Going to take the Daytona down to Tampa for a celebrity car show. It’s a 5 hr drive. I’ve already put more than 1000 miles on her and it’s more reliable than my BMW  even in the cold, 28 degrees  (here in Florida, only lasts for 4 days). It starts right up with just a touch on the key; the EFI system is the way to go with these cars, carburetor is a thing of the past. IMO

Anyone know who owns this Daytona? It was at the show last year. Hope he’s there this year. Love to see all the Daytonas I can.

In the rear you can get a new bolt 8,10,12 inch to adjust your rear ride height. I watched all this being done and it is something you can do yourself in a weekend. Very few tools needed. The spreader tool can be borrowed from autozone.

I could put three fingers easily between the top of the tire and the fender flare. So I went for a 2 inch drop with the 225/60 15 in the front

Very interesting approach, so you cut the front coils which lowered your front end,  and then used a different length bolt in the rear suspension to presumably do the same there to level the ride height. Thanks very much for the explanation, link and photos.  That will certainly help with ride height and giving a nice leveled look. In my car I will be raising the ride height in the front (going from 215s to 225s for example) and lowering the rear ride height significantly by dropping from 255s to 225s. So in retrospect, this will likely result in a significantly raised nose. Sounds like I will need some lengthening of the rear bolt/suspension height.

I will likely need to enlist a Vette or restoration mechanic on this since the suspension/frame is all Vette, and I am still very concerned about matching up the tire width to the fender flare overhangs. Lowering the rear tire size will significantly recess the new tires into the wheel wells, and increasing the front tire size will cause the tires to protrude slightly from the wheel wells (all while viewed from above.) I am not sure if there is any adjustment for this issue.

We drove down the night before the show (5 hrs). During most of the drive we were right behind a major rain storm. Windshield Wipers were on delay the entire trip. Never got direct rain. Just a constant mist from the road. 

We washed the car off and sprayed chrome cleaner on the rims when we got there. Dryed the car with shammies and parked it in a garage. 

The next morning we were at the car show at 8 am. Parked the car and raised the hood. We detailed the car in a few spots and started looking at all the cool cars. 

The car took second, beat by the Bat mobile. The same car that was parked in the center tent and on the flyer for the car show. The Bat mobile was also on the dash plaque that was in the goody bag that was given to me during registration. Should I say more about why it beat me? 

I was told by a judge that I was in the running for every category, but I hadn’t detailed the car to “car show” standards. The fact that I had driven from Tallahassee to Tampa impressed him. I said it’s a show driver, not a trailer Queen. 

Everyone was cleaning cars with Q-tips and polishing chrome all the way up to the judging. I had inadvertently told a judge that there were to many cool cars to look at, and that I wasn’t going to spend 4 hrs detailing a driver. I didn’t know he was a judge at the time when I made the remark. Lesson learned. Lol

Still the dirty car took second. I beat the General Lee car. I thought for sure it would beat me. It was perfect and the guy kept detailing it all day long. 

All in all I have to decide if I really want this show car experience. That’s a lot of cleaning and I’m just not sure if it’s for me. I like to look at cars while I’m there.

One thing that everyone loved, young and Old was an old bag phone that I placed on my console to appear like a car phone. 

The older people laughed as it brought back memories and the younger gids thought it was crazy that your phone was physically part of your car. But, they loved it too. 

So I decided to make a new armrest pillow that will have the phone built into it. 

Ive finished the negative for the inside of the console and will do a bit of body work and start on the part. I’ll keep you posted as it goes.

I think it will look like it was made into the console when I’m finished.

Funny thing is I still have my old Motorola "BAG PHONE" The thing weighed a ton and I can't believe people lugged that thing around over their shoulder?!?!

I also have my old phone from my Lincoln MarkVIII. It is a Motorola phone with a holder, and the phone was actually in the trunk, but it has the Lincoln emblem right on the receiver handle. The Lincoln is now gone to the crusher sadly but |I kept the phone and clip holder just incase I ever get my own Daytona and I could use it for a prop...

Here’s another ideal I’m going to try. I’m going to take an old Bluetooth headset and wire it to the phone. I’ll be able to have a conversation using the car phone paired with my iPhone. Should work like a old car phone. What do you think ppl will say when they see me driving and talking into an old phone?  Lol

Well in Canada we have a law from Industry Canada that excludes Amateur Radio Operators (like me) and people with "FIXED" radios in their vehicles. The phone law does not apply to us if our radios are fixed (attached to the car) so check your local state laws as they also have this amendment so you don't get a ticket. I don't know which states have this but the ARRL in the U.S. faught hard for this loophole.

Stinger, I’ll check on legality of using a old car phone. Thxs for the heads up 

looks like the Bluetooth mod will be really easy.

Phone console is made.  

Next I’ll shape the foam and sew the cover.

Should look like it was factory installed when I’m finished.

I’ll be able to use the phone to talk on and I can remove the entire pillow/console when I want to.

There’s plenty of room inside the handset of the phone, so I will still have all the functions of a 80’s car phone.

Don't know if your handy with a soldering iron and wiring , but you can grab a new cheap flip phone (they are digital, not analog) and you can put the guts of the phone inside the gutted case of the old phone handle. You can wire up the original DTMF (push buttons) to the flip phone with wires and run a wire to the speaker and mic. You can take voltage from the car battery saving always charging a battery, but you will have to get a small circuit to lower the voltage to the battery voltage...probably 3-5 volts I would imagine? It's easy if your a gadget maker like me or if your not sure take it to a guy who can input the new phone inside the old case.

It will look cool clipped to the holder inside the car and be fully functional. You won't need an antenna or anything else. The old analogue phones of yesteryear were on a different frequency of 800 MHz or less and were of analogue style. New digital phones may still use 800 but many are now at 15,200 and 19,600mhz and are only 500 milliwatts. The old phones were a true full five watts output power to fry your brain cells! :)

It turned out really nice. Both driver and passenger can use it as an armrest. The phone just misses the elbows. 
If it were just my daily driver I would use it with no problems. It's good enough for that type of use. But, since it's going to be judged at shows. I don't think my sewing skills are up to that type of scrutiny.  I'll get one made professionally if I decide to use it as a display at cars shows.

Stinger, it never shows where the phone is in the MV car. It just shows the cord going down. I don’t think it would be were I put my phone. The MV car has C3 interior and mine has the Ferrari kit interior. I just decided that people (young and old) got such a kick out of seeing an old car phone at car shows; that I would make it a distinctive prop. I can simple pick it up and remove it. It’s just a padded pillow. 

However, I can hear better on the car phone (Bluetoothed) while driving than I can on my IPhone 8. Plus it’s a very comfortable armrest too. So far I’ve enjoyed the looks I get when driving and talking on the phone. People take a double take for the car and then they are basically freaked (no better description) that I’m talking on an old phone. It is very apparent what’s going thru their minds by the jaw dropping expressions. Lol

Bluetooth hack. 

I simply gutted the car phone. Took a cigarette lighter charger and used the inside board to bring voltage from 12v  to 5v. Then shortened the charging cord. 

Then used the phone cord from the base to the handset for my speaker and mic wires. 

Everything works like it should and I talk on it and not my iPhone. A blast from the past.
