Talk about coincidence. Just minutes ago, I sat through and enjoyed this fantastic and (probably the best) buddy-cop film to come out of the 80s on TV. And I haven't seen a film on TV in years, (most of the time they just send truly horrible films or rerurns of "reality" show, but even though I own 3 copies of Midnight Run, and I couldn't think of anything better than spending the rest of the night watching one of Bobby D' s finest action/comedy roles. 2 hours ago, timm525 said: What's your favorite line? Midnight Run is one of those films packed up, I mean literally half of the film is classic quotes, but if had I have to pick one, it must be the train scene, both fantastic funny and serious at the same time. It's the fact that you're gonna spend ten years for impersonating a federal agent. Jack Walsh: Ten years for impersonating a fed, huh? Alonzo Mosely: Ten years. "MARVIN! WATCH OUT!" I think there were made 3 or 4 sequels, but neither De Niro or Grodin starred in any of them, but I remember seeing one of them, and it was not horrible, but no match compared to the original. Apart from all the good arguments above, it also has lots of VICE guest actors like Jack Kehoe, Dennis Farina, John Toles Bey, Robert Miranda, Frank Pesce, Jimmie Ray Weeks and Philip Baker Hall. A great mix of comedy, action and thriller with an outstanding cast, great story, great dialogue and great banter between DeNiro and Grodin. Dennis Farina is brilliant and a scene stealer in the film; "You and that other dummy better start getting more personally involved with your work or I'm gonna stab you through the heart with a f*ckin' pencil" The whole cast excels. It's one of DeNiro's best roles and it's Charles Grodin's career best. John Ashton as Marvin the moron and Richard Foronji from Repo Man are a good laugh too. ArtieRollins Posted August 20, 2016 Report Share Posted August 20, 2016 (edited) I remember the first time I saw Dennis, that was in Get Shorty (1995) and later on in Snatch (2000) and at first his characters came off as a bit "goofy" but it did not take long to reval that they were really true violent, psychos and Farina went on to steal almost every scene in those movies. Not an easy thing, considering he was up against som big names and when I later on got to see him in Midnight Run, it was no surprise why he landed the roles of mobsters heavies, such as Ray "Bones" Barboni and Abraham "Avi" Denovitz. I would have loved to see him in a Martin Scorsese film, if not Joe Dallesandro, I think the role for Nicky Santoro in Casino (1995) would have beeen close to perfect for Farina, as his characters sure often had a very short and angry fuse, that along with the fact that Jimmy Serrano seemed to have a thing with sticking pencils into peoples flesh, or smashing a telephone through someones skull, or blow torching them to a slowly death: Jimmy Serrano: Don't say a word to me, Sidney, don't say a fucking word to me. I'll get up and I'll bury this telephone in your head. Jimmy Serrano: I'm gonna blow-torch the both of yous if you don't bring back the Duke. But he also had a much more natural, frightening and very intimidating look to him, and instead of that horrible squaky little angry man voice of Pesci, Farina's death stare and ice cold voice would surely make people talk, probably a lot faster than having to try to get some words out of a poor fella, by break their heads in. This one, the limo scene around 02:39 still gives me the shivers: Jimmy Serrano: I stopped by here to tell you two things. Number one is that you're gonna die tonight. Number two, I'm gonna go home, have a nice hot meal, I'm gonna find your wife, and I'm gonna kill her too. It is tie for me, against John Hughes finest hour with his Planes, Trains and Auotmobiles (1987), but Something Wild (1986) is also good one. Starts up as an romantic screwball comedy, then when Ray Liotta makes his approach, it goes way off into a rather violent territory. One or two in a strategic spot, O.K., but it's overdone. Miami Vice always was cool, tough and realistic without any profanity! Vercetti too This scene kind of tells how the film goes from "typical" 80s fun, screwball comedy into being something a little more serious, as Jeff Daniels character, Charlie (one hell of an actor by the way) start of his new "friendship" with Ray, and it comes off as a bit naive and dumb found, almost like when the little shy geeky school kid suddenly gets to hang out with the cool kids. Then around 04:22 you get feeling that this will not be the start of a great and long friendship, and the look on Charlie's face says it all: "Come on Charlie. You gotta admit, she looks like she could fuck you in half" To bad they cut out the part that comes afterwards, as Ray finally show much of a "great guy" he truly is. I might be one of very few on this, but I think Something Wild is Jonathan Demme's finest hour. Unpredictable, funny, romantic and at times very dark (considering many think of it as an family comedy) great acting, especially by Jeff Daniels and a fantastic soundtrack. The film was given a well worthy new DVD/Blu-ray Criterion Collection back 2010 or 11 with great picture and sound quality.
