Problems With the Blu-Ray Release!

Thanks for the grabs Crockettt. Sadly there is consistent haloing around objects, due to excessive sharpening. This may well be inherent in the masters as it's seen on the Mill Creek set too. Evidently it was felt the HD masters needed some artificial pop, which really material like this should not need if handled right. All the more reason why it would be lovely to see fresh new scans of these, delivering a natural genuine detail pop through a consistently encoded tight grain structure of the original film elements. But as that seems highly unlikely, I think one has to welcome these as a 'best yet' in terms of the general picture standard compared to DVD. But still leaves a great deal to be desired in terms of how amazing this could look if the time and money were spent on fully remastering them all from the negatives today. And that's before one gets to the errors introduced in this process, which we've been discussing at length. If it was just the previous limitations of the masters and not the actual errors, I'd be a whole lot more positive about these releases.

So great, that mystery has finally been solved. :D :thumbsup:

I just watched all the videos and these scenes look outstanding, a whole different experience compared to the DVD's. Everything is more clearer, sharper, detailed, bright and colorful. I'm happy to have seen, how Miami Vice looks on Blu-ray, I've only watched the upscaled videos on Youtube, so this is fantastic!

Thanks a lot Crockettt! I'm really grateful for you sharing these videos. :fireworks::fireworks::fireworks:

What a wonderful surprise!!!

Thank you very much for  the uploads, Crockettt. Those pictures are very good...

I wonder if you could also some day upload some "logo" pics, please, especially those from the white glow era. I was not particularly satisfied with them on Mill Creek (though they are better than Universal DVDs from the mid '00s). I can only deal with that because I've found a way to partially fix colors using Intel processor control panel (I've post some of that on the old post here )

I'll upload some from Mill Creek right now (no color correction here, but the jpg images are compressed and may show artifacts):

Some additional info about Mill Creek: I'm finishing Season 4 now, and no audio issues appeared since Definitely Miami from Season 2 (regarding Stereo track only, I'm not testing 5.1) .

On the other hand, I couldn't believe that the opening of Calderone's Return part II would have Edward James Olmos credited! This is outrageous! Why would they mess with this stuff?

Also, though of lesser importance (who am I to say this? I care about opening logo colors LOL), on some early episodes (Heart of Darkness, Cool Runnin'), at the end they've replaced the oldest "Michael Mann production" logos with the standard one that started to appear after Edward James Olmos was part of the show (i'm talking about the MM logos that appear right before the "Universal" clip).

And now content removed, even passworded. Man, that was fast, they must have automatic content identification or something, unless you put anything identifying in the description Crockettt?

I also thought, that was fast, didn't expect it would be removed on the daily motion site. Yes, I would like to download them. Thanks!

Is vimeo still reliable these days? At least in the past, videos with password would last forever.

Not sure, a lot of these video sharing sites are implementing "Content ID" systems which automatically detects TV shows and movies.

I usually use a free cloud service called "pCloud" these days. It's good because they have video streaming on the site along with download. And everything is private/secure, only people with the link can view it.

Here are some pictures, for comparison. I've captured images from the clips Crockettt uploaded (from Fabulous Films) and matched them with equivalent points from my own set (Mill Creek).
I'll put Mill Creek first and Fabulous Films after it in every case.

Just for clarity: these are from the UK set from Fabulous right? :)

Ok, well what strikes me from the captures ivoryjones posted above is that Fabulous appear to have incorrectly set the flag for the output range on theirs. It's the same thing that affected the recent Blu-ray release of The X-Files Season 8, which Fox offered replacements for. It's basically that everything is too dark. Now it can be corrected, if you playback using software that can do it (MPC-HC is free and does it), you can change the output range to what should be incorrect and voila, you get the same levels as on the Mill Creek. It's things like this which are the reason I and others were so reluctant to trust Fabulous films with a purchase, they've got previous on this, as they did the same with The Incredible Hulk series on Blu-ray, you can see the same on captures for that release from them here

The problem is (and I pointed this out in my original review) that they added contrast to remove the "washed" effect you get from old faded film so it's more like it was when it was new and originally aired, however they just added a tad too much of it which removes some of the colour range in dark areas and just makes it more black. Mill Creek seems to be untouched from what Universal sent to them.

With Fabulous Films, I feel like the edits they done works on some levels. Like the hues seem more correct to me, grass is actually green in theirs where it looks like dried grass in the Mill Creek (everything is golden and faded on Mill Creek's which is presumably the untouched original source). The only flaw, as I said before - Is that they added a bit too much contrast into the mix which is unfortunate. Kind of undid the good work they put into it.

See the link I posted to the same with Hulk, it's a simple mistake by Fabulous, not an artistic decision. Ditto X-Files Season 8, it's setting it to PC levels rather than TV that does it.

Could you write me how to do it in MPC-HC ?

Sure, right click the image and select;

Renderer Settings > Output Range > and change it from the correct 0 - 255 to an incorrect 16 - 235

that will undo the mistake they have made and make it look like the Mill Creek, just remember to change it back to 0 - 255 when you finish or everything else you watch will be wrong :)

I'll upload the images again, with some differences: all of them now come from the same software, MPC-HC, and all of them now are .png (it might take a while to load). In my opinion, with both sets under same capture conditions, differences might be smaller, but they're still huge.

I mentioned this a while back, but it's much better to have a demonstration. First is the Blu-ray 5.1 mix, where you will hear the doubling of the sound. Next plays the same master on the Mill Creek DVD (NOT Blu-ray, DVD), it's the 5.1 mix and it does not have the sound problem. Thus, as I said before, these errors were most likely introduced in encoding these masters for lossless audio;

Well that's pretty interesting. What program did you use to view them simultaneously? And is it just me or doe the DVD present more of the image (1:66:1 vs 4:3 maybe?) than the BR?

Ah, it's just a sound comparison with two versions next to each other on my desktop and my phone recording it... nothing fancy ;)

What you're seeing is visually misleading as the Blu-ray is being displayed at a larger size than the DVD - the amount visible in the frame is the same, no cropping difference, just the audio.
