The Video Game Thread

Since we're pretty much always discussing video games here, I thought I'd make a thread about it. Where we can discuss games of the past, and games we're looking forward to, especially now that it's E3 week.

I'll start with Mafia III. I'm a huge fan of he first two, I was jumping with joy when they first announced the third. Now they released some new gameplay, and it looks bloody amazing! I cannot wait for this...

The last video game I played was around 3-4 years ago and that was Epic Mickey 2. I haven't played since they stopped creating platform games, like that. But now, I'm really looking forward to this:

This is the spiritual successor to Banjo Kazooie.

I like games created from the Nintendo 64 era. :)

Cant wait for Mafia 3. Still hoping for a new Red Dead game, i'd even settle for a remastered version as long as it comes to PC.

the one thing I find curious about that was that with mafia 2, I wonder if the old guy you meet in prison was supposed to be salieri, as the VA of him passed during development, and it just so happened to be the print works guy from Vice City.

so is he technically supposed to be rebelling against salieri?

I don't think so, Salieri got arrested in 1938, and Vito was in prison from 1945 - 1951.  Salieri was already old, so he would be older, around 80 or 90, so likely dead by the time Vito was in prison. Plus Lost Heaven is based on the other side of the country so he would've been in a prison local to Lost Heaven.

I think it was already supposed to be Leo Galante, because he's turns out to be Vito's mentor, and the reason Vito get's made.

Mafia 3 is kind of disappointing though, they removed some great small features from the game. Can't change clothes, the fuel feature's gone, among other things. The game is looking kind of generic now.

I still wonder though, as that's only 7 years since then at the start of 1945, but then you have that mission in mafia 2 really set in the middle 1950's, like maybe their could have been some sort of connection or a cameo of him giving the order, or that leo might have been one of his underbosses that they didnt get enough on to put him in forever with. and he got the order as a final request of his will or something.

and I'll tell you this much, I really hope Tommy didnt rat out Luca, or Pete and I'd still like to know what happened to them, as god damn Luca had some of the best cars in the game, and pete seemed like a really good guy.

and I'd really like to see the Return of Luca in the new game somehow, like in some secret mission to retake the Buggati Type 37 for your own personal collection lol

and actually I'll tell you this much, the thing I always missed in open world games post GTA 3, VC and Mafia was that their was no home base that really grew on you like Saleri's bar did and I dont know if they'll go back to that for mafia 3 here really, as Saleri's bar has to be one of my favorite places in videogames to date really.

same thing with that Pizzeria really, sans the bullets of course lol as true story after playing through the PS2 version of that mission, it really put me in the mood for pizza lol

although sadly I bet saleri got a better deal really, as the pizza wasnt that good lol

and it just goes to show that no matter how slick the graphics are, if you dont feel a connection to the place, setting and location, its a worthless waste of space. and I gotta admit that's how I feel about M3 really so far

although its gonna be fun to play as Mr Ali really lol

Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes is the latest game I've purchased, even though it came out in 2012 I had to hunt it down after seeing the film (2013) based on this game earlier this year and found myself enjoying it very much. Loved that it used the whole retro vibe with the music and style from the earlier Batman films and made fun of the more serious tone of the new ones.

Of course even now, I still play GTA: Vice City (2002), as often as I can, just to soak up the great 80s atmosphere and its perfectly use of music.

I've been playing Hitman 2.  There's a big Miami racetrack stage that is quite fun and looks really good graphics-wise.

Yeah I've seen that. It's a level based around a race at Biscane Blvd, Bayfront Park, I believe? Wonder where they got that idea...

I played a bit of GTA V again for the first time in awhile. I'm totally broke but bought one of the cheapest club and did three missions where you get equipment, pick up the DJ from the airport and drop flyers in. I heard one new piece of music I really liked I'll have to search youtube for it.

GTAV was a testlab. for me by far the worst of the series. i stopped playing it months ago. it's far under Mafia III. Mafia III is an anthology game

I done a money bug quite a few months ago where you could get free Deluxos, so I got about 100 of them so I'm set for life on GTA Online lol. Whenever I need cash I sell one or two, I think it's 4mill each. The nightclub DLC was cool,  one of the cooler things they've released recently. I'm not a fan of the bunkers, and futuristic stuff, I feel like that ruined GTA Online so I don't have any interest in playing it anymore.

The previous Hitman game (season 1) is currently free on PS Plus this month, so I've been playing that. Very enjoyable, encourages you to use your brain and be patient. Something I haven't had to do in a video game in a while lol.

I hate the shark cards that have become a part of online gaming. I know I sound like a broken record, but I play Vice City and Scarface on my PS2 as much as any new games. In fact, I got a copy of Vice City for my computer so I could download some of the cool mods.

The Mafia series was fun for me. I hope they do another one.

I never played GTA Online but it looks like they've gone a bit overboard and are not making Saints Row look down to earth. The only time I had a remote interest is when they had that Smuggler's Run pack or whatever it is as I thought they meant they were actually making something resembling their old Smuggler's Run series but sadly from looks of things they just took the logo and slapped it on something unrelated. I really liked GTA V single player though and probably my favorite game they've released in the HD era.

If they want to really make something great for the Mafia series then I think they should set the next Mafia in late seventies/early eighties Las Vegas.

Mafia III director was called by Take 2 bosses. and they gave him the choice to create Mafia IV, or something completely new. he chose to go into a totally new project. the first project was about a spy in Berlin, and was quite promising. then during the development it turned into a musical game, that had finally very few with the original project. on the last news the development was pretty much idle, and even the devs of the company didn't know what kind of stuff they were working on.

there were also sounds about a Mafia IV in Vegas, but it was just a rumor that didn't last long. right now i'm hooked by Mafia III, Farming simulator 19, and Die young. Die young is an indie game that has few defaults. but it's very promising. just bought Elite dangerous too. and so far it doesn't look bad. and of course still playing classics like Assetto corsa, and A. corsa competizione

Rockstar is also still sitting on a project called Agent, that was supposed to be about espionage in the 70s or something. It's been rumored for years, but has yet to see the light of day. And may never, since they seem to have abandoned the trademark.

What I read was that they decided to make their own IP, it was supposed to be a spy in Berlin then somehow turned into a game about a super hero with super powers, then I think they stopped working on that. Hopefully they've gone back to Mafia IV, I think now that (hopefully) the studio is steady/stable, and they aren't rushed - They might actually be able to make a decent game because Mafia III was a hot mess. Mafia IV in Vegas isn't a rumour, someone from the studio confirmed it and actually said that that's what they were planning and starting to work on. It was supposed to be based in 1970s Las Vegas and be heavily inspired by the movie Casino. I'm a massive fan of the Mafia games, at least the ones the Czech studio Illusion Softworks/2K Czech made, two of the best games ever made. Mafia II immersed me like no other game has immersed be before or since, it's just pure magic.

I will give Hangar 13 one more chance. They could make something truly great if they set their minds to it, listen to the fans, and if Take-Two don't rush them and pressure them to release an incomplete game like Mafia III. They could have a fan-survey and ask the fans what they want and expect from a Mafia game and use that feedback to make something that kicks ass.

Not sure if they're still working on it, but it isn't officially cancelled yet even though as you said they have abandoned the trademark, however the game is oddly still listed on their site.. The game itself is ironically a mystery.

you mean they started Mafia IV with all the time, and energy already lost? well if you say it. but i'll believe it when i'll see it. i mean a game like Mafia III is about details for 85%. and details need time. lot of time. i hardly believe a studio owned by a mother company could have so much time. it's not impossible in theory.. here's the article i was refering to

The rumours are the next Grand Theft Auto will be set in the 90’s to avoid how difficult it is to satirise the current world we live in and especially America. I wish they made one in London or some fake british city, the developers are Scottish and I don’t think it would decrease sales. We had the best dance music and club culture during that era so the soundtrack could be have a lot of potential.

I am hoping, probably against all odds, that it will be set in Vice City in the 80s again. I want to play there again in that time period with not only graphic enhancements, but the same DJs on my radio dial. :) Maybe they could add other parts of South Florida and South America, the islands in the Caribbean, etc.

I never played Mafia III even after they gave it away free on PlayStation Plus because from the trailers the campaign gave off a preaching tone with having a black protagonist. I'd watch a movie about that character and setting but sitting through a game's cutscenes were you're likely constantly reminded racism is bad in what's probably a very heavy handed way didn't sound appealing.

When a game needs to cover the enormous costs of it's production budget you really need mass appeal and it didn't have it. I saw someone explain it perfectly after the Battlefield 5 controversy, publishers and studios are making decisions with the primary objective to get favourable reviews on Metacritic. Re-writing history so a multiplayer about the second world war for instance is populated with female characters running around will win it praise from a left-wing and progressive journalists who dominate the games industry  but it's sales will and have been shown to suffer when fans are told they're sexist for wanting realism.

Metacritic was suppose to be informative and help customers make better purchasing decisions but it's changed the content that's going into games. When a studio earns a bad rating even losing out on a few points it can be the difference in missing out on huge financial bonuses. One example is Fallout New Vegas made by Obsidian who ended up having to lay off staff.

Yeah, they actually started it. Well, the concept of it. It was in the process where you're getting things together, starting a new project on their game engine. Then they got the call from parent company, asking if they want to continue Mafia IV or create their own IP, as that article says.

This is the reason why they SHOULDN'T wait longer. Because things will only get worse. But hey, they can be as "offensive" as they want and they will still sell a billion copies because the social justice snowflakes are a very very small percentage, like 0.005%. They just make the loudest noise. Giving in and bowing down to them is the only thing that can damage their sales, like EA with Battlefield, and now Apex Legends is another "woke" game. If Rockstar put in a female protagonist or LGBTQ protagonist for the same of inclusion, that will damage them more than if they ignored politics and done their thing business as usual. Consumers have also learnt to ignore mainstream media news sites, all they do is find something to complain about when a game isn't "woke" enough for them and people are sick of it. People have started leaning towards independent sites for their news sources, popular YouTuber's are even making their own news sites.

People wouldn't get upset with whatever they did, only the "woke" game journalists would. And 99.99% of consumers won't even give a crap about what the game journalists think. Because it's GTA and it's made by Rockstar so we all know it's going to be a top quality product.

GTAV was a big disappointment for many (me included). not to speak about GTAO which was a testlab, but a complete disaster IMO. i stopped playing GTAO months ago. that game is a trolls sandbox. for me selling a lot means nothing. it's not because a game sells a lot that it will enter video games anthology. for me GTAV is an average game. at no moment i had that feeling of real freedom i had with GTAIV which had a much smaller map. Mafia III superpasses GTAV on all levels with much smaller budget. next GTA will need more than money to succeed

and beside i'm playing Elite right now. that game is amazing
