miamijimf
Could this top of this radio tower be the red light? Apparently it was there in use until 1988 if I read the story right. I remember driving past it in the 60s. Even if the station was not transmitting from there the tower and red light could have remained. Here are excerpts from http://560.com/history.htm In 1941, WQAM received a permit to increase its daytime power to 5 kW, and this was completed in November of 1943 with the addition of a Continental 315-B transmitter. In 1947, a new 380 foot tall Lehigh self-supported vertical radiating antenna tower was installed on a pier extending out into Biscayne Bay at 1425 North East Bayshore Ct., just south of the Venetian Causeway . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. ............... In early 1988, the transmitter was moved to a new site near Miami and commenced AM stereo operation. If this is the tower than the restaurant backlot scene was most likely not filmed on Dodge Island, as Mac Arthur Causeway would be in between and the distance to the tower (on the photo with the guy on the hood of the car) does not match the distance between Dodge Island (let’s assume NW corner) and Venetian Causeway. Good point but there are examples of the camera making distant objects look closer than they really are. Remember in Tale of the Goat how close the Greenberg Traurig building looks as Sonny is following Rico in the Voodoo truck? Yes agreed in theory, but if this is the case here then the MacArthur Causeway (which is at half distance between Dodge island and Venetian Cswy with the radio tower) must be very close behind the guy on the hood and we would see it. That's right, of course, the MacArthur would be between Dodge Island and the Venetian but are you sure we don't see it? Those close in lights (above his back) we see after Renne gets the briefcase in the face might be the MacArthur. Can we increase the adaptive lightning on the screenshot in order to get the silhouette or at least the width of the building with the light on it? That feature of my photo editor has stopped working, so someone else has to do it. My original idea about the wide building was the old Miami Herald building. That would be right next to the radio tower Jim mentioned. One possible location is Biscayne Island, where Artie's condo is. I don't see good location candidates there, though. Ya this unknown has clues that can be explored. This makes it interesting. IMO Dodge Island is the leading candidate but we may be able to say with more certainty that it's the spot. I can't think it was this building, as it would have been on the wrong side of the island to have water and the skyline in the background. Also the doors and tree/bush positioning does not match. In addition, the port has changed so much over the years and many structures have been demolished, that even if the restaurant scene was filmed there, chances to find that spot nowadays will be rather minimal. For example Dodge Island has been merged with Lummus Island and Sam's Island in the eighties by landfill, and the the warehouse from the video capture above used to be on what was the northeast corner of the port at the time Edited October 22, 2019 by daytona365
miamijimf
Ya Dodge Island has changed dramatically, now they even have an underwater tunnel to the MacArthur. A 1986 view on https://www.historicaerials.com/viewer of the NW side is available but inconclusive, to me at least. Can't zoom in close enough to be sure. Dadrian
Per a certain cameraman: “That was on the John F. Kennedy Causeway aka NW 79 Street. It was in front of a mob connected restaurant called “Hy Uchitel’s Place for Steak”. Hope this helps!”

Then there is the High Voltage sign.

Ya it may well have been where the inside restaurant scene was shot. Too bad they tore the building down. For sure it wasn't the La Carreta, I've been there many times. They just used its facade for an establishing shot. Edited October 23, 2019 by miamijimf

I can't find any interior photos on Google or Pbase. Unfortunately this building seems to have been bulldozed just months ago. Google Street View no longer has pics, but Bing Streetside does, so we can see the back side of the building (kind of). https://binged.it/2n2KOre
Tom
To summarize the discussion we already had in a smaller group: the restaurant interior most probably was Hy Uchitel‘s (Hard to be sure as it was bulldozed), the parking lot scene was not filmed there as the lot layout and surrounding on historic aerials does not match and the „High voltage“ sign is unlikely for a restaurant. Also the lights and background behind the car do not match in case of JFK Causeway as mainland would be too far away. Highest chance for the parking lot is still Dodge Island but also hard to prove given the changes there. Most decisive clue is the background with the lighted tower which brings us back to adaptive lighting aka Square1!
airtommy
Considering the possibility that the Blue Dolphin setup shot was taken at Tin Lizzie at Biscayne & 125th St: It looks like we see a mid-rise condo in the distance and a parking garage in front of it. This condo and its parking garage up at 135th St seem like a very good match. But the problem is that when you look north from 125th St, there is another building (12955 Biscayne) blocking your view of the parking garage. According to Historic Aerials, that building was there in 1984. Here is my shot from 125th looking north (using zoom): Edited January 9, 2020 by airtommy

airtommy
Another problem is the cars parked on the street. I don't think that's ever happened on Biscayne Blvd. It could have been a fake sign planted here on 123rd St: https://goo.gl/maps/9kQAp92eEqZ4xsP46 Edited January 9, 2020 by airtommy
