What Vice's OCB really did

Miami and fast boats go together.  Here is one of only two PT boats built by Miami Shipbuilding Corporation in 1941. They were then contracted to build 63' AirSea Rescue Boats (ASR) for the duration of the war.  PT boats were used mainly in the Pacific to torpedo Japanese shipping in WWII. The most famous PT skipper was John F. Kennedy in PT 109.  It was built by another company.  Click for larger images.

Interesting facts and pics there. I'd always wondered what was really going on in the OCB Building.

These PT boats seem a bit different from ones I've seen in the John Wayne movie They Were Expendable or in the Cliff Robertson vehicle PT 109. They must have been built by another company as you indicated.

Btw, on that subject,  the movie They Were Expendable has a memorable closing shot of the Lighthouse at Bll Baggs State Park at the very end of the movie, and so you can get a glimpse of the lighthouse and surrounds as it looked in 1945.

Interesting Sonny, I'll have to check that out the next time it's on TV.  Was that closing shot supposed to be in the Pacific?

The movie is supposedly set in the Philippines, during the stage where it was being overrun by the Japanese in Bataan and Corregidor.

From Wikipedia:

"The film received extensive support from the Navy Department and it was shot on location on Key Biscayne, Florida,[4] and the Florida Keys, since this region most closely approximated the South West Pacific Theater. Actual U.S. Navy 80-foot Elco PT Boats were used throughout the filming, albeit remarked with false hull numbers that would have been in use in late 1941 and early 1942. Additional U.S. naval aircraft from nearby naval air stations in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Key West were temporarily remarked and were used to simulate Japanese aircraft in the film."

You have to watch closely at the very end for the Lighthouse shot, as it comes pretty quickly when the last plane is flying out.
