Interesting ep - be back later to post properly - kinda reminded me a little of both Everybody's in Showbiz and Victims of Circumstance.

This was a real sleeper ep. for me. Never could figure out why they wanted the old guy killed so bad. So what if he posted his manuscript???I gave this one a 3.

I could only muster up a seven for a rating on this one...Had great potential and story until the Hotel inside bar scene where Trudy and Gina pull their badges from a like a few stories up....I felt this episode lost it from there...I wish I could be in a Vice safe house as this one was awesome, again. The party with very uncharectoristic music and the actual band playing(Sucidal Tendencies) was interesting and Yet, I dunno...Can I change my vote to a five or so...? J/K...Payback was soo good, it's tough to follow up and this one isn't the one IMO....My 2¢....I loved Larry's shirt in the intro, though...Mike

i was thinking 6.5, but have rounded down to 6/10.some of it was OK. i did watch with interest, but it was still disappointing, especially since there were some good episodes before...and with this, the standard went down,

This episode is dreadful. It is so boring! Terrible in every way. One of the worst episodes of season 2 and possibly the whole series. An example of just how bad season 2 could get. I was so relieved to see the end credits. This an atrocious episode. 2/10

Episode #42 Free VerseThis one deserves a giant yawn. Absolutely awful. I can't think of one thing in this episode that redeems it. I give it a 2.

I'll go against the grain here and give this a 10. No I'm not drunk and the cider bottle isn't out folks. I absolutely love the music in this episode and Jan's work is amongst his best here. Storyline is different to most other episodes and just love the whole 'feel' of it. Best of season 2 and I would have liked to see Hector return in season 3.

There are others like me. I'm a junky for this episode. Nofretz loves it and so does Legba. Of course, I dobn't know if they'll come out of the closet in public.....

Surprisingly I enjoyed Free Verse on my latest viewing; I thought I wasn’t for some reason. There’s not much action in this one, but there’s a good story to tell, very political also. Hector is played very well; quite an amusing character and the scenes with him in the club are extremely amusing. Tubbs scenes trying to flirt with Bianca were quite amusing, such a player is Tubbs isn't he, although it didn't really work here although he got a hug at the end. The ending is good and the song choice perfect. This episode is not perfect however; the scene with the poetry bored me, despite the fact I do like Jan Hammer’s Poem music and also the scene where Gina & Trudy shoot from the balcony is not done as well as it should have been, and seems rushed. Also there isn’t an abundance of action as I've already mentioned. Overall though I enjoy this episode, it has a good story, good performances, amusing in places, but also slow in places. 7/10

Is it just a coincidence or does Jan do some of his best work on some of the worst episodes? Another that comes to mind is "Score" Aside from the music, it's no sale on this episode. I give it a very generous 3

This is another political episode, rather than the usual drug busts of Miami Vice. I guess it started with "Back in the World" Hector Sandobar, the poet, as Tubbs said is "quite a character." Funny line : he says to Gina "are all the police officers as pretty?" Castillo introduces himself & Hector says, " you just answered my question." Nice safe house, right on the beach, although I thought a sniper in a boat could get a shot at him. Not too safe. I enjoyed the poetry & Hector has a likeable personality. Sonny & Rico always show up in time to take out the assasains. I like this episode & give it an 8.

Lol. Sorry Shill. I have to say it's not one of my favourites. I'll start off with the negatives though and end on the positives.Firstly the biggest problem I had with this episode is that in quite a few places it drags. I much prefer the faster paced episodes like "Whatever works" and "Yankee Dollar".Secondly why in hell would the local Vice squad be doing a job which should be handled by the local PD or the Feds? An attempt was made at answering this question near the beginning of the episode, but Zito's explanation of "it's because we're so good" doesn't hold water. No sir!I thought the fact that Sandoval's own people i.e the Left worshipped him as a god, yet wanted to kill him in order to make him a Martyr was far fetched. You don't kill somebody who you love and respect and who also strengthens your cause. What was going on with the nightclub scene? A really weird eclectic mix. You've got a band that look like Run DMC (A Hip Hop group) rapping to a punky riff while an odd bunch of punks and mainstream disco dancers are trying to dance. Then what looks like a Hells Angel comes to pick up a girl who's dressed like Cyndi Lauper. Maybe the club specialised in admitting people that had been booted out of various other clubs earlier that evening? (including Sandoval!).When I watch any Vice episode and my partner is in the room she is always analysing whatever the female characters hair and clothes look like. She said Blanca was dressed like a banana in this episode. Also, she noticed Gina and Trudy's matching suits at the beginning of the episode, what was all that about?Good to see Luis Guzman in this episode, all be it briefly.Miami International Airport looks real Art Deco in this episode. It looks like a museum!Speaking of "Whatever works", the actor who played Manuel in this episode also played Davilla the cop killer in that one.I like how PMT always does jealousy really well. Watch his face when Blanca greets Manuel at the party.Spot the Vice cliche during the Gina and Trudy surveillance scene i.e the Bikini babe walking a dog. It's like spotting Oranges in "The Godfather" films. Hell I'm not complaining though.I liked the subtle comedy in this episode, for example when Tubbs says something like "Jackpot ladies... cab dropped some crazy Dude in a wheelchair outside Miami springs", also when Blanca gets the call from the hitman posing as the hotel receptionist "your father is downstairs in the lobby. I'm afraid he's very drunk".... "Oh thank god. That sounds like him".Watch as well when Zito smiles after watching Sandoval touch up that lady at the party... the statue next to him also looks like he finds it amusing!I also find it funny how Zito checks out that girl who walks past him while he's on the phone to Castillo.Loved the final scene though, and the tune that accompanied it. I'll give the whole episode 6.5 out of 10.

Yeah I found that bit amusing, I really do wish they had developed his character more. Zito/Switek/Gina/Trudy all certainly got a fair bit to do in this ep.

Gina at the art exhibition was hot! Liked the scenes of the beachview outside the safehouse - one near dusk looked really mellow. I think a few scenes shot near this time again - similar to Payback. Poet's story was interesting - I've seen the whole artiste's 'lost his creative ball' thing before so it struck a chord. Didn't think the poetry recital was too bad actually. Liked Sonny's comment at one point about wanting to get back to drug-dealers as at least you could tell why people wanted to kill/deal. He plays the whole exasperated look really well at the end when they have to shoot to kill one of the men they thought would protect their poet. Definitely feel they copied some of this ep later with eps like Victims of Circumstance and Everybody's in Showbiz and even to a certain extent eps like Stone's War in terms of a political subject matter. This ep still has some of that unmistakeable Season 2 style about it though... enough to warrant a 7 out of 10 at least.

Yeah the club reminded me a little of the aliens dancing away in Return of the Jedi - Sy Snootles et al came to mind...
