Mad Men is right there with Miami Vice and The Sopranos for my personal favorites! Just a magnificent drama. Captures the style and music of the era just like MV did for the 80s. Also, it has a great cast.

Besides going through MV again, I'm currently starting AMC's Mad Men. I had never watched it before...watched a couple episodes on Netflix and really liked it!  So, I got seasons 1&2 pretty cheap on eBay. I'll get the other seasons as I need them. Anyone else watched it...thoughts? It's not a cop/crime show. ;)

Believe it or not...I've never seen The Sopranos.  :o Maybe after MV and Mad Men. ;) But just FYI...from what I've gathered so far from special feature interviews on a Mad Men DVD set, a lot of the people who wrote/produced/worked on The Sopranos also worked on Mad Men--including Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner! Just found that interesting since several here have mentioned both shows recently.

I feel the same way and I am a huge fan of the show. I thought the first five were some of TV's finest since Michael Mann made his mark with Miami Vice and Crime Story but both parts of Season Six were mostly a bore especially whiny AJ from the second half the season. From what I heard it's probably because the creator David Chase was strongly considering ending the series at Season Four but HBO kept pressing him for more seasons. Buscemi was great in Season Five and he also directed one of the series most acclaimed episodes, "Pine Barrens".

It's a pretty addictive show. If you've seen Goodfellas it's a bit similar to that in tone especially the dark humor but has a deeper, more psychological approach to the traditional mob story. It also shares one thing with Vice in that it's very evocative of the era it was filmed in. The mob guys in it were very chatty about the world's many changes during the late-nineties/early 2000's and makes for an interesting return after living through that era.

Just started watching Starsky & Hutch, the second coolest cop show of all time. Also started rewatching The Soprano's. Just finished Burn Notice, and I thought, since it's winter I shouldn't really be watching my summer shows.

I finally started Mad Men. On episode nine of Season 1. While a little slow at the moment, you can't deny that the show is brilliantly acted and written. And the attention to detail is outstanding. I'm definitely gonna stick to it.

I finally finish Sons of Anarchy tomorrow. I'm gonna miss it. The first four seasons were definitely the best. Seasons 5 and 6 were a little dull but still enjoyable. I've heard bad things about Season 7 but honestly I think it's a huge improvement. Especially the last couple episodes. Intense.

Next show I'm gonna watch is Weeds. Looks kinda funny so I'm looking forward to it.

I started watching The Deuce. Lots of penises. It's the type of show which is best viewed alone, after everybody has gone to bed. There are a lot of sex scenes. It's about Times Square in the 70s. Pimps, prostitutes, pornos, vice. But James Franco's characters (Vinnie and Frankie) are the main plot of the series, twin brothers who get involved with the Mafia. The pimp thing is more a side-plot I think, but they kind of tie in because they hang out at Vinnie's bar.

The writing, story, the way they present the early 70s is great. Shows based in the past usually don't go beyond one season (mostly due to the costs of making it), but I feel like this is going to stick around for a few seasons.

You might call me weird for this - But I sometimes skip sex scenes in shows if I feel like they add nothing to the plot. They just make me uncomfortable sometimes. Depends how hardcore it is. I'd be lying if I said I didn't skip a few in the first 3 episodes of this show. (I've only watched 3 episodes so far).

Wasn't quite sure about Brooklyn 99 at first, but now I'm hooked! Plenty of moments with great comedic timing and catchphrases that get stuck in your head.

I also enjoy this show considerably !:hippie:

I have also watched Brooklyn 99, the first two seasons. A funny cop show. The composition of the team and the setting, plus that we have both a Santiago and a Gina on the show reminded me a bit of MV.

I can best relax to comedy shows, so have been watching The Big Bang Theory. It was the only sitcom on television and at one point I decided to give it a chance and came to like it. Not all of it is funny and makes me laugh, but I don't mind that, since I like following the story.

They have started off the new season 11 a couple of months ago. And even made a spin off called Young Sheldon. I guess the show could have ended after the 10th season, but we'll see, if the can continue on to keep it fresh and interesting further on, since most of the stories have already been told and we've seen the cast in all sorts of different situations.

@Matt I just noticed it says you are Bureau Chief, I wonder how many police ranks are there? :)

I just wanted to add two shows to this discussion.  First is the sitcom "The Middle".  This show about a middle-class America family in their everyday struggles to survive has my wife and I rolling with laughter.  My wife is the mother of 3 kids and so many times I hear her say she just wants the slap the oldest child for his comments and the way he behaves. We discovered this show by accident while channel surfing and love it.

The second show has a new season coming this January.  It is "The X-Files".  I was and still am addicted to the mythology, paranormal, conspiracy theories that FBI agents Mulder and Scully investigate.  Great show.

Haha. Yes will do, Bureau Chief Matt! :)  ;)

Apparently the rankings are very different from department to department. Although some are more common.

This is the NYPD Ranks, according to quora.com:

1.Chief of Department.

2.Bureau Chief/Supervising Chief Surgeon.

3.Assistant Chief/Assistant Chief Chaplain/Assistant Chief Surgeon.

4.Deputy Chief/Deputy Chief Chaplain/District Surgeon.

5.Inspector.

6.Captain.

7. Lieutenant

8.Sergeant.

9.Detective (grades 3rd–1st).

10.Police Officer.

Really enjoying Weeds. I'm starting Season 6 today. Then after I finish Mad Men, I think it's time to watch the best of MV and later The Sopranos just so I can stare at Meadow lol. Damn I've been watching way too much TV:).

Had a gloomy day off of work a couple of days ago and binge watched "DEADWOOD" again. I love this show as it has great story line as most of it is actually true!!! The dialogue is outstanding and the characters are larger than life considering most of them are based on real people who existed in Deadwood back in the 1880's

Another series I liked very much was "BETTER CALL SAUL" as I was also a huge fan of BREAKING BAD and BCS has picked up where BB left off.

One thing I have to say is I just watched "VINYL" a couple of weeks ago and I absolutely loved it! The story was so intriguing but the social commentary and the inside musical references where probably too much for the millenials to grasp. I think Mick Jagger did an excellent job of producing this story and it really showed how corrupt the music industry was towards artists in the hayday of Rock&Roll! I am so disappointed that it was cancelled because it ended on a cliffhanger and the story could have gone seven different ways!!! I hope they re-think this and do a season 2 ............

I'm afraid I don't like Deadwood. I think it's bad. It shouldn't have even lasted three seasons. A waste of great actors like Ian McShane and Powers Boothe. The dialogue is awful. The endless swearing is terrible, historically inaccurate and it gets very quickly irritating. I didn't find the storylines interesting.

Breaking Bad. Watched the first three seasons and it didn't do anything for me at all. I had no desire to watch any more. It's overrated.

Hate to disagree with you Tommy but Stephen Bochco won an Emmy for the writing on Deadwood. You have to remember the times back in the 1880's when the ignorance of the miners with a grade three education (if that) were mixed with old Elizabethan English and the dialogue was indeed just as written in the series.

The best part of the show was that those characters actually existed. Wild Bill Hitchcock was murdered in that saloon the way it was depicted. The sherrif was indeed Seth Bullock from Etobicoke Ontario and he was a hardware store owner and ruthless, just as Swerengen was a mean killer an owner of the Gem Saloon. The entire series is based on truth and yes.... there was a bit of dramatic licence but basically it tells the story of how the Indians were screwed out of their land...yet again...by mining interests. What can be more entertaining than a real story of historical events?

Sorry this did not appeal to you.........

Been watching the Vikings on the cable channel History.  Kind of a reality/adventure series, dramatized and with fictional dialogue of course, but based on what we know about real people and real events.  Plenty of action/violence etc but portrays the Vikings for the first time as real people with the problems we all have as well as being cruel fearless warriors.  As pagans their mindset/morality was different.  Lagertha is a beautiful queen/warrior/mother/ambitious ruler/lover who is every bit as ruthless as any man.  Recent scientific finds show some women were also warriors.  Show is very popular, they are filming season 6 as season 5 is being broadcast.  As a history nut, it appeals to me on several levels.

I must say, it's always weird for me hearing, that summer season starts in December. :) Lucky you! How many degrees does it get the highest?

Summer in Melbourne, Australia is probably the most inconsistent in the world. Like, all last week it was above 30°C, but today is a cool 15 and bucketing down rain. All week is looking miserable 17, 19, 23, 21, 21. Usually at the end of December it heats up again, usually high 20s, low 30s, then late January and through February are our hottest months and occasionally we get heat waves in the low 40s but didn't last year weirdly.

Once every 5 years or so we get a soggy tropical summer where it's always overcast, rainy, humid, stormy. I think it's going to be one of those this year.
