Lester Kosko's Biography

Lester Kosko's grandparents immigrated into the United States in the late 1880’s. They settled down in Pennsylvania. The name "Kosko" suggests that Lester's ancestors hailed from the Ukraine, because it consists of the Ukrainian word "kosyj" (=nickname for a squint-eyed person) and the suffix of Ukrainian surnames "-ko" (*). Because his family was quite conservative they only spoke Ukrainian at home. That's why Lester speaks with a slight Slovenian accent.

As of 1984 Lester had already been working for Vice as an electronics specialist for several years. He's called whenever special circumstances complicate a routine investigation. His speciality is to solve problems with his own hands and a soldering iron [1]. His unorthodox electronic results are legendary. That's why Larry Zito introduces Lester as "resident wizard" to his new colleague Rico Tubbs [2].

But Lester isn't only up-to-date concerning his electronic inventions. He also painstakingly prepares his assignments, because he knows that success or failure of an operation may depend on his knowledge [3]. Another field of his work is acoustics: microphones, bugs and tapes.

Lester Kosko never makes a fuss about his knowledge, usually he takes a back seat. But he responds in a huff if his effort and energy isn't appreciated.

Lester Koskos Biographie

Lester Koskos Großeltern wanderten in den späten 1880er Jahren in die Vereinigten Staaten ein und ließen sich in Pennsylvania nieder. Der Name "Kosko" läßt darauf schließen, dass Lesters Vorfahren aus der Ukraine stammen, denn "Kosko" ist eine Zusammensetzung aus dem ukrainischen Wort "kosyj" (=schielend/zwinkernd/mit Silberblick) und dem Suffix ukrainischer Nachnamen "-ko" (*). Da seine Familie eher konservativ eingestellt war, wurde bei den Koskos privat nur Ukrainisch gesprochen. Daher stammt Lesters leichter slawischer Akzent.

Im Jahr 1984 ist Lester Kosko schon seit einigen Jahren bei Vice beschäftigt. Er arbeitet als Elektronikexperte und wird immer dann gerufen, wenn besondere Umstände eine Routineüberwachung erschweren. Seine Spezialität ist es, bei den Problemlösungen selbst Hand und Lötkolben anzulegen [1]. Seine unkonventionellen, elektronischen Resultate sind im Vice Squad bereits legendär, so stellt Larry Zito seinem neuen Kollegen Rico Tubbs den Elektronikspezialisten als "resident wizard" (= "hiesigen Hexenmeister") vor [2].

Lester Kosko ist aber nicht nur in Sachen elektronischer Basteleien auf dem neusten Stand. Auch seine Einsätze bereitet er akribisch vor, denn er weiß, dass von seinem Wissen der Erfolg oder - der Mißerfolg - einer Aktion abhängen kann [3]. Ein weiteres Betätigungsfeld seiner technischen Arbeit ist die Akustik: Mikrofone, Wanzen und Tonbänder.
