If you chose the adjustable rear sight on the model 4506 it had a sight guard' date=' which provided excellent protection of the rear sight assembly if the pistol was dropped or bumped against hard surfaces, etc. It was also one of the only pistols (if not the ONLY one) to offer this feature and was one of the reasons I bought a 4506 back then. This was actually a VERY good thing to have especially if this was a duty weapon. It was also available on their 9mm models as well.I'm surprised they didn't have Crockett use the newly instituted sight guard version when they swapped out his older 645 to the 4506. Personally I always liked the sight guard on this pistol but apparently it just wasn't to be a part of Vice.[/quote']No, there's absolutely no difference in terms of what holsters or other related accessories will work with the fixed sight vs. the adjustable sight version of the model 4506. I know this because I replaced my model 645 back then with the 4506 with adj. sights and it fit the original holsters I had for the prior model. I happened to carry the same shoulder rig as Crockett did in the show and I didn't have to change out the holster when I got the updated S&W. And by the way, I did NOT choose this setup because DJ used it on the show. This shoulder rig had a lot of very good recommendations back then so I tried it out and really liked it. It's very comfortable for those who have to wear it for long periods of time. The sight guard I'm referring to might add an ounce to the overall weight of the pistol (if even that much) but in terms of requiring different accessories, that just isn't the case. The sight guard is merely a pair of metal "ears" that stick up on either side of the rear sight for protection. It wouldn't require any special fitting.

I've just never seen someone packing one with a target sight in a holster before so I wouldnt know.and yeah from what I understand the galco holsters, specifically the summer confort and the miami are very comfortabile for daily carry. after all you've got the weight of the pistol and the mags being held at half height distributed over both shoulders evenly along with a backstrap.although I might be thinking of the bianci in that case.and hell even tubbs had a galco holster for his model 49 in S3 just like Crockett.

I looked at one that did and found myself wanting to use the wings of the rear sight as the rear notch which would of made my rounds go very high. Mine is like Crockett's with the simple rear blade and not the Novak which has a recessed blade which I don't like. I guess Crockett had it right in his choice of sights.:)

My S&W 4506 had the fixed Novak sights when I first bought it. However, I changed the factory original sights, for LPA sights, which can be adjusted for windage and elevation. My S&W 1006 came with the factory original adjustable sights. I like the factory original sights much better. The one thing I did not like about the 2nd and 3rd generation S&W autos was the magazine safety feature, where you have to have a magazine in to fire it. A gunsmith friend of figured out how to remove it, and all of my S&W 3rd generation autos no longer have it. They fire just fine without it.

Actually, Tubbs carried two Sig P225s in a double Galco Miami Classic in black. The 49 was still on his waist. The 4506 is thinner in the front than the -1 and 1006 and therefore a little lighter. I like the look of the standard sights and have them on the 4505 but the others, 4506-1 and 1006 have target sights.I like the shorter 1066 best when wearing a shoulder holster. I also had a gunsmith polish the sides, disconnect the mag safety and do a trigger job as well as install a 16lb spring. Dunno how it shoots though as I use the tricked out 745 on the range.

Car One discovery? Do tell!

Sorry but while double checking my facts I disproved my own theroy' date=' atleast to a point. you see I was looking up the ferrari 308 on the expensive car website as I noticed that after watching this video from the Hidden 1987

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vTzjfHB4AI&feature=related

that the mirrors on it at 0:58 were the same mirrors as the ones used on the vice car, the vilatoni tornado mirrorsEingefügtes Bildand to me they look better when there further back, not as far forward as they are on the camera car like on the 308 there, like I think they would look better if they were pulled back to about where PMT's watch is in this shot, lining them up with the top of the windshield rather than having them so far forward, yet still have the same height as to preserve that iconic shot from the pilot.Eingefügtes Bildand while watching No Exit again there was a breif cut to don with the bad guy hanging over the door with Car 1 right before they get to PMT yelling about getting shot at with an M60 machine gun.right after this scene:Eingefügtes Bildand you can tell its car one from the smaller nose, the chrome on the windshield and oddly small tires in the front and big ones in the rearand one of the odd things I noticed about some of the 308's like thesehttp://www.finecars.cc/en/detail/car/125360/index.html?no_cache=1&ret=63http://www.finecars.cc/en/detail/car/159362/index.html?no_cache=1&ret=63http://www.finecars.cc/en/detail/car/162200/index.html?no_cache=1&ret=63is that they've got some sort of psudo valtoni tornado mirror on them and I swear in that snipit from no exit and some of the long distance shots they had of it in S1Eingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildit looked like the mirrors were smaller and didnt have that arched bit hanging off of them like those tornado mirrors do. like it may have had those particular mirrors from the 81' 308s on them.http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5583&stc=1&d=1332818114 but I cant really tell if they do or not as in some shots it looks like it could be those mirrors yet in others they look the same as the normal tornado mirrors of S2 although in that particular instance its from S2' where it only made two apperances and they could have changed them over for S2 with car 1 but I'm just not sure. and its two apperances for S2 are in Whatever works as the neglected daytona and in yankee dollar for the entire episode as Car 4 was indisposed because of that guy who while fixing the damage to the nose from Buddies decided to sell some noise suppressors for SMG's out of it after he was done to some undercover federal agents while using it as his mode of transportation and thus the car was confiscated for a couple of days as evidence.and with the guns I'm not quite sure what tubbs packed in the latter seasons as I'm only upto about S3 as honesltly I'm really hesstant to go into S4 and S5 past the episodes that I know are good for obivious reasons.but I do know from looking at the Imfdb he packed a sig 230 in some episodes and a sig 220 in 9mm in particular for the last episode along with the 49 in a hip holster, but no sign of the 230.and he had the 49 in a hip high holster for when irish eyes are crying after the scene where the daytona bit the dust and it also showed up in stones war hence his quick draw after he goes for a pad of paper while crockett is smashing things to get info out of him for irish:http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5586&stc=1&d=1332819668http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5585&stc=1&d=1332819667http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5584&stc=1&d=1332819474also it does look like his 49 had 3 finger grove packmyer grips on it, hence it being in a holster rather than a pocket as it makes pocket drawing difficult but yet offers much more control over the gun under firing conditions

You are rather observant. The Ferraris you pictured seem to have the Baby Tornado mirrors on them. I prefer the Californian and the Turbo. The Tornados were only used in the States. The Daytona originally came with Californian. On guns, Tubbs always wore the same 49 with Pachmayr grips (they only make one kind for the Smith J-frame, no grooves). He used the same open belt holster as well. Once he carried a Beretta 380, once a Detonics Scoremaster 6" (in the swamp) and once a dual tone SigSauer P230 (Native American episode). The Sig P225s, not 220s, were worn in Freefall in the shoulder holster. He also had three SBS shotguns, an Ithaca 37, a Wilson Combat S&W 916 and a Remington 870 plus the side by side. In his hotelroom he also had a S&W model 36 (2" J-frame).

I had thought that was also a possibility but given that on Sonnys car it looked like they were normal with the baby tornado mirrors I though maybe it was something else, but on the other hand I havent really seen any long distance shots of sonnys car like car 1 so it may look the same as car 1 from further away.and actually most of the daytona's seem to come with these particular mirrors that come on this black onehttp://www.finecars.cc/en/detail/car/14122/index.html?no_cache=1&tx_anamerashowroom_pi1however for the most part the replicas do have one of those three mirrors and I've only seen one replica with the original mirrors on ithttp://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0058/index.htmlbut interestingly enough the real daytona used in the show for the pilot look's like it did have the californian mirrors on it Eingefügtes Bildand I've only seen one other with those on it and it seems like on that one its further forward.http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5594&stc=1&d=1333052293are you sure it was a sig 225? I thought it looked like the 9 round 9mm sig 220 from the length of the grip

I wish I had that Daytona. I'd slap on 9x15 Borrani rears, which were a rare option on those cars: Standard they came with 7.5 with 215 rubber but one could order 255/60 on these 9x15. Racing Daytona even had 9+11 Campagnolos.Back to the Tubbs' Sigs, I'll have another look but I remember when I saw it for the first time it bothered me that he didn't carry M11/P228s. It stuck with me that he used single stack P228s, i.e. P225s. I could be mistaken but doubt it.

and its two apperances for S2 are in Whatever works as the neglected daytona and in yankeed dollar for the entire episode as Car 4 was indisposed because of that guy who while fixing the damage to the nose from Buddies decided to sell some noise suppressors for SMG's out of it after he was done to some undercover federal agents while using it as his mode of transportation and thus the car was confiscated for a couple of days as evidence.

Not to change the subject, but I was wondering where you (Kavinsky) found out that the Daytona was "confiscated for a couple days" and thus not used in "Yankee Dollar". I knew about it being used by the mechanic who was arrested, but had not heard about the confiscation, etc.

I heard about there being bigger optional tires for the daytona but I wasnt that sure of the specifics, actually I kind of like the idea of going with bigger tires for the replica like on this one:http://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0050/index.htmlas I just really like the look of the bigger rims on it plus the markadian/ mcburnie flares are based on Paul Newmans racing daytona from 77 so it probably had those bigger ones on it to begin with.funny though that on the forum where I found that photo of the one with the calfornian mirrors on it they were saying it was a replica and that they didnt like the wedge design of it even though its definitely a real one and not a conversion eithermust have been raised on cars like the scion XB or the nissian cube I guess

I knew about it being used by the mechanic who was arrested, but had not heard about the confiscation, etc.[/quote']if I remember correctly I was trying to figure out what happened to the grill to change its apperance in S2 in the daytona thread. and as we talked about awhile ago I had noticed that up until yankee dollar it seemed like the nose had been banged in abit as the engine mount was sticking out lower than the nose in the front.and what I thought had happened was that the car got the nose banged in from the buddies car chase. the 5th episode of the second season causing the grill to get banged upwards and lay on the bumpers on the top after the mounting points probably got damaged. and afterwards at some point the nose got banged out again as the engine mount didnt seem to stick out past the middle of the second season and thus it probably went in for that repair right before the filming of yankee dollarand one of the things I stated when trying to figure out something in the daytona thread is that I believed that for S2 car 1 was used purely as a backup car only for S2 and thus something must have happened to car 4 as during the episode yankee dollar only car 1 saw alot of use for that particular episode including close up shots which it never really was used for as they purely used Car 4 for almost 100% of the filming of the second season save for that one episode and when they needed to leave the car out on the docks to look neglected for whatever works.and I believe Jurrasic actually checked the court dates for that particular guys arrainment and checked the filming dates for that episode yankee dollar and found that they did actually co inside and seeing as I think it said he was trying to sell them out of the car it might have been used as evidence for the arrainment and then given back to the show after that explaining why they used car 1 for that one episode out of the blue even though car 1 would have been ideal for that stunt that got the nose banged in during buddiesas the nose is noticeably higher off of the ground with Car 1 than on car 4. one of the things I picked up on while watching yankee dollar when they go to her brothers place during the episode as I thought the nose looked weirdly smaller and the dash looked abit rough.

I'm with you on flares. Actually the Racing Daytonas came with different sized ones and one could order one's own car with various sized flares just like the Aston Martin Vantage of the 80s.This pic shows mild flares which are ideal because of the wheel sizes. Mind you that the replicars had wider axles and the flares were a necessity. The originals came with 7.5/7.5 or 7.5/9 alloy or 8/8 or 8/9 Borranis. Since one can still buy 9, 11, 12 and 16 inch wider original racing wheels, one can go 11/12 like some cars were or better 9/11. I would use 9" Borranis in the front and widened 8" to 11" in the rear, shod with 245/295 VR rated rubber. I am also partial to the front spoiler shown. New Campagnolo wheels $2500 each:http://www.ferraripartsexchange.com/wheels.htm

jesus that's quite a hot rod although I think I'd rather stick with the wire wheels. plus those wheels on the one with the 16's are actually the decendant of the wire wheel maker that was the one markadian used on the vice cars. zenith wire wheels which simply just had its name changed over to my knowledge to dalton' date=' plus it would be abit cheaper although I think just for accuracies sake I'd probably go with the borani wire wheels eventually.as they look damn good on this car too[url']http://www.jaylenosgarage.com/cars/custom-built/excalibur-rs-1/index.shtmland its even got a red spinner sticker similar to the ones the daytonas on the show hadand I didnt know that you could order that on astons back in the 80's. although I gotta admit I'd probably go for more the same size tire in the front and the rear just for symmetries sake. Something I'm abit of a stickler on although I think I like it better when its got a faintly arched up rear end to match the real one too.and thats kind of something I want to also try on the vette prototype in addition to the manual trans mixed in with no power steering, you know see what I like without the trial and error of doing that to a car with a custom body that no ones making parts for anymore plus it would be easier to find someone trustworthy to work on it with the normal vette. then once I go for the daytona they probably couldnt say no to working on it as I'd have been a loyal customer at that pointalthough frankly I think I'd like to do most of the work on my own if its simple enough, there is actually plenty of websites that show just how to work on the vette plus the whole vette forum where it seems like everone is actively trying to help everyone else out on there own DIY projects.

I gave the alloy wheels as an example for size only. I would also go for wire but have them redone in the wider size. Daltons don't look original and Borrani still makes wheels so that is no problem.Check this out:http://www.astonmartins.com/v8/index.html80s Astons had three widths, engines in 5.3, 6.3, 7.0 and 7.3 liter configuration straight from the factory. Anything went really. Porsche since 83 did the very same thing. In the late 70s, the Aston Martin Vantage rode on Pirelli P7s 275/55R 15 on 9x15 BBS front and rear. British cars loved the wide front tire concept, the Germans did not. 911s had 195/215 and 205/225. The Bentley Mulsanne Turbo R rode also on 275/55 on 7.5 Ronals. I got too much knowledge - my head is hurting now.

I got too much knowledge - my head is hurting now.[/quote']hmm if I remember correctly awhile back I did just for curiosity look at the aston workshop to see what exactly they were offering for upgrades for the DB5 after top gear did a bit on them but I didnt think that would apply to the original V8 vantages as well.funny though how it describes what sounds like the equivalent of a 454 vette here with the first onehttp://www.astonmartins.com/v8/v8_6_point_3_7_litre_conversion.htmand if the germans prefered thin front tires on the front of the 911 and fat ones on the rear I guess that explains alot of why the 911 had snap away characteristics back then.although back when my father test drove one back in 69 or 70 I think the one he tried had thin tires all around when it came out from underneath him around that long bend at 40 mph. Part of the reason why he went with the first 914 that came out back then after he finished up with his fiat 124 spyder.sadly though if he had waited a little bit he could have gone for a 914/6 but that didnt come out till about 6 months latter, but he did really like the thing and has always kicked himself for missing out on it.

That tells you a little about their mentalities. Germs were understated and the Brits are the US musclecar counterparts. The Aston and Mustang could be compared in terms of image and being larger than life in power. The Countach is pure Italian, totally useless beauty with raw power and the German just enough to make it awesome.Even nowadays one can take a classic Aston and have it flared at the factory and the engine enlarged to 7l if one wishes so. I think the blue AM Volante that Tubbs drove with it's powder blue dash and steering wheel would have suited him ahellofalot better than the caddy. The Aston and Daytona would have been the ideal car. Tubbs should also have worn a gold Cartier Panthere in season one and carry a slightly bigger gun (Smith K-frame in 38/357) but not the shotty because it didn't really fit under his suit. He should have kept it in the car.Back to tires, on my German and British Restomods, I put 275/40R17 under a 560SL and 235+275 under a 911. Also 255/45 under a Jag. It still has to look right.

MAAAAAN Am I glad I saved this information for everyone' date=' and for VICE history![/quote']Thanks Coop - I had seen the article before but didn't realize that the car had been confiscated by the police, but it makes sense. It's really a strange story that the mechanic actually took the car for his "illegal" activites. I would think you would want to take a less conspicuous car - since the car was on TV every week at that time, people would definitley notice it - even in Miami. Thanks again - for this article and for all the other great stuff that you have saved!

plus its a white yellow, not a bright in your face yellow that blinds you so bad like ferrari yellow that you cant enjoy the lines of the car. although I would probably have him go for a more subduded color for it.and with the firearm I was thining something like the model 13 packing 180 grain .38 rounds

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDQIoRzp7oI

with the bodyguard as a back up and the shotgun just tucked away in the car somewhere rather than on him which kind of seemed like overkill, plus how do you run with a 3 shot 12 gauge hanging off of your back?

Actually a 560SL would have been a good choice.Funny that you mentioned the k-frame model 13. I also thought him to be better armed with a tree inch round butted 13 but158gr SWJHP. In a cross draw holster that would enable it to draw from a closed double breasted jacket. Just have the pachmayred butt between the fold of the garment for a fast draw. I've tried it myself and it works. You wouldn't want to carry in the back where you'd have to lift the unbuttoned jacket. Then the 49 as a backup back there. 11 rounds of 38 ready to go. Also speedstrips in his pockets or belt. The 3 and later 2+1 12 gauge should have been left in the car. Also the Ithaca was to techni-cool looking for Tubbs. He needed a classic blue finished, chrome bolted Witness Protection 13" 870, exactly like this one but using the blue Wingmaster rather than the parkerized Police as a base model: The Beretta could be left in the glove box. I always found it odd that he carried the badass AOW shotty but yet the 49 which is more suited for a regular detective.Overall still all classy guns; better than today's generation who want cops to carry dual 50 cal Desert Eagles or as they know them, "Deagles".
