My trip to Miami

Hi everyone,

just signed up here. I was a member of m-v.org forum some 10 years ago but can't remember my username anymore. Alltough I see some familiar posters here now.

Anyway, I'm finally going to travel to Miami for the first time and now I got few months time to draw a map for myself of all places I need to visit. So, please help out and share your top 5 (or more) must see Miami Vice locations. There's some places already on my mind like, Evan gas station and Carlyle Hotel. I've read somewhere that Crockett's Testarossa is somewhere on display. Is it perhaps in Miami?

Have to watch at least first two seasons before I go! Yeah..

The Ferrari is or was up in Lauderdale at a place called the Swap Shop.

I've been studying the locations for more than a dozen years and there are literally thousands of them, so I don't even know any more which are my favorites.

If you are heading out to the Evan gas station, you should stop off at La Libertad where MV filmed several times (Killshot:  Crockett orders "un cafecito por favor").

The main thing you should see in Miami is South Beach.  Stroll up Ocean Drive from about 5th to 15th.  You'll see beautiful Lummus Park and the wide beach, the many historic Art Deco hotels, and many MV filming locations.  Lincoln Road Mall and Espanola Way are must-see areas.  Washington Ave was used for a ton of driving and walking scenes, and don't forget the Post Office (El Viejo).

You can find maps here with locations marked on them:  http://miamiviceonline.com/index.php/page/articles.html/_/locati/

I recently went on a pilgrimage to Miami and the first stop off the plane was La Libertad.  Be cautioned:  It's not in the greatest 'hood, but it's well worth ordering a cafecito at the well-preserved exact same spot as Crockett.  The interior is painted a new color, but you can see some of the blue paint from the time the scene was shot here and there.  It's pretty cool and the coffee is insane!  From there, it's a short drive -- basically a straight line -- to the Courthouse steps used in Lombard, No Exit...the pilot of course.

You might want to hit the Jai Alai center on the way to the airport.  It's pretty much right next to the airport and it is awesome.  It's pretty much a time machine.  Not much has changed in the interior since Kill Shot.

Def go to the link provided above.  Charlie Glide's site.  Pick your episodes and make a list. It will save you a lot of aggro later.

All good advice, especially checking C Glide's website http://www.miamivicelocations.org/  I would put the sites in your favorite episode(s) high on your list because traffic is a bear almost all the time.  On my last trip I gave up trying to drive from Miami to Miami Beach and had to turn around at Star Island.  Be cautious because many sites no longer exist.  If there is any question in your mind you could post the sites you want to see and we will tell you if they are still there.  Have fun.

Thanks for all the replies. Many good points there. I'm going with my woman and my little boy so I have to take care of them first and not to drag them every alley. Alltough my woman is all in and also happy that I'm finally getting to Miami. It's strange that, I've never been in Miami and never even been in US, I feel like I somehow, somewhat know the city. That's of course result of loving MV since I was kid.

Our hotel is in South Beach so that's good starting point. CharlieGlides's wepsite is just phenomenal. I'm gonna soon start watching 1st season and that site is gonna be REALLY helpful. I'm most likely going to update this thread with some questions later on and share some pictures with you later this year. I actually just bought new iphone to get decent pictures out there.

I couldn't find email address of that Swap Shop, so is there someone living nearby and would be willing to check if MV Testarossa is still there (and 'till to septemper)? There's picture of it in their wepsite but it doesn't tell much..

The funny thing is that for my next trip to Miami visiting the alleys in South Beach is one of my top priorities.    :)   The alleys are a location I only recently started studying, since Google Street View was not available for them before.

Maybe I'll do some alley chasing too when I get there, pal  :D

I've done some location studying and damn, now I'm more than excited. Our hotel is in 20th Street and it would be interesting to know how much was filmed that actual street..

That general area has tons of locations.

Collins Ave from 19th to 22nd is the area where Wolfie's, the Gayety Burlesque, Concord Electronics, Gino's Garden, Greystone Hotel, etc.  were located.  They were seen in the background of many night-time driving and walking scenes.   Unfortunately, they are all gone except for the Greystone and the block looks different now.

Where 20th ends at Washington Ave is the park & building used for several scenes in Everybody's In Showbiz, including the final shootout.

Up at 24th is the footbridge which Crockett jumps off into a boat in One Way Ticket.  Stallone walks across this bridge early in "The Specialist".  It's also seen in Bad Boys, I think.  Cross the bridge and go up two blocks on Flamingo and you'll see the judge's house  (exterior scene only) in Contempt of Court.

Few more days and I'll be in Miami. I've watched most episodes of first two seasons and checked out all locations from CGs site. I've learned that one of my favorite scenes; that crazy car chase in "Bought and Paid for" with Crockett and Lamborghini guy went on to 20th street at one point and right next to where our hotel is located. I'm planning to visit Crockett's "home" at Bayside Marina. I really don't know what to expect there. Is there still boats? Is there some landmark where I know that, It was right about here?

Bayside and the Miami Marina are alive and well and booming.  The docks have changed since Vice time but the design is basically the same and it's possible to get close to the spot where Crockett's sailboat was moored.  For an aerial photo showing where Crockett's boat was located go to one of the pages on C Glide's great site at http://www.burnnoticelocations.org/page9.html and cursor down.

Don't forget to visit the spot where C&T say goodbye at the end of Freefall:  the southeast corner of Bayside or the northeast corner of Bayfront Park.  Of course, the skyline behind them has changed a bit.

Tons of great locations and I will go along with whatever others want to see. I would suggest considering a couple of group photos of all on the tour. For this I recommend Watson Island near Chalk's with Miami as the background. If I was living close by I would bring the Bernay's Café sign with a generator and set it back up on the pole for a great group photo, but a daytime photo will be great also. Also a group photo at the Evan garage would be cool.

No need for new topic but I just want to share that I was in Miami and been recovering from that experience for a few days now..

We had really excellent time there. South Beach is really great place to be at. Days just went by really fast.. We met many nice people, did some shopping and well... there's so much to do in Miami, I just wish we had more time. 1 month would have been great. And now let's get the most interesting part... Miami Vice shooting locations! I saw many. I had 1300 photos & videos in my phone when I arrived home. I upload today some of my photos to the gallery section. I was little busy when doing that so I'm going to update those photo descriptions (if one can do that). But I think many of you reconize those locations anyway. My personal highlight was going to the Bayside. It really got me sentimental. I just could feel the vibe there. Crockett's boats.. and Crockett and Tubbs driving away for the very last time.

I basically had nothing with me when we went there and I had lot's of fun while searching linen pants and henley t-shirts. And boy was I lucky.. there was a lot's of sale going on prior the labor day and I made some terrific bargains there. Now I just have to wait like 8 months or so for temperatures rising in Finland !

Great visit and great memories!

I want to say special thanks to miamivicelocations website. I'm not really sure which one of you Charlie Glides run that site but let me tell you.. It is just phenomenal that you can go to Miami in 2015 and have information like that in your pocket. Without that site my visit to Miami wouldn't have been the same, Thank You!
