Although it's no real location, this ship, the "Scandinavian Sun" was also to see in different closing montage versions and is also visible in the background of a scene in "El Viejo" (here to see), perhaps also in other episodes where I didn't notice.

"Scandinavian Sun" was only one of her names. Ordered under the name "Freeport" in 1967 she was built by "Lübecker Maschinenbau Gesellschaft" in Luebeck, Germany and had this name until 1968 when it was changed to "Freeport I". Later it was "Freeport" again, until 1974. Then it was "Svea Star" ('74 - '81). In 1981 she got the name "Scandinavian Sun" under which she's seen in MV. She had this name until 1992 when she became "Balanga Queen". 1994 she got her last name "Discovery Sun" which was valid until she got scrapped in 2012 in Bangladesh.

Here are a pictures with her different names and liveries.

She often operated between Miami and Freeport (hence the first name) and on 20 August 1984 a fire broke while docking at Port of Miami which caused two deaths and 57 injuries.

Greetings,

Andreas

It's a Hobie 16 catamaran with a trapeze, flying the starboard hull... and it's somewhere in Miami.  On to the next mystery!  Just kidding.  LOL!  Sorry I can't help with the location, but all the other stuff is accurate.  I've sailed one before, including flying the hull on the trapeze.  A college friend's father had one in the 90's.  It's what I learned to sail on.  Those things move!

Thankyou great information - and it’s cool we know the location.

From “Home Invaders” end credits - a nice slight variation of what we have seen in the Pilot, Smugglers Blues and other end credit montages. Bal Harbour starting from the curve on Collins just past 96th street looking north where Surfside meets Bal Harbour.

We see this clip during the closing credits of "Redemption In Blood".  I believe that's the only time it's used.  I am baffled by this location.  Two beaches at right angles to each other?  Maybe not Florida?

That is Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. I have walked that several times 20 years ago and the sign in the water marks a shoal and drop off. The wooden post use to be there as well.

A very nice 1977 shot of Dodge Island and Port of Miami above Biscayne Bvld looking to the beaches, Port bridge and the MacArthur Cswy (a very similar shot and angle we see from the end of Opening Credit Sequence and Season 1s “Great Mccarthy”)

1977 shot of Dodge Island, Port of Miami and the Downtown skyline as it was then. We see a similar angle and shot circa this time in the closing credit montages at times.

From Historic Miami today on Facebook ~ looking north over the Rickenbacker Causeway to Downtown (1984).
We see views similar to this in a few variations of this shot in many closing montages including the Pilot shot looking the opposite way from the Causeway to Brickell and Mercy Hospital.

After @airtommy mentioned here that @C Glide never got around to studying the closing montages, I thought I’d try and fill that gap, at least up to the episode of the show I’ve watched so far, which is Bushido. The locations are all pretty much known, so I did something else.

I put everything into an Excel table, covering 30 episodes, which essentially looks like this.

Screenshot2023-07-05131506.thumb.png.7929696af2e19ec6ead30c3cf4466f67.png

Where for each new episode I just fill out the numbers opposite the shots used. For example, if the first shot in the montage was the flamingo bustle, I put ‘1’ there. After the montage is over, those which didn’t participate just get an N/A value.

What it then lets me do is sort for any episode in a click and see exactly which shots in what order were used, for example for Glades the first few:

Screenshot2023-07-05131711.png.1f04728edfae5c7da9aaba898ba7196d.png

The rightmost part of the table automatically accumulates montage shots statistics:

Screenshot2023-07-05132031.png.f4facb02a5af56cd727eea32e92eceea.png

And the bottom of the table automatically accumulates episode statistics:

Screenshot2023-07-05132142.thumb.png.c65f1dfbc906e4b65b03756c998a585d.png

Finally, there is a small section that automatically updates with record numbers:

Screenshot2023-07-05132217.png.7acd1358a26e48e3358d7f03a82f62bb.png

It is also easy to quickly see other things like in which episode any particular shot was seen for the first time.

When I finish this table for the whole show, I will convert it into Google Sheets and share an online link. Given the rate at which I watch the show and the effort the table does take, it won’t be happening any time soon, so I wanted to share this now anyway.

First, here are all the shots in the order they first appear in closing montages, left to right and top to bottom. Sorry but I haven’t been able yet to catch clean shots of all of them – some have the credits text overlay…

Screenshot2023-07-05165403.thumb.png.7a6870a7f2259ad0e895d7fae0b56b02.png

Screenshot2023-07-05165428.thumb.png.0035e4902385c39f779a19299ffaa92b.png

Now the fun part, some observations!

Heart of Darkness and Calderone’s Return II do not include closing montages.

The largest number of montage shots (so far) was in Golden Triangle I – 21.

The most common shot is the water skier. He appears 23 times across the 30 episodes. Runners-up are a Bal Harbor shot and a Flamingo Bustle.

Screenshot2023-07-05170311.png.67b1e7285ee86e27b4be9d1a72c731b7.png

The man also dominates the last shot position, with the Bal Harbor pan also coming second. Interestingly the cruise ships while taking the 3rd place only showed 4 times so far generally, so they really like to go for the last.

Screenshot2023-07-05170848.png.691b5b973a2cf8a76e8b585237627488.png

Flamingos are the most popular to kick off the montage, with the water skier coming second and the Palace Condominiums 3rd.

Screenshot2023-07-05171048.png.52bb1c7a7aee36bec980816e79b0e7f0.png

We have 3 triples of sports shots.

Screenshot2023-07-05172010.png.2f91cd11d24c8247f15309b3d7bd7db1.png

Screenshot2023-07-05172030.png.509956a6b4887bf8264b95ffc78ddae9.png

Screenshot2023-07-05172134.png.9179f021d6fb7227207bc4f7287e20fe.png

Horse and dog racing are introduced with all 3 shots at the same time, and at first keep showing up as all 3 in the same order. After a while the 3 start being used independently. However, jai alai never has any order and shows up randomly from the beginning.

The wind surfer often immediately follows the sail boat – I guess makes sense.

14.png.a2846e0a51ac18988b4cf4becc90fbfc.png

4.png.d2fdc371a9d0709598f356058a9e317e.png

They could actually also make a sailing sports triplet with the catamaran!

34.png.afad4bd37c15e3a2fceb45a48151d997.png

After the pilot episode, the seaplane didn’t show up again until the first episode of the second season.

3.png.35dad057eede05eb6c7b813e5e953b6c.png

Some other things I noticed.

Glades is a special episode because its closing montage has an extra last screen – referencing copyright of the Deputy Daw cartoon the crew is watching in their hideout in the beginning of the episode.

Golden Triangle I is a special episode in that the closing montage contains a lot of shots without text overlay so you can just enjoy the views. Just like it was in the pilot episode. So to me Golden Triangle I has a weird spirit of a visual reset.

Junk Love is a special episode because its closing montage only has one shot! That of Bal Harbor lateral flight. Which leads me to the next point that the same shot is of course not always (or even not ever) identical in length every time it shows up. Bal Harbor shot specifically varies widely in duration and which segment of the flight is used.

Finally, no two montages are the same! There are two couples that are close, but still not the same. Give a Little, Take a Little and Nobody Lives forever hold the record (outside of Junk Love) for the smallest number of shots – 5. And those 5 are almost all the same in the same order:

Screenshot2023-07-05173049.png.b55dda0ae88026c62523d3c086ee7576.png

What is in a sense even a closer match are Whatever Works and Out Where the Buses Don’t Run. Both have 12 shots, 10 of which match. And the two that don’t are similar anyway - one pair is different jai alai shots, another Bal Harbor and Brickell bird’s eye views:

Screenshot2023-07-05175511.thumb.png.d3bc296f7e874d33c541c6876f3c147a.png

That’s it for now folks! I hope you liked this analysis. And tell me which is your favorite closing montage shot. Mine is the pool, and it sucks that Palmeras Beach Club is now permanently closed awaiting its demolition, so I’ll never get to see that pool in person. There are many other shots I like especially, for example, the fist jai alai, seaplane, wind surfer, bikini girls, and the festival shot of a lady with the fruit hat.

Incredible work!  Thanks for the detailed analysis and I can’t wait for more.  I would venture to say that you are the world’s leading expert on Miami Vice closing montages.

Just to add a totally irrelevant observation of mine, of all the images you have shown that were used, there’s only a couple I can’t recall seeing in all my viewings.  Those are the convertible car at night and the skyscraper with a crane.  It think they are numbers 15 and 28 of the 37 you show.  All the rest seem very familiar.

Well maybe not surprising, because at least out of these 30 episodes, they only show up once each. 15 a lady in convertible in the pilot, and 28 Intercontinental hotel in Little Prince.

Great shot, and comments on exact location, thank you. From this angle we should be able to spot the Atlantis condominium, between the 2nd and 3rd building from the left but it is not there. This suggests the picture was taken in or before 1980 as construction period was 1980- 1982 .

This was on the Florida Memories Facebook page and we see this shot of Hobie Island Beach Park off the Rickenbacker Cswy enroute to Key Biscayne in several of the closing credit montages.  The photo was taken in 1984.

I wonder why they call it Hobie Island Beach Park. :p  Seriously, it brings back memories.  I learned to sail on a Hobie 16 with a buddy in college in the early 90’s.  His father bought it used and we fixed it up.  After an injury ended my basketball playing days in college, sailing became my new love.

We would tow the Hobie cat with his old VW diesel Dasher up and down the coast and launch from beaches.  We went as far north as Santa Barbara where there’s a beach called Leadbetters and people have them stored right on the sand, and all the way down to Baja California Sur where we launched in the Sea of Cortez at spot called Bahía Concepcion.

We would sleep in the Dasher, sail when the wind was good, and explore the area the rest of the time.  It’s how I decided to move to Long Beach, after a couple sailing trips there.  My girlfriend, now wife, and I rented our first apartment and we could see the beach where they still launch cats.  I have a Columbia 28 sloop in the marina where I live today.  Good times then!  Thanks for bringing back the memories.
