Movies / shows filmed in Miami

Yeah, but I've read that a lot of the old (aka the cool) Miami from those awesome by-gone days is no longer there...and like most other cities, Miami has torn down and redeveloped much of the original art deco and landmark buildings that originally made it unique and "sizzling" with excitement. But, maybe there's still some of the old historic areas of Miami left...and some filming there would be a nice change from high-rises and condominium buildings that seems to be the make-up of every city now.

I just posted Where The Boys Are (1960) on my site. Alot was shot in the studio (MGM) but there are some good Ft. Lauderdale scenes. Mostly the beach near the Elbo Room (same as whatever works) and a house at the end of Riviera Isle Dr. off Las Olas.

I've been watching some of my episodes of "Surfside 6" and am trying to see what scenes might have actually been in Miami, and which ones were sets back in Hollywood.I love this old show...somewhat "cheesy" as it may be. Sometimes I'm in the mood for the bad guys to get "got" and the good guys to win. Both shows took place in Miami...but "Miami Vice" didn't always have a happy ending. ;)There are usually a few scenes of the outside of the Fontainebleau Hotel and the supposed Surfside 6 houseboat docked across the street--which were truly in Miami. However, most of the inside scenes were filmed on sets/soundstages on the Warner Bros. lot in Hollywood. Surfside 6 actually was a real Miami address where an unrelated houseboat really was docked. However, I think the houseboat used in the show was not actually docked at the real address--it just supposedly was. Although in the show it was... whether or not the real Surfside 6 address truly was across the street from the Fontainebleau Hotel as well, I don't know? ?(I wonder how much of this area near and around the Fontainebleau Hotel was used in episodes of "Miami Vice"--and if so how much the area had changed in between the shows? It had been a little over 20 years since "Surfside 6" had graced the TV screen by the time "Miami Vice" came around. Now it's been a little over 20 years since "MV" went off the air. I just wonder how much is still there from those shows...and how much has been redeveloped or changed?

It is interesting how Miami has been preserved on film and you can see how it's changed over the years. And in Florida movies lots of familar faces from Vice always crop up.

I just learned the location of the Paradise Cove club from the end of Tony Rome. I have updated my location web site including a link to a youTube clip that shows the interior now which is largely unchanged. The video is about the owner who was cited by the building inspectors for recently adding an addition to the club w/o a permit. The owners defense plan... Showing the movie Tony Rome from 1967 that clearly shows the second floor and that the club is unchanged since Frank Sinatra was there, even the same exact wooden bar.

Wow thanks for the kind words. It really is a labor of love. I would never have guessed years ago that my love for Miami Vice would turn into a location hunting hobby/addiction. It is fun, I meet great people like all of you and it keeps me out of trouble as long as I don't ignore my wife too much:happy:

The Filmography section of this site has a list of movies filmed in Miami going back to the early 40s. http://www.filmiami.org/home.asp It will answer a lot of questions about what was and was not filmed there. Strangely it does not include TV. Burn Notice fans will want to check it for current film permits.

There seems to be a marked reduction in big movies filmed in Miami for many years - I mean The Specialist and The Birdcage were big in the 90s and Miami Vice in 2006 . There was even an article Ive read recently where film companies are being offered tax breaks now to film in Miami.:D

ANother movie, albeit not filmed in Miami(it was LA) that keeps that quintessential 80 over the top pastels and neon look though, was To Live and Die in LA

I have just published another Frank Sinatra movie on my location web site. A Hole In The Head. A good movie that came out in 1959 and revolves around the Cordozo Hotel at 1300 Ocean Drive. We also see allot of the Fontainebleau as well as the Victor, West Flagler Kennel Club, Hoffman's (Sex World),and Ocean Drive. Check it out http://www.sffl.comcastbiz.net

Wild Things is one of my favourite Miami movies. It kind of has the same sultry atmos of Body Heat. Stunning opening credits sequence. Beautiful aerial photography. It starts in the Everglades then moves to the suburbs to the mansion islands and downtown. Just beautiful.I like the Only Fools and Horses episode in Miami too. Rico Ochetti in that should be familar to Vice fans

Body Heat and Wild Things are also my favorite films that were shot in Miami. Both look and sound great on blu-ray as well.I think some of "Donnie Brasco" was shot in Miami? The 1988 tv movie "Glitz" with MV alumn Jimmy Smits was shot in Miami as well. John Diehl also co-starred too.

Great Charlie. Your link to page 2 doesn't work you need to check it. I like this movie, many good Miami scenes not too long after Vice and some good shots of the Anchor Hotel.Have you thought about doing Scarface? A movie classic with some reality mixed into the story. I believe it was one of the inspirations for Vice and includes some of the same actors.

I have fixed the link to page two thanks to you. As far as Scarface goes (the second Scarface, the remake with Pacino) It is on my short list of movies to get to shortly.

I have just learned the location of the Tropical Isle restaurant from the movie, Where The Boys Are. This was filmed at the Wreck Bar, inside the Yankee Clipper hotel on Ft. Lauderdale beach south of the Elbo Room. I have updated my location site with the details.Cool Charlie. What are the chances of bringing location trivia back? Location trivia is much more interesting to me than neon trivia even though I wasn't that great at IDing sites. I thought about testing the waters to see how much interest there would be but don't have that many original photos of Vice sites. Would you have time to upload a photo or two to help me keep it going?

Fantastic detail and work Charlie. Thanks for the acknowledgement. Glad to see S. Fla used by the movie industry. They should sign you to a big contract as the premier location scout. From what I hear, more and more TV shows and movies will be filmed there.

I don't know if this has already been mentioned, but I read that the remake of the Charlie's Angels TV series is being filmed in Miami.
