on here. This was a former gas station seen in episode 22 of season 1, titled 'Evan'
