Been watching a few John Wayne flicks lately. The Cowboys, Rio Bravo, The Sons of Katie Elder. Got a few more on the DVR. The guy is like a second god around my house. Not a huge western fan but there are some great ones. Cheers.

+1 on films of the Duke. He's always been one of my favorite actors, and have his autograph. Some of my favorites are: The Quiet Man, The Searchers, the Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Rio Bravo., and They Were Expendable.

In the past week I've watched the following films I'd never seen before:

Fight Club 1999 - Good movie but too long. Brad Pitt was great in the 90s but not so much nowadays.

Blue Velvet 1986 - WTF. Really well made but probably the weirdest/creepiest flick I've seen in some time. Mainlycause of Dennis Hopper.

Scarecrow 1973 - Great performances by Al Pacino and Gene Hackman. Didn't like the ending though.

Gone Girl 2014 - Really enjoyed it. Love Rosamund Pike.

The Offense 1971 - Great performance by Sean Connery but probably one of the most depressing cop movies I've seen.

Dressed To Kill 1980 - Slow start but a great twist.

The Night Of The Hunter 1955 - Robert Mitchum is totally sinister. Overall really good but gets a little hokey during the third act.

Gonna watch the following films soon

.The Third Man, The Sting, To Catch A Thief, Saturday Night Fever, The Pink Panther, Natural Born Killers, Jerry McGuire, The Rock, Chisum, Cahill US Marshall, The Searchers, The Train Robbers, and El Dorado.

Had some of these on my DVR for over a year so finally gonna get rid of em. How have I never seen some of these?

Once upon a time in the West -- Awesome!! All the cast is great, Claudia Cardinale is drop dead gorgeous, Henry Fonda plays against type as the villain(who mows down a family including kids). Ennio Morricone's score is tremendous. Makes you miss the old west;( 10/10

Two Mules for Sister Sara -- Cool film that's kind of half hollywood/half spaghetti western in style. Clint and Shirely Mcclaine have good chemistry and there's some cool action scenes. The climatic battle at the fort is really fun and violent. (Clint chops a guys arm off with a machete Spartacus-style.) 8/10

Enter the Dragon  -- Super!! What's better than Bruce Lee, John Saxon and a black dude kicking ass in a martial arts tournament? Too good. Was surprised how modern it still looked. Felt like a Tarantino flick at times. 9/10

The Thing -- John Carpenter's masterpiece and Kurt Russell's the man. 10/10

I watched Bruce Lee's movies, when I was a kid. That's long time ago now, but Way of the Dragon is a great film from 1972, I didn't forget. Especially remember that fight scene between Bruce and Chuck Norris, very intense and brutal. CN looks like a completely different person without the beard. https://youtu.be/TYHZEu7Y7DU

Tarantino has mentioned several times he took inspiration from HK Cinema :)

Oh god where to start, I recently watched Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. and I think I wanna grow my hair out like Snake :)  I'm gonna complete the Russell Trilogy by watching Big Trouble In Little China.. The Thing I watched that once don't know if I would again? (Those poor dogs :(  )

Years ago I finally decided to become a movie collector I have over 400 DVDs/Blu Rays after years of collecting.

As DVDs phase out I seem to be buying the same movies on Blu Ray that I had before

Example: I've owned Heat on DVD for years, but as soon as they came out with the new remastered Blu Ray edition this year, that was a day one buy for me.

I'm going to the cinema on a weekly basis with my best friend, most recent thing I saw in cinemas was Cars 3  this year has been particularly fantastic for movies..  such as Fast & Furious 8, Guardians of The Galaxy 2, Spiderman Homecoming, Wonder Woman, Logan, etc

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 what a disappointment :(

So many more great movies to come as well this year such as Thor Ragnarok, Justice League etc..

As for a movie I've seen recently...I got and watched the original 1962 Cape Fear, with Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Polly Bergen. It was realistically scary with an obsessed convict who gets out and plans his revenge, and the lengths a father will go to protect his family. As one tag line says...a superb masterpiece of revenge, confrontation, and murder! I love thrillers and film noirs...and this movie was an awesome example of both!

Ive also recently seen Basic Instinct again, for the 1st time in years. I'll be honest and say (in my opinion) this movie sucks. Maybe I'm getting old :p, but this was not a thriller or a psychological drama...but a gross "soft" porn between Michael Douglas & Sharon Stone :wuerg:, as well as let's see how many F-words we can have everyone say in one conversation.

Awesome movies and yes, definitely watch The Thing again too.

haha, can't argue against anything you said but whenever Basic Instinct's on Tv, I'm always blown away by how unnecessarily good it looks considering what it is. It looks like it was made by the guy who did "Chinatown" or something. "9 and a half weeks" with Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke is another one that is particularly cool looking too. They knew how to do "erotic" movies back in the day, now we got stuff like 50 Shades of Grey.:wuerg:

I like Carpenter but even his most ardent fans wouldn't call him a cinematic God, I think he's made enough cool/interesting films that he's deserving of his reputation though.

With "Escape from New York", it's not so much the actual film but the idea of it if that makes sense. The enigmatic protagonist that's in the similar vein to Clint Eastwood in the Dollars Trilogy, the minimalist soundtrack, the zany characters. etc It has an air of coolness combined with the nihilistic tone makes it a really fun movie despite it's many flaws. "Escape from L.A" is kind of crappy but It has it's moments like the awesome basketball scene and the last 5 minutes is fantastic.

The Thing is Carpenter's masterpiece. I have no idea how that bombed in theatres(Thanks Spielberg and E.T). And there's not THAT much gore in the film. Kurt Russell is amazing. The scene where Russell tests the blood with the flamethrower is ingenious. All the creature effects still hold up.

I didn't get "Big Trouble in Little China" either but would try watching it again. They Live was fun. Starman. etc I haven't seen much of his stuff released after They Live (heard bad things) . Carpenter is a cool dude for at least trying to make fun original movies and deserves props, even if the execution isn't quite there sometimes.

Totally agree, it wasn't as good as Escape from New York..  L.A. felt like a parody, but as you say it has awesome moments such as giving Snake a theme and the last 5 minutes

Absolutely love Cape Fear. Both the original and remake. Lol I do have a soft spot for Basic Instinct.:)

I'm afraid I can't share people's enthusiasm for Carpenter's Escape and Big Trouble In Little China. I was disappointed by Escape as it looked good and had a great cast but I found it to be overrated and forgettable. The story was decent but the characters were uninteresting and lacked depth and the dialogue isn't too good and there isn't even that much action so I don't think there's much to that movie at all and I don't care for it. I don't know why it's so highly regarded.
Big Trouble In Little China I thought was total garbage. I hated it. It's nonsensical plotless crap and you need a lobotomy to enjoy it. It's just a bunch of random shit that happens for no reason whatsoever. There's no good dialogue and character development, what's that? Kurt Russell gives his worst performance and I just think it's a terrible film.

I don't get this worship of John Carpenter. He has an inflated reputation if you ask me. His fans act like he's Jesus Christ and I don't know why. I think he only made two truly great films, Assault On Precinct 13 and They Live. Both are classics but I don't think the rest of his films are too good. I think Christine is good but Halloween has too many flaws, plot holes and logic issues for it to be great, The Fog is crap and boring and Prince of Darkness is total shit. I think The Thing is overrated too. The characters have no depth and it's an exercise in gorey effects over substance. It's somehow gained a huge following but mostly among gorehounds I think. What is accurate is he hasn't made a good film since They Live. I just don't buy into this veneration of Carpenter. I know some won't like what I've written but it's my opinion. I judge movies based on story, characters and dialogue and the fact is most of Carpenter's films don't cut it in those departments.

Moving on, I think the 1962 Cape Fear is a great film and a classic and it beats the Scorsese version any day.

I do not think of Carpenter as Jesus or a cinematic god...but I will disagree about some of his movies you don't like. :p

Halloween is superb...its simplicity and realism (except for the very end where Michael Myers isn't dead) of a crazed nut stalking people he becomes obsessed with, while these small town residents aren't used to danger and are not paying attention is actually terrifying--because sadly that kind of stuff happens! I don't need blood-n-guts or special effects to "scare" me. ;)

Christine is not scary...just cool with the cars and music. For the time it was made, and the budget they had at that time, it was pretty good!

The Fog was kind of bizarre...but it still had its creepy moments. It could have been better, but again for late 70s/early 80s & low budget, these suspense/horror films were actually pretty cool!

Big Trouble in Little China was awesome!! It wasn't supposed to be taken seriously, lol! This wasn't Silence of the Lambs, here. :p It was just a wild, action-comedy with bizarre but cool special effects. It was a "fun" entertaining flick that was non-stop fighting bad guys, but also had you laughing your head off! :)

I don't love every single one of his movies...but Carpenter has done some pretty awesome ones, especially for their time. :hippie:

@Tommy Vercetti @Vincent Hanna it annoys me when people worship Tarantino, I mean yeah the guy has made some damn good movies,  Pulp Fiction is one of my top movies of all time, but Tarantino has mostly ripped off quite a few HK Cinema classics, I know he's mentioned inspiration, but if you've ever seen the movie City on Fire, it's like watching Reservoir Dogs but in China, the true original one, I'd like it if he casted Chow Yun Fat in a movie especially as he's mentioned him as an inspiration and role model... I enjoyed Hateful Eight but the 2nd chapter DRAGGED like crazy to the point I nearly fell asleep... Death Proof I don't even need to mention it, that's his worst movie by far.

I am a huge Halloween fan.  I thought the points you made were spot on accurate.  I grew up in a small town of 10,000 where we never locked our car or house doors. I remember seeing it when in high school the year it hit the theater and it scared the crap out of me.  It was the talk of the school as us teenagers could relate to the characters in the film. Plus I had an instant crush on Jamie Lee Curtis. I have this film on my must see list every October.

Awesome!! I too grew up in small, tiny towns where a lot didn't lock their doors and many left their keys in their cars. However, I never did that myself. But, I have a scary, personal reason that Halloween ended up being my favorite scary movie...something that happened to me the very first time I saw it...which was in high school. This was years after it had come out, so the first time I saw it was on a VHS rental. ;) But, what happened to me while I tried to watch it scared the crap out of me and I'll never forget it!! I will have to post that story at some point (possibly here as it's a thread about movies we've seen)...but it'd be pretty long. But, because of what happened I watch this movie every October too, while drinking Sam Adams October Fest, LOL! :)

Conan The Barbarian

"Let me tell you the days of High Adventure!"

I finally saw this for the first time and loved the hell of it. Now THIS is a movie!! Remember when filmmakers made epics movies that also had some personal statement? The good old days when you couldn't swing a sword around without hitting some high adventure, now we have to settle for medium CGI-filled adventures.

Loved everything about it. Arnold is great as Conan. James Earl Jones, Max von Sydow with his awesome monologue. "There comes a time thief when Jewels cease to sparkle, Gold loses it's luster, When a throne room becomes a prison and all that's left is a father's love for his child" The action scenes are sparse but intense.

The whole flick is jam packed with quotable lines. "What is best in life?" "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you and hear the lamentation of their women". Conan's Prayer to Crom "and If you do not listen...then to hell with you."

The only flaw that I could possibly fathom is that any generic movie you watch afterwards will pale in comparison to this masterpeice. Now I just need to see it on the big screen;(

Brawl in Cell Block 99 - Weird movie, gets unexpectedly gore-y after half way into it. But Don Johnson was so great as the prison boss, whatdoyacallit.

My towns theater has been having a retro movie night on some Tuesdays this month. Last night I got to see the psychologically shocking  Silence of the Lambs on the big screen for the first time since it was released back in ‘91! It was still just as amazing and captivating 26 years later!

Next week is the ultimate...for me that is. For the first time in decades, and digitally remastered, the original 1978 Halloween is being shown—on Halloween!! :dance2: I think this is to help promote the new 40th anniversary Halloween film planned for next year...with Jamie Lee returning to her role as Laurie Strode! I think all the sequels after part 2, as well as Zombies horrible remakes—thank goodness, will be ignored. We’ll see! :funky:

The Silence of the Lambs is great but I prefer Manhunter myself.

Halloween is a classic. Part 2, 4, and H20 are good too. The rest are to be ignored. Especially the Zombie films. Three hours I can never get back. The only time I ever threw away a DVD lol. Really excited for the next film. I hear it actually ignores the second film too. That would be a shame but Jamie Lee Curtis returning for the 40th anniversary is a good enough.

Damn I feel like I haven't posted for a while.:). On a side note I'm camping with a couple friends on Halloween. Three drunk dumbasses in the words in the middle of nowhere on Halloween night. What could go wrong?:p

Lol...have fun but be careful. If you’re camping in the woods it’ll probably be Jason after you instead of Michael! :p

As for your thoughts on the Halloween movies, yours are pretty much identical to mine...I actually feel like I’m talking to myself when reading them! :dance2:

Zombie’s movies were despicable garbage...I saw the 1st one, and it was so bad if I had it to do over Id of walked out part way through & demanded a refund!  I didn’t waste my time or money with his 2nd one.

Yeah, I think the upcoming 40th anniversary movie will ignore all the other movies...even 2. It’ll be interesting to see how they have Laurie still in Haddonfield, babysitting again, but 40 years later. But it’ll be awesome to have Jamie Lee Curtis return to her iconic role!
