Hurricane Irma

Hurricane Irma seems to have a bead on Miami.  Is anyone else watching to see how the Gold Coast fares?  Is there anyone in this group that lives in that area?  I have only driven through Miami once on the way down to the keys and then back again.  If there is major damage, maybe I should take this as an opportunity to go down and volunteer to help out?  ;(

it struck pretty damn heavy in the caribbean. Here's a video from St. Croix, aka 'St. Andrew's Island, however there were places that got hit much harder:

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone in Irma's path. Be careful, stay safe!

Indeed.  The projection main path is the eye of the storm directly into the Everglades, to the east of Miami.  But it is so big, no matter where the eye goes, the entire width of the state will be covered.

I'm not working right now, so i am really considering volunteering to help out down there.  Does anyone know how a yankee like me would go about finding an organization to work with getting down there and working for?

Well folks, this will likely be my last post for quite some time.  This storm is heading directly for Miami.  I am hoping for the best and wish the same for my fellow Floridian members on this site.  Take care!

The Red Cross does a lot of good and always needs volunteers.

You may not hear from those of us on Fla's West Coast for a while either, Timm, Tony, and me.  We'll still be alive and kickin' but power outages are a real possibility.  I know how to prepare since I am originally a Miamian and have been through some bad hurricanes and even one before they gave them names.  I'm as ready as I can be and plan to stick it out.  Good luck to all and thumbs up!

Thanks.  I was just looking at their website an hour ago.

The news just said they are shutting down the Turkey Point Nuclear power plant plus one other.  So power is likely to be limited, especially after all the lines are knocked down.  This thing is wider than Florida, so it looks like this one is going to hit a whole state. :(

I hope everyone affected stays safe and it isn't destructive and it doesn't do much damage. I hope it misses the state entirely.

I really want to go back to FLA soon.

Logging in to see how all our Floridians are doing.

I'm especially wondering what's going to happen with the highways that are backed up; if people will be stranded in the clogs and completely exposed in enormous traffic snarls.

Amid all the stories and themes of people helping people there will also be those about fighting at the fuel pumps etc., so everyone please keep your wits and watch out for hotheads and unrest, do what you have to do to keep yourselves out of unsafe civil situations.

St Martin vids of inside the hurricane are nearly shocking. be sure to find yourself a safe place to wait in. that thing is bad, really bad. it's total chaos right now on french islands. we are lucky the harbour is still operational, but Princess Juliana is like it received a nuclear charge on it. all people on french islands are very shocked. i think we'll have to build bunkers like the japanese in the pacific. because these things are going to happen often according to specialists

@ Tommy verscetti: unless you go there to help. i think our plans to go there are delayed for at least one year. in St martin some people were wondering if they'll ever be capable of reconstructing, regarding the size of the damages

I'm picturing Castillo sitting on his back porch sipping tea, unfazed.

Tubbs on an airplane halfway to New York, looking at his cell to see if Valerie has responded to his texts.

I'm a Florida resident & as of two weeks ago a new home owner w/2 little girls so I'm terrified!

I talked to PMT's daughter & she wishes us all luck as she still has family/friends there. Even if she & PMT moved to TX.

Honoroble but keep in mind it's hot!

literally imagine being in a sauna - fully clothed while doing manual labor & your getting rained on.

Sauna!

Friend of mine told me today that he was going down with a group to help out this week.  I sent him a message to see if he had room for me too.

I know, I've lived in Florida before.  I also went through a heatwave summer in 2012, with 12 day over a hundred degrees working my outdoor business.  I'm used to it.  But i've also been a volunteer firefighter, emergency medical responder, Lifeguard Chief, dive rescue qualified, went through jump school and ranger school.  Also have degrees in biology, limnology, and herpetology which might be helpful too.
