Hello Robi and welcome to the site. The guns he used were blanks. I believe it has been said somewhere on here that they used .45 blanks.I think the sound of guns was most likely added in as an effect. If you get a chance, go on over to the welcome trainees section and introduce your self to the group.Click ---> here

Converting The guns to fire blanks is not easy, but it's tougher to make the blanks. The blanks are specialty made. It's harder to make an automatic gun fire blanks, because in order for it to have the power of recoil for the automatic to eject the spent shell, you have to have a special high powered blank. These are made by spcialists in making blanks for films.

Some are actual firearms fitted with restricted barrel and reduced spring systems (if multiple rounds are needed), other scenes would use a full replica (though fire stunt blanks only) type prop.Regardless all of the audio is post-produced (including the shell/casing drop noise...a revelation in the MV era for realism..)..... if anyone has ever been on-set for a live-fire scene, it is really un-impressive pop chatter noise of non-gun props....., however, there have been tragic LOF incidences (Brandon Lee), most likely attributed to poor gun wrangling....e/g ONE PERSON ONLY has Access before and after ALL scenes and accounts for ALL weapons... not allowed to actors, or other production personnel until just before live tape runs....any pre-runs or rehearsals are performed with obvious (orange coded) practice/training arms, of similar shape/configuration... all arm mfgs make their popular arms available for inert mold castings for this purpose...

Actually, the first star wars movie used real guns from WW 2, fixed them up to look like space weapons on the outside, but used blanks to get the mussle flash before they added the special effect laser coming out of the gun.You can see this in "the making of Star Wars" when Han solo is in docking bay 94, and stormtroopers try to blast him. He shoots back with a blank firing gun. Also in the actual movie, when Luke shoots the control panel that extends the bridge in the death star (In the scene when he shoots the panel and says, "There. That ought to hold them for a while") you can see the shell that is ejected bounce off the wall! In most versions of the film, you can actually hear the shell drop on the floor!

I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd use it anyway.I guess the explanation about using the high-powered blanks answers one question for me,,,, I was watching #2 Heart of Darkness again and noticed the climax scene shootout muzzle flash of both Crockett and Tubb's weapons were longer than the actor's arms!!! If you watch the DVD in super slo-mo, you can see this. They also show the same scene in the ending credits. I'm watching them on Hulu, so I dont have a pic to post.R/L weapons flash for those guns aren't that big normally,,,, are they? Otherwise, they'd be a HUGE hidden position givaway once fired.

Well those were special "dual action" pistols. Not only did they shoot bullets, but they were also flame throwers too! ;)Makes you wonder what Reb's insides would have looked like after Sonny shot him with his Detonics?

Nope, I try not to imagine that, my wife worked Trauma/ER @ Tampa General during her residency about 9-10 years ago. Man, she has too many gunshot stories, among others.

I can believe that. Tampa General gets the worst of the worst cases in the Tampa Bay area. I almost got a job there several years ago. It was too far of a drive for me daily but the place is non stop. I don't know how the docs and nurses that work trauma can put up with it for more than a few years without getting burnt out?I give her credit!

She did get burned out,,, somewhat. She's S.O.D. down @ Bay Pines now, on a fee basis position, part time for the last 7-8 years, which she loves. Bay Pines doesn't have a trauma center either.I give her ALL the credit!!! :)
