Two videos of downtown Miami from FB.  Sorry the images are a little distorted, lengthened for some reason, but you should still be able to recognize the Courthouse, what's left of the Miami Herald Building, Artie's building, the MacArthur causeway, the B of A Building etc. The number of high rise cranes are amazing.  Seriously looks like the biggest building boom Miami has ever seen.

My friend Frank and I had a good time, visited some familiar sites and some new places.

The Evan Garage is still there, has been Oster Tire for some time, kind of shabby up close.  Gas pumps are long gone.

The Charlotte Jane Cemetery in the Grove seen in Tale of the Goat and in Michael Jackson's Thriller video. Cemetery is resting place for some of Miami's earliest black residents who built the Grove.  Bahamian style graves.

Kind of a misty day.  Looking across the Bay from the Rusty Pellican Restaurant, best view in town.  Used to be a slightly upscale seafood place but is now a huge, overpriced, gourmet fancy restaurant with items like "Patagonian Tooth Fish." You can't make this stuff up.

HPIM0232

This is the Seminole Casino at Krome and 8th St.  Just poker and electronic slot machines.  Won $30.

HPIM0233

Glad to see the Biltmore is doing great, booked up for the big 4th of July fireworks behind the hotel.  Big show and crowd.

074

Strange creatures at the Biltmore.

HPIM0241

One of several chicken statues in Little Havana.  This one is patriotic.

HPIM0242

The wagon wheel restaurant from Heart of Darkness.  A Carreta is an old fashioned wagon.  I made the mistake of asking for decaf and got a cup of milk and a small container of coffee to mix together??

Depression Moderne And Mediterranean Revival architectural styles. Old Police And Fire Station €

The old Coral Gables fire and police station built by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) in "Depression Moderne."  Now a neat museum.

1910 RVR INN01 386x564

Where we stayed, the Miami River Inn, built around 1910 and fully restored in the heart of downtown.  Very nice, well maintained, safe, and relatively inexpensive.  It was in the movie Marley and Me. Lots of European travelers there.

Club Deuce postcard

Back of a postcard showing a Playboy Magazine rating Club Deuce as one of America's greatest bars.

HPIM0229

Club Deuce, Miami Beach's oldest bar with Vice's neon they allowed the bar to keep.  Michael Talbott was the bartender at the rap party.

HPIM0245

Me with Mac, the owner, who is 99 yrs old, really.  That's him on the right.  He looks and acts great.  All he would tell me about DJ at the rap party was: "He stayed by himself."  Not sure how to take that. Being discreet?  Didn't see much of DJ?

Club Deuce business cards, match books & coaster

Some of the stuff Mac gave me, business cards, matchbooks, stickers, and coasters.

040

Tobacco Road, Miami's oldest bar, in Bad Timing.  Surrounded by highrises, it will be torn down soon.  They are trying to relocate but it's the end of an era.

HPIM0209

Frank inside Tobacco Road, now I know why they never filmed inside at the bar.  Pretty small.

054

Matheson Hammock with Miami skyline in background.  Used often in Burn Notice.

HPIM0217

Matheson Hammock, a big round tidal swimming area.

063

Frank and I with our dates at Key Biscayne.

27JoseMarti

Jose Marti Park from No Exit etc. Our Inn was right across the street.  Place looks run down when you get close.

miami033

Warsaw Ballroom etc now Jerry's (Sex World from LMD etc.)  Jerry has sold out and it will be a TexMex restaurant in August, "Senor Frog."  Fortunately they are not allowed to change the exterior.

HPIM0224

Shot of No Name Harbor on Key Biscayne where a scene from Tale of the Goat was filmed.

Gablesfiredept zps022719a5

Closer look at the faces on the front of the Coral Gables Museum.  Lots of photos and memorabilia from the start of the "City Beautiful."

149

Fireworks seen from the Biltmore Hotel's pool.  Largest hotel pool in the world.

Traffic was not as bad as the last time I was there.  Only one mishap when a woman backed into me at a stop sign, think she put it in reverse instead of drive but no damage to my old pickup.  Huge megalopolis with more high rises going up everywhere.  Downtown Miami's 99% Hispanic residential area is like a foreign country, crowded, different but generally clean and safe with friendly people. We didn't visit Little Dominica and other minority locations.  Some depressed areas like every other US city.  Beautiful areas, beaches, unique, glitz and super high end places, a real study in contrasts.  All young people speak English. Totally different from what I remember growing up but as Thomas Wolf said, "You can't go home again."
