Initial reaction to MV

I think one main reason why MV was so well received was to the general public the whole drug underworld of Miami was new, exotic & forbidden.  Alot of american innonence was delightfully lost watching MV.  There were sooo many stars begging to do a guest shot on MV Mann refused more than he had roles for.

Yes indeed the drug underworld has a lot to do with the success. There have always been a lot of cop shows out there, but they're practically all about homicide. So, after the success Scarface had just a year before in 1983, the idea of having a cop show about the drug underworld wasn't a bad idea at all. It's basically Scarface in TV show format, and Scarface is one of the greatest  movies ever, so of course people would enjoy Miami Vice.

Tartikoff wanted a show of MTV cops and his idea made a show the likes of which the world had never seen before or since.  It was simply numerous factors converging at the right time in history when once combined couldn't be beaten.  MTV was huge & the music it featured perfectly fit MV's storylines.  I beleived had Mann & Hammer stayed on AND had the show stayed simple & raw as in seasons 1 & 2 it as Thomas said could have lasted longer.  The Simpsons is experiencing a similair fate.

The pilot was shot like a feature film, that easily could've played in a Theatre.

Another factor, unlike other cop shows at that time MV featured the hottest artists and songs.

Mrs Freed your absolutely right.  There were songs actually recorded just for individual episodes of MV.

Andy Taylor did When The Rain Comes Down just for MV & it got to #70 on the radio hot 100 chart.

Andy Taylor did When The Rain Falls just for MV.

Plus you had many of them guest starring on the show.

Miami Vice was lightning in a bottle, there was nothing like it on tv at the time.

At the time, before the time, after the time.  It got redundant after season 3.  Not even Phil Collins could touch Charlie Barnett (rip).  "I thought this was a police operation, not a sequel to Roots".
