This Week In Miami Vice History

February 3rd - 10th:

"Rites Of Passage", the 16th episode of the 1st season, premiered on NBC on Friday, February 8th, 1985 at 10PM EST. Some notes on this episode (from Miami Vice Wiki):
* Pam Grier would return as Valerie in the Season 2 opener "The Prodigal Son." Though it appears Valerie was arrested after shooting Lile and Traynor, she returns to her NYPD job like nothing happened. Crockett apparently pulled some strings to clear her name, as Valerie thanks him regarding the events of this episode.
* When this episode originally aired, a voice-over during the closing credits announced that Vice fans should "stay tuned, because Miami Vice has been renewed for a second exciting season!"
* When this episode originally aired, the love scene between Tubbs and Valerie was slightly longer and more erotic. NBC ordered the scene cut slightly in subsequent reruns. It has appeared in this slightly cut form in syndication, in the DVD Releases, on Hulu and on Netflix.

**There was no Season 2 premiere episode this week**

"Duty And Honor", the 15th episode of the 3rd season, premiered on NBC on Friday, February 6th, 1987 at 9PM EST. Some notes on this episode (from Miami Vice Wiki):
* This episode was called "The Savage" when it originally aired, but the name was changed to "Duty And Honor" when it went into syndication. This second title is now its official one and has been used on the show's VHS and DVD releases, as well as online. Unlike most other episodes that received name changes (to link two parts of a single story together), the reasons behind this alteration are unknown.
* The opening credits now appear as they will for the remainder of the series: no name credit when the Testarossa passes in the night, Saundra Santiago's name appears in the first ocean pass and Michael Talbott's in the second.
* Edward James Olmos wore a ponytail and did not have his mustache in the opening scenes from Saigon.
* This episode marks the second time Castillo is stabbed in the line of duty.
* The scene in the outside bar includes a brief shot of the game show "Scrabble", hosted by Chuck Woolery, which ran on NBC from 1984-90 and again in 1993.
* The Park Central Hotel (where Castillo and Trahn meet Coleman after finding out about the Savage) still exists in South Beach as a luxury Art Deco hotel.
* The Phoenix Program (a.k.a. Operation Phoenix) was a counter-intelligence operation done by the CIA from 1967-1972 (though some sources indicate portions of the operation continued until the Fall of Saigon in 1975) designed to obtain intelligence on North Vietnamese operations.
* Crockett's "police intuition" appears again in this episode when he immediately notices the Savage out of all the people on the street and tells Gina to speak to him in Vietnamese.
* There is a certain irony in Trahn killing Coleman with the Savage's K-bar, as Coleman was the Savage's operator and is therefore at least partly responsible for the latter's atrocities.

"The Cows Of October", the 12th episode of the 4th season, premiered on NBC on Friday, February 5th, 1988 at 9PM. Some notes on this episode (from Miami Vice Wiki):
* We learn Izzy has twelve telephones at his place of all shapes and sizes.
* The episode was dedicated to Kay Talbott, Michael Talbott's mother.
* The lengthy scene with Izzy on the railroad tracks is a salute to the extended opening of the classic Western "Once Upon A Time in the West."
* Despite this episode's (arguably) deserved unpopularity, it does make a point in paralleling Vice and the classic American Western, both with brave lawmen who try to do the right thing against bad guys concerned only with money and power.

"To Have And To Hold", the 10th episode of the 5th season, premiered on NBC on Friday, February 10th, 1989 at 10PM EST. Some notes on this episode (from Miami Vice Wiki):
* This marks the final appearance of Belinda Montgomery as Caroline and Clayton Barclay Jones as Billy.
* The abandoned hangar where Tubbs and Ramon narrowly escape an ambush is the same one where Evan Freed demonstrated the firepower of MAC-10s in the opening sequence of "Evan."
* With five dead (Louis, Ramon, Lucia, Carlos, Jr. and Maria), the Pendrozas have the most family members killed on Miami Vice, even beating the Calderones (who lost four -- Esteban, Angelina, Orlando and Xavier). In addition, all of the Pendrozas were killed in this one episode, while the Calderones died over three episodes across three seasons.

This information is interesting.  I would have sworn the Calderones got the worst of it.  Thanks mvnyc.

Yup...I'll have to re-watch that episode, I can't remember exactly how all the Pendrozas died!

Well, we have to take the good with the not-so-good every once in a while :)
