Episode 2 - Heart of Darkness

There doesn't appear to be A thread for this one, so here it is!

Can anybody help with which end of Dodge Island was used to film the Artie/Kovacs arc where Artie finally reveals his intentions and helps Sonny and Rico escape death in a shootout?

Bilders-  Strange that there is no thread for Heart of Darkness,  I could upload what we used to have from .org but with C Glide's site most of that old stuff is obsolete.  He does not go into detail about that scene on Dodge so I'll scan the episode and see if I can notice something that will tell us where it was filmed and get back to you.  That sea port has grown huge since Vice, they even have an underwater tunnel leading to it now so chances of spotting the filming spot are not great.

I think Artie/Kovacs arc was filmed in the same place as Crockett and Tubbs meet with F.B.I. agent. North side, east end of Port Of Miami.

That's a real possibility because they liked to use the same filming spot for multiple scenes.  The only thing I would say is that it looks like the north side of Dodge Island, where on the north side exactly I don't know.  In the daytime scene with the FBI informant you see buildings in the background.  In the nighttime final shootout scene with Artie you see the lights of the MacArthur Causeway but not the lights of the buildings. Maybe that's why C Glide didn't go into detail about the scene location on his website. If I missed something let me know.

Nice episode and we see the Daytona for the first time on Brickell half way through the episode with the camera on SE15th Road intersection looking south ( this shot was not used in "Hit List" )

The filming spot is now in middle of a parking lot at Booker T. Washington Senior High.  High school construction began in 96 and it took over the area demolishing buildings in the process.

By the way does any Burn Notice fan know what episode the clips in my photo are from?

Has this road been built over with a carpark? I can't figure it out based on what C Glide's location recap says.

Bilders is asking about where Artie drops off C&T near the beginning of the ep.   I studied this scene carefully and it looks to me like C Glide's placement of the Carl Ritz building is off by about half a block.  He has NW 6th Ave going through the middle of the current football field, but it's really at the edge of it.  I drew a map:

Carl_Ritz.png

red = Carl Ritz Import & Export Corporation / porn studio

yellow = NW 6th Avenue

blue = NW 13th Street

black = Crockett's Ferrari

So, C&T were parked just at the eastern edge of the current basketball courts.

Take a look at this area at historicaerials.com .  The scene was filmed in 1984.  Look at the 1980 aerial and then the 1986 aerial and you can see that only 2 years after this scene was filmed many of the background buildings were already gone.

The only building in this scene that remains today is the house you catch a glimpse of when they first drive up, at the bottom right corner of my picture. It hasn't been demolished because it has some historical significance:

miamijimf - Thanks for getting back to me. I proceeded to do some scouting and your confirmation helped me look at it from the right perspective.

airtommy - Thanks for your comprehensive follow up! I checked this post after scouting and everything you said lines up perfectly with my understanding of it all.

I was just coming up to mention that within a 2 year period all the buildings/houses across the road would have been removed. I noticed this when looking at the 1986 Historic Aerial shot.

Artie calls C&T from a payphone:

Artie is calling from a payphone on Biscayne Blvd. 1 block away from the studio, outside the Storer Communications building at 12000 Biscayne Blvd.

http://www.miamivicelocations.org/page14.html

The building behind Artie does look exactly like the Storer Communications building, but there is another big white building reflected in its windows. There are no other big buildings nearby in that area, so that can't be it.

I think the white building is one of the "Four Ambassadors" near Brickell.  Notice how the corners bulge out.  That's a fairly unique feature.

We can see ground level in the final few frames:

My best guess is that Artie is on 8th St and the building behind him is Suntrust at 777 Brickell (NE corner of 8th & Brickell), but I can't say for sure.  Complicating matters, the Suntrust building has been remodeled and the windows are quite different than they looked in the 1980s.

Also, if you look at the screen cap of Artie with the phone on C Glide's page that you linked, there's an overlap of the building walls going one segment past each window. This works against the theory of it being the Storer Communications building.

Yes but now in lies the problem of finding this mystery building!

I had this location marked on my map to stand where Artie is and tell whoever was with me to bring the money!

I'm going to need the help of some of Miami's finest experts to look in the right places. I'll study the scene again over the next few days and try to draw on my knowledge of Vice and their chosen shooting locations.

This is exciting as there's a lot of compatibility in a match here! I'll take a look and let you know what I think.

Would be good to see what our locations page guru C Glide thinks about this. After all we are contesting his findings :)

ADDITIONAL: Also, I am not sure if it helps, but you can go as far back as 2007 with Google Street View. If you click on the clock next to the address in the top left corner, you can use a slidebar to go back through different time periods.

Great work that looks like it could be it !!

I looked back as far as 2007 which makes the case even more compelling as you can get an angle off the windows which reflects a similar building as shown with Artie.

I think this is a really plausible lead. Plus the fact that it's always been a busy road, and in the scene you see a lot of cars travelling as speed behind Artie.
