My plans for my Daytona replica

the other thing is I gotta wonder if maybe the key to getting the windshield to blend in with the body better is maybe to paint the frame along with the trim as they all seem to be a matt black, even with the gloss trimmed ones and thus it shows up from the side or rear if you look close.

with the interior I think the key to making any vette interior to look good is to mimic the early one's like the daytona's didEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildnamely look at the center console job there, that is like it used to be done in the original C3 corvette, this being a 68'Eingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildexcept that the leather goes all the way up the center console there and covers up all of the mechanical bits for the gauges there on the vice car, while the 68 just stops shortand to make sure if you use the carpet you dont thrown it around and put in areas where the entire thing should be covered in leather, like on these 81'sEingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildvs the way it was done on the 68 - 73 I believeEingefügtes Bildnote how much nicer the center console looks there with that leather trim treatment on the 68 vs how cut off it looks on the 81 as well, plus how with the 68 the trim under the dash was made to line up with the doors and probably used the same material, just like on the vice daytonaEingefügtes Bildwhere on the 81, it just looks mixed and matched and not very professional even on the TR they made sure that if they used carpet on the doors that everything below it and around it was carpet so it looked congruent http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7508&stc=1&d=1359531766

there is nothing else like it, it just works right, you dont know why but it just does, until you see one done up wrong.its like cool, your either cool or your not, you know if your worrying about it or thinking about it your just not doing it right and you can see through them like a laser like Mr Bieber there whos doing the marky mark thing from the 1990's nowI saw his face tonight when I was picking up some supplies at the CVS at the counter FYI, that's why that's fresh in my mind.

I will say this much though the carpet can be used if you want to create a color difference on purpose actually like here:http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7514&stc=1&d=1359880965actually Jurassic you could try and have someone trim up the leather to cover up the necessary areas to try and mimic the opening on the custom door panels of the vice car while using the carpet to create the proper color difference Eingefügtes Bildbut there its an exception because it has purpose, on that 76 it just looks slapped on with no forethought and is really at odds with the leatherwork and trim around it could push it down and further forward to create the look though, like move it to where the pocket is on this one and just as low and the have the leather trim put all around it save for the area the opening is supposed to be inEingefügtes Bildand by the way that light on the end does actually work, when the door is extended far enough it did come on, so it was a proper wired up light, not just a reflectorhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7515&stc=1&d=1359881124just like on the testarossa actually:http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7511&stc=1&d=1359531773So that was a ferrari approved touch I guess

The other thing I was thinking was what if you switched around the carpet color of the interior, like on that real one here:http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7516&stc=1&d=1359882765instead of the main carpet being black make it rust colored like the accents under the dash.like instead of the burlwood center console how about black piano venneer with black accents?you know sort of like how it is now with the vice car with the burlwood removedEingefügtes Bild but design it with that black veneer of a modern aston martin in mind at 3:15

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyGj9_zcNto

or maybe just leave the carpet all black and go for what Jurassic had hereEingefügtes Bildor even just go for what the vice car has nowhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5832&d=1335318476just with a gloss center console like that aston, actually the funny thing there is it also works that way as it seems like the momo and the center console have the same level of gloss, so they both reflect the same amount of light off of them.and thus it looks like it matches and it does, as they flow well together.just like the shifter on jurrasics herehttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7514&stc=1&d=1359880965the shifter and the handbrake there have the same shine to them, as there of the same gloss level and they look like they matchso that makes them look professional, that's kind of the secret to making a car look professional.make sure everything matches, go from top to bottom and make sure nothing sticks out or doesnt flow properly, its an act of trial and error. Then once it works you move on to the next part of the car.part of the reason why this kind of stuff is so expensive and why when someone slaps like 22 or 24 inch rims with a garish set of rims on an SUV that was never designed to have it it looks like hellEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildwhile on a production car it looks fine:

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rw1VavrJj-k

its because it was made to work with that, most SUV's have 16 to 18's so putting on a damn near 5 inch wider rim with low tires makes it look like a kids thingand that's what separates a professional job from a half assed job, the person takes there time to do it right, may take a few tries but they will eventually get it perfect.its just that perfection takes time.

the other thing is when I first saw the in the air tonight scene I honestly thought the spinners were gold not sort of the same amber as the turn signalsEingefügtes Bildnot unlike when I saw this shot of the dash and thought that it wasnt carpet under the left and the right sides of the dash but rather the remaining burlwoodEingefügtes Bildand the weird thing is at certain angles it seems like they disappear from far enough awayEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildso I gotta wonder by looking at the difference in reflection and dept from the amber next to the gold on the steering wheelhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5832&d=1335318476and the difference in look between the amber and gold, lighter amber/silver and gold and black spinnershttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7520&stc=1&d=1359884366http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7519&stc=1&d=1359884365http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7518&stc=1&d=1359884364http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7517&stc=1&d=1359884362Eingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildjust how would these spinners look on the car instead of the amber ones or lighter colored ambers everyone else goes for?http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-ZENITH-WHEEL-CORP-CALIFORNIA-GOLD-PLATED-EAGLE-METAL-CHIPS-Knockoffs-Wire-/251163146789?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7a7d7a25&vxp=mtrmaybe even just chromehttp://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-ZENITH-WHEEL-CORP-CALIFORNIA-CHROME-PLATED-EAGLE-METAL-CHIPS-Knockoffs-Wire-/251163163872?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7a7dbce0&vxp=mtr

Thought this was kind of interesting, some took the idea of painting the stock windshield trim satin black and actually did it on one of the daytona examples that is now currently posted on ebay:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Replica-Kit-Makes-Ferrari-Daytona-Spider-1969-Ferarri-Daytona-Roadster-Replica-350ci-V8-5-Speed-1969-/400441523101?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item5d3c2cbb9dhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7715&stc=1&d=1363934073http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7716&stc=1&d=1363934075plus they also blacked out the chrome ontop, it appears to be slightly gloss black though, wonder if it got powder coated?http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7718&stc=1&d=1363934192but they did block out ALL of it, the side tabs for the roof/sunvisiors included, which you can see these people did not do on these convertible conversions hereEingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildas nothing quite sticks out more than polished shiney chrome next to something that is matt in contrast in the sunlight, abit like polished black shoes being paired with a matt black suit, you know your eyes just jump to it because it doesnt quite mesh right once the light hits itjust imagine sonny wearing white gloss shoes instead of his mattish cloth ones with his white suit in out where the busses dont run and you can kind of get my drift about it.vs the stock corvette matt black:http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7717&stc=1&d=1363934076which can sometimes get a slight brown tint to it based on how the light hits it http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7719&stc=1&d=1363934852Also when it comes to gloss levels I believe it goes Matt, Satin, Semi Gloss then Gloss and I gotta say satin does look good and better than matt and gloss on it, although I think for the lighter colored cars you kinda have to go for the chrome trim with it as it just doesnt seem right to go with black or body colored trim atleast in full gloss like I've seen on alot of the brightly colored examples and also it doesnt appear to be the scammer at work again either, also note the momo prototypo steering wheel on the thing in the ad. hmm wonder who made it?then you have this one, the first replica I've seen with the other type of turn signal the daytona's came with on it, the half yellow/half white kindhttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Replica-Kit-Makes-Ferrari-Daytona-Spider-Ferrari-Daytona-Spider-Replica-/261184303054?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3ccfcc2fcethat the euro spec TR's had

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iaA3Q96WK0

and probably ditto with the ferrari daytona in the first placeand also I found some video of what the gold plated zenith wire wheel caps look like in person that I suggested to Brian awhile back:http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-ZENITH-WHEEL-CORP-CALIFORNIA-GOLD-PLATED-EAGLE-METAL-CHIPS-Knockoffs-Wire-/251163146789?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a7a7d7a25&vxp=mtrat 0:14

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKbYMnhvYUc

the videos a little rough around the edges but that's initially what I thought the amber ones looked like at first. Namely during the in the air tonight scene.vs how it looks in the daytime:Eingefügtes Bild(also note the turn signal doesnt have the prancing horse emblem in it in this scene either, which has been put back on the car since then)and the lighter more yellow ferrari replica caps that just say ferrari on them with the prancing horse instead of the zenith eaglehttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7719&stc=1&d=1363934852which are notably much more yellow, something more along the lines of the bright yellow and black ferrari horn emblem just with a silver horse and ferrari labeling below them instead of black.

Found out something, with the mirrors it looks like judging by the mirrors on this vette that the Tornado mirrors were in the same positioning as the ones on the stock vettehttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7950&stc=1&d=1368397323http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7948&stc=1&d=1368397299http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7947&stc=1&d=1368397287http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7949&stc=1&d=1368397311hell even the door lock seems to be in roughly the same position on the exterior, door handle and the lock are separate on the vette while there one piece on the daytona using alfa door handles. another parallel between the daytona's and the corvettes, another sign that Jurraisic is right and the cars are ment to be more a homage than a straight copy of the carsand also after looking at how the door panels look on the real one with that aluminum pattern on it in the gumball rally I just watched a week or so ago on my dvd player I can see whyI guess this also explains why I'm kind of curious to see how the moved around mirrors look like on Jurrasics car if he is fully redoing the doors, I keep thinking in the back of my mind that the car would look better of the mirrors were lowered to be inline with the door handle and maybe put a quarter of an inch back given that the door tops on the daytona are much thicker vs the stock corvette, and if it was moved around a little it could be fully behind the windshield like it seems to be on the stock C3, even though the base position seems to be roughly the same.mind you during the shows run the car was using bigger tornado steel mirrors, vs the babies it has now, maybe that was the reason why Carl or his brother switched them around after it left the show.in which the difference between the two is the steel one is roughly an inch wider and I think an inch taller.

Also I kind of have this in the back of my head that with the Stock daytona you had chrome next to chrome on the aft part of the car, the rear running lights:http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7951&stc=1&d=1368398437and that on the replica that was changed to have non chromed running lights on the aft quarters next to chrome:http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7952&stc=1&d=1368398449http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7954&stc=1&d=1368398478Brian's car by the way, one of the original photos I found of it before the auction in 06' before he owned it, I found it a few months ago, the internet ad for it and the lot number was still up weirdly on barret jackson I thinkand well with the replicas having the non chromed turn signals in the fronthttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7948&stc=1&d=1368397299 along with the non chrome mirror and no chrome vent windows wouldnt it be more logical and more in the continuity and the flow of the car to switch out the chrome tail light housings with the ones of the latter ferrari's?http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7955&stc=1&d=1368398495where the outside housing was either a matt black or a gloss black given the car seems to use matt or satin black alot above the blood groove on the side? (sorry its a knife term, dont know what you could call that in the car world)http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7953&stc=1&d=1368398465you know more or less outside of the tag light, ferrari labeling and the door handles (which are made chrome or a silver material on cars so you can see them reflect at night) keep everything in the theme of the replicas, I mean you can see on the 308 there that ferrari themselves probably changed the housing from chrome to black to line up with there own non chrome rear quarter panel running lights.along with keeping that grove thing on the side of the 308 there, just abit more subdued than it was on the daytona now that I think of it, never noticed that on the 308 before.so it is in keeping with the theme of the car as an 60's italian homage made in the 1980's with a few changes, plus this is actually not the first time I've come across a daytona replica with modded rear tail lightsEingefügtes BildEingefügtes Bildsource:http://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0045/index.htmlso evidently I'm not the first one to notice this, as I have seen matt housings as well on one or two of them, not sure if that was from oxidation or what though

I think this is also why with the chrome ontop of the windscreen that always kinda bugged me next to the matt black windshield trim, it seemed counter to the theme of the car and always seems to look better blacked out and matching it instead. http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7956&stc=1&d=1368399870http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7957&stc=1&d=1368399883http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7958&stc=1&d=1368399898http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7959&stc=1&d=1368399911http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7960&stc=1&d=1368399926basically to get it looking like this all the time regardless of the lighting levelshttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7961&stc=1&d=1368400483and not have the light catch the chrome and draw attention to the very visible split 3 piece chrome trim, seems like one piece or two piece trim you can get away with but three it's hard to hidehttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7962&stc=1&d=1368400497also thought this was worth noting but that yellow one has the chrome not sitting flush on the windshield like I've observed with other corvettes and on the show carhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7950&stc=1&d=1368397323http-~~-//www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7950&stc=1&d=136839732 3 at 0:38 and 1:36

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=4p4sno4MZ78

seems like for some reason instead of doing the mopar way and having the whole uper half of the windshield trim one piece where it mates in the middle, at a much stronger and stiffer point1:44 to 1:47

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zD7IKo05zM

they decided to split it up top and make the upper strip separate and I guess the top bit is kind of flimsy causing the warping, wonder if maybe someones done a higher quality reproduction that fixes that with the windshield trim, or if the trim could be glued or reinforced together at the top and split like the mopar one to fix thateither that or make a new upper piece that's thicker, stronger and fits in tighter

I've been having sort of a brain storm here, I'm starting to think that the only real difference wheels wise between this rowley and the vice car is that it uses 15 inch rims. The stock Rim size for the Corvette C3, vs the 14's on the vice car with tires ment for 15 inch rims. http://www.photos-automobiles.com/shootings/ferrari_daytonaspyder/index.htmEingefügtes Bildhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8089&stc=1&d=1371793717http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8088&stc=1&d=1371793715Eingefügtes BildI mean outside of some nice subtitle touches and little to minor changes (outside of the seats, flares and grill) it is pretty much rigged up like the vice car was on the show. The nice subtitle changes being that somehow someone got the inner windshield trim on without the studs in it, giving it kind of a really nice clean look.Eingefügtes BildEingefügtes BildNot sure if that means its glued in or what.and also that with that Blue Dino Metallic Example I have seen that carpet color done on one of the replicas beforehand, kindahttp://www.finecars.cc/en/detail/car/219553/index.html?no_cache=1&ret=63Eingefügtes Bildits just that they didnt trim the lower half of the footwell right where the leather meets the carpet in matching leather on that rowley, like they did on the Vice car. Kinda messing up the effect and making it look at odds with each other.http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5832&d=1335318476http://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0072/index.htmlEingefügtes Bildnamely by having a solid leather door sitting ontop of carpet then back to leather again, like it seems kind of disjointed and not that free flowing.http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8090&stc=1&d=1371794428actually take a look at the ferrari photo again, it looks like that's a detail ferrari themselves missed as well, seeing as the whole area around the leather door is a solid black panel that seems out of touch with the rest of the interior. The other thing I was thinking was that I noted for S2 that it seemed like it was overdone in black accents awhile back. I think that comes down to the aft area of the car, the space behind the seats.Eingefügtes Bildhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8091&stc=1&d=1371795409as while I cant imagine the area by the seats and the footwell being anything but blackhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5832&d=1335318476 the back however I cant help but think it would lighten up the car to maybe have that area done in either matching leather to the rest of the interior or a lighter contrast carpet with leather around it like on the Ferrari 250 Lusso, which means Luxury in Italian, or the Testarossa. the Car that replaced it in the show.http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8092&stc=1&d=1371795412http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8093&stc=1&d=1371795415maybe something like what was done with Sonny Burnett's car with the carpet colorhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8094&stc=1&d=1371795581although maybe separated by a strip of leather that goes behind the seats, kinda basically covering this lipped area on this earlier 1976 corvette based daytona replica in matching leatherhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8095&stc=1&d=1371795927Kind of almost exactly like the treatment ferrari did with the TR back therehttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8093&stc=1&d=1371795415plus using that kind of tonau cover used on that replica that goes all the way down to the bottom of the floor also made in matching leather would make it seems like its all one piece leather with it hanging down into the cabinand then leaving the working area where the battery/ speakers are now on the vice car carpet but a matching carpet to the leather, or just a lighter contrast to lighten it up back there, maybe even using those rust colored carpets on the dash that matched up with the burlwood center console back in the dayEingefügtes Bild

it would give it a sense of symmetry and color theme as well. Next I was thinking that it seems like the Key with getting the tires to work is to make sure you get the right balance of tire height to rim height and sizetake for example this one, with wider than the vice car tires (245/40/17's vs the vice cars 235/60 R15's sitting on 14 inchers) sitting on 17 inch rimshttp://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0058/index.htmlhttp://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0058/!BPQbfZQB2k~$%28KGrHgoOKiMEjlLmVOYOBJytWdggC!~~_3. jpgEingefügtes Bildit seems to work, and I think that's because the tires are thin enough so that they dont seem to take up so much room, like if you wanted with the 15 inch rims of that rowley you could probably put 235's on the front and 255's on the rear as long as you kept the tire height size percentage down. so it didnt seem to bolster out of the sides of the car.while keeping the wider tread pattern, not unlike on a fast modern car like this aston martin

Also I gotta admit I prefer the rowley/ferrari style handbrake to the stock corvette oneEingefügtes Bild but it seems like you loose an arm rest by going with that style of handbrake, maybe some sort of handbrake boot I believe its called around the very edge where the slots are http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8097&stc=1&d=1371799272similar to this http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8096&stc=1&d=1371799269but not as protruding over the handbrake and its grabhandle would get a good inbetween of both worlds, as it was noted if you drive a manual vette you do kind of get tired of holding your hand there and want to rest it on the arm rest.as that was one of the noted things many corvette guys added to the earlier cars, an aftermarket pad there to rest there arm while driving.Aftermarket padded restEingefügtes Bildwhat it looks like without itEingefügtes Bildhttp://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/1979/1979c/index.htmlmaybe just have the handbrake housing cut down a little in the front to make space for the boot around it and have that part of the leather that was cut off be part of the rest of the center console.kind of get a best of both worlds dealalso looking at this replica, is it missing an interior trim piece for the door hinge to cover up the paint work from the interior?Eingefügtes Bildvs the one with the fiero seats in ithttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8095&stc=1&d=1371795927while Sonny's Car has it, although it looks like it still retains the clip for the convertible cover on it, that kind of looks like it needs to go further up with the new body on it. http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8094&stc=1&d=1371795581the Final thing I was thinking of was I gotta wonder if the mirrors of this Lotus Esprit here would work on the vice car

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=3otgkscxoAs

something about it and how far they stick out seems like they would be an ideal match for the overly flat but sleak body of the carEingefügtes Bildand its wide hood as cars with the Tornado Mirrors while not quite as Sleak looking on it just look inherently right http://www.miamiviceonline.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=8098&stc=1&d=1371800428Eingefügtes Bildyet also kinda at odds with the car at certain anglesEingefügtes Bildas they add an accent to the car that is needed, but they dont seem organicSo with the lotus ones I cant help but think that might be the ticket, although looking at this countach with the Painted tornado mirrors

http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=fM0hr5a6GIM

maybe the key to making it look organic may be to simply lower and push back the mirrors to be in line more with the door handles, like that countach needs with those mirrors on it yet also have them painted to match the body.

  • 11 months later...

Now for the past while I've been doing some research into the motors and the suspension of Corvette's along with the power to weight ratio, and I found out some interesting things

prompted by this, as I was looking for the Tire sizes of the countach to compaire to the daytona, and it gave me abit more than I barganed for really:

http://www.autozine.org/Archive/Lamborghini/classic/Countach.html

check the specifications at the bottom, Est Top Speed, Top speed as tested, HP, torque figures, weight and everything you an think of really

and the figures support something Jay Leno had said about his car, the things really a brick, hence the figures.

as the original daytona with its 4 camshafted engine, 350 some horsepower, real horsepower at about 6,600 RPM and 318 Foot Pounds of torque was 30 MPH faster despite weighing just as much as the countach and being just as powerful

hell it wasnt until the last model there that it could even match a real daytona from the sound of it.

now what does all of that have to do with anything, horsepower divided by weight equals the power to weight ratio of the car, and these are the figures I came up with

270 divided by 3350 = 0.08  hp/lb Corvette C3 350220 divided by 3200 = 0.068 hp/lb Corvette C3 350220 divided by 1350 = 0.162 hp/lb Lotus Elan 26R160 divided by 1516 = 0.105 hp/lp Lotus Elan stock330 divided by 3200 = 0.103 hp/lb130 divided by 2712 = 0.047 hp/lp Delorean 85 divided by 2312 = 0.036 hp/lp Plymouth Reliant353 divided by 2976 = 0.118 hp/lp LP400 S Countach (apparent Real Hp) 1979 - 1982375 divided by 3262 = 0.114 hp/lp LP500 S Countach352 divided by 3527 = 0.099 hp/lp Daytona

also the Lotus Elan there is based off of the figures given by Jay leno about his super elan that he made

now the other thing was the mention on the sister page there about the daytona and its HP and Torque Figures

It redlined at an incredible 7700 rpm, producing a genuine 352 horsepower and 318 lbft of torque

http://www.autozine.org/Archive/Ferrari/classic/Daytona.html

so adjusting for about the power the L82 V8 made at its peak in 1973, right before the Opec Oil Embargo, I think an L82 could come up with a respective power of this270 HP, 236 FT pounds

and the more I looked into it, it seems almost like you could rig the motors up tier wise

The standard 350, L48 which made a respectable 200 HP and 270 foot pounds in 1973, although it probably lost alof of that torque due to the torque converters of the time. and it was detuned down to about 170 to 150 HP between 1974 and 1975, due to the opec oil crysis, also this was after being detuned in 1971 to run on low lead gas.

the L82, 250 HP, detuned to 200, in 1975, and brought up to 220 in the late 1970's due to the modernization of the exhaust and tuning, as apparently I've heard you can get an average of about 10 to 20 more HP out of the car based on just how the exhaust is rigged up.

hence why in some cases the L82's can feel underpowered to the L48's if the car is pre 1975, if it is 1975 though, this is how the car seems

rather disapointing

also a note to remember about Horsepower in respect to the top end of the car, Tiff Needell the race car driver once mentioned or found out from someone in order to drive about 5 to 10 mph faster in a car you need about 30 percent more power

and that would come out to about 60 more HP for the 200 HP corvette, hence my figure there

also I must wonder if when the Daytona was overhauled for season 2, that they overhauled the motor to L82 spec or above considering the weight of the camera equipment that was frequently hanging off the car.

in addition to the valve cover breathers.

plus the car in general seemed to be faster than it did in S1, namely from the way the Home Invaders chase looked vs the action in Florience Italy.

where just in general the car did seem faster.

Now going above that you reach sort of the modern engines from the C4, the stock 350 and above, although its interesting to note that the LT1 engine, that seems a tier above those two

and actually was capable of launching the C4 Corvette to the projected and targeted 150 MPH of the C4 project in 1984

and that is about a 300 HP motor, and 330 Foot Pounds of torque, Big Block 454 Power, out of a small block in 1990, only 15 some years latter

and it has been fitted to atleast one daytona replica that I know of

http://corvette.canney.net/webvettes/customized/c0050/index.html

and I know of 2 other daytona's with C4 motors in them, one used in the rowley corvette test for kit car magazine where it was supposedly able to keep up with the testarossa's and the countach's on track, although i dont know how true that is and youngmans car.

and seems like that would be pretty much the top end of power that you would ever want out of a Small Block motor, although it is worth noting that small block V8's like this are usually limited to 6,000 RPM

based on the Camshaft of the motor, while the only other motor that didnt do that was the ZR1' of 1993 with its 4 camshaft motor.

but even then the modern ZR1 and the LT1 are not using overhead camshafts to produce the power figures that they do and are instead using superchargers to produce that kind of power.

basically the stock 350 taken to the Nth Degree, while the ZR1 LT5 had the same amount of camshafts and power as the daytona's motor

and took it up to roughly the same speeds and RPM.

which kinda makes the future obivious for GM, if they are to compete in the modern world, they need to start making reliable overhead cam motors otherwise their at their wits end motor wise with how much gas the motors can use, although the northstar series has been less than stellar.

also its worth noting as to why GM didnt make motors like this back then with the 6.2 Liter supercharger motor both used in the ZR1 and the LT1, it was company policy not to put the gas guzzler tax to the customer, hence the seemingly low HP ratings back then till through technology, gearing and transmission work they were able to provide that power without it being a serious gas guzzler.

hence the Muncie 4+3 transmisions that were slow but fuel efficent of the first gen c4's

also someone actually put said 6.2 Liter of the ZR1 in a 1971 Corvette

although if you wanted the best of all worlds, the LS4 of the Corvette C5 with a 18/27 MPG rating with an 18 gallon tank in 2001 would be the real performer at 350 HP and 360 foot pounds of torque.

with 320 miles on a gallon of fuel City wise roughly

plus that follows the 5 year rule with a new motor for all of the kinks to be worked out and there was some sort of pistol slap problem with the early LS's as they were using alumiumn pistons that needed to warm up to fill the cylinders

and all this begs the quesiton, what the hell could the engineers do if the management got told to get stuffed with their penny pinching ways that have been always contrary to good business sense.

where if you make a good product people will pay the preiumn to get a great trustworthy product, its what gave mercedes life after the war after all and made them legendary quality wise

till they merged with Chrysler. but even then that's not to say they were infalable

but recent trends with GM have been quite worrying, such as them penny pinching the hell out of the C7 project and styling it like a knock off of a seven year old ferrari 458

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/Ferrari_458_Spider.jpg/1024px-Ferrari_458_Spider.jpg

that has only just been restyled to look great again

shows up at 0:35

and gm always seems to be behind the tide by about a minimal of 6 years with alot of their stuff, including interior quality, hell the 2010 Chevy Malibu has the interior of one of their cars from the 1990's for christ sakes

and they wanted 15 grand for a 2 year old car with 30 K in 2012 that looked like a pigs breakfast in white, no way in hell.

and a brand new impala with that ugly cloth interior that even in the 1990's wouldnt sell, they wanted 30 G for it.

hell I almost guarantee you that the objective of the C7 was lets make this thing look as 458 like as possible, while the C4's was lets modernize this thing and get it to do a 150 mph on the stock engine.

then the viper was announced in 1988, then it was lets make a car that is better than the viper in all respects with the ZR1

nowadays frankly outside of the ZR1 of 09 and the LT1 Camaro I dont know what they're thinking, and if they dont get it through there heads that they need to start looking ahead and not copying people like their doing

and just make quality products with good customer service, their gonna disapear in 20 years, just like pontiac and olds.

I mean hell if you want the picture perfect image of the difference between a good company and a bad one, Porsche has a few problems with a select number of GT3 engines with engine fires, like maybe 5 or 10, they recall the full line for free replacement engines.

GM, they wait until they get sued and brought infront of court, and that problem they had with the engines shutting off, its not the first time that's happend

it happened to my dad in 2002 with a 99 intrigue, 2 weeks after he bought it.

make good products and people will come and buy them, make bad ones and they'll never come back

unless the company is now run by a new head who knows what they're doing and wont make the same mistakes and GM keeps making the same mistakes like they did back then, 13 years latter.

  • 2 weeks later...

also reading up on suspensions, the chasis and its handling it seems that theres a simple way to catagorize them by type

A Sports Car is as described by classic and sports car mag with the Toyota 2000 GT vs the E Type and the 1960's C2 Corvette Comparison of the second to last latest issue

is a car that has no understeer and very little body roll but a stiff chasis

such as the miata:

when its stiffed up and tightened up for off road use on a track

Grand Turismo is a car with Neutral understeer and a maybe softer chasis, think like a Jaguar F type or I dare say it a boring modern aston Martin, of which I havent seen in british racing green since 2002, when prodrive took over after ford sold it

Muscle car: a car which is a sedan with alot of power, can have lots of understeer and oversteer: Typical instance in america is a car with Polyglass tires, pre radials, which can result in a ride that feels like jelly with worn out or soft suspension parts on a ladder chasis with little to no bracing on its ladder chasis

leading to an excessive amount of play in the chasis, which translates to the body as body roll on an already heavy car, which can be seen in cars even back in the day when they were new like the 1970 Dodge Challenger

vs a more expensive model with much more chasis bracing and torsion barts to connect it on either side of the chasis I believe

and the way to go from a muscle car like handling to sports car or grand turismo is to stiffen the chasis with such things as this:

http://vetteworksonline.net/6873%20harness%20bar.htm

which honestly I looked up after watching the miata video to see if anything would be avalable for the old C3, and honestly its just kind of a bonus as it would make it look more like the Vice City Stories Stinger than the Vice City one.

Eingefügtes Bild

Eingefügtes Bild

and to remove the play and add some precision to the rear suspension, such as what was done to this mustang:

which I swear sounds like a dead ringer to the upgrades done to Sonny Burnett's car the more I thought about it with the rear suspension

however in doing that kind of stuff you probably loose some of the rawness with stiffening up the chasis like on this C2, that blows a C6 out of the water when it comes to the Soul of the car, and part of that comes from having the chasis rock back and forth when reving the motor

so its a matter of getting what you want out of it, and even with the Big Block 454 7 1/2 liter motor the C3 was still better and easier to drive with the bigger motor than the Shelby cobra with a 427, so its really just a matter of subjectiveness and what you want out of a car.

and C3's outsold cobras 3 to 1 back in the day just because of that, after all the cobra was kind of a freak of nature, the Corvette however had been a development of the C1 to C3

and had all of the basics an american needs, a Cobra, it was fast but aerodynamically limited to 160 and hard to drive, and seemed like a hill climb car taken to an extreme.

hell I think even the Lotus 7 Had more amenities than it

a superheros car basically, something a kid would love because its bigger than life just like a wrestler like Hulk Hogan, Machoman Randy savage or the late Ultimate Warrior

hence why its been an enduring icon, just like superman and batman really, but unless you know what your doing and are mature and not a fool with it, you really dont want to drive it with your mind turned off like a regular car.

and I dont think you could really relax with a cobra under you lol
