I was just wondering how come they sometimes used stock footage like this one? I’m in Marina del Rey currently in Los Angeles and this area hasn’t changed much at all. This was known as stock footage and post production for Miami Vice was done in LA so they sometimes slotted LA locations in - we saw it a number times in the show’s run in the five seasons. These shots were used in other shows as well around that time. The most LA locations used for any Miami Vice episode was Season 4s “Rock and a Hard Place” mainly as this was based in LA but filmed in Miami. I do recall other stock footage like the liquor store in LA used in "Give a little Take a little," I believe. I would have preferred original film, but I understand that it can be useful in saving time and money in the production.

Yes it’s a bit lazy at times - however it could also be added to fill out an episode for running times etc and this would have been done in LA during post production
Matt5
We discussed the Wilshire Bvld shot from the Park Westwood Tower on Hilgard in Westwood/Beverly Hills from “Shadow in the Dark”. This building the Crown Towers at 10701 Wilshire / Manning Ave was seen in that shot a uite prominently. The Sterling Wilshire at 10717 Wilshire (in front) was also seen. I took these on Monday morning in Los Angeles. Edited February 9, 2018 by Matt5
Matt5
Another angle of the two buildings (10701 and 10717 Wilshire) we see prominently in the “Shadow in the Dark” LA establishing shot. I took this on Wilshire Bvld between Selby & Manning Ave’s, Los Angeles
Dadrian
I watched that episode last night. I definitely recognize that building.

Matt5
From Season 1s “Glades” teaser - where the police van passes on E5th heading west. This shot was taken this afternoon in Downtown Los Angeles.
Matt5
And the shot previous in the teaser on E5th Street, Downtown LA looking away from Wall Street Edited March 19, 2018 by Matt5
Matt5
We also see a number of buildings on North Western Avenue in Hollywood during the teaser of “Glades” most of which I visited a number of years ago. However one location at 1191 N. Western looking to 1187 N.Western in Hollywood, off Santa Monica Bvld - was discovered by daytona365 @daytona365 and not discovered until quite recently. I visited this afternoon and got the shot seen in the teaser. Edited March 19, 2018 by Matt5
C Glide
Great job great re-creation shots. LA looking even worse now than in the 70s.

In this particular area yes, just outside Downtown (homeless ghetto) think Overtown Miami but worse - not an area you want to hang around long in Edited March 20, 2018 by Matt5
Matt5
Season 5s “To Have and To Hold” aka Second Chance had an establishing shot of Ago Restaurant (‘Silvios’) at 8478 Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood in this episode. When I visited last month the hedging had been cut down so appeared more like we saw in 1989. This is the angle we see in the episode actually taken at the Clinton/Melrose intersection Edited March 20, 2018 by Matt5
Matt5
NEW LOCATION FOUND- The sleazy looking hotel from the teaser of Season 5s “Too Much, Too Late” was the Baltimore Hotel on 501 Los Angeles Street/ E5th in Downtown. A couple of blocks from where airtommy and I originally looked at - the only way you were going to confirm this location was on the ground in person which I did- the Key was the inner stairwell. The positioned fire connection pump outside the entrance confirms this as well as window features- completely unchanged. This is the exact shot we see in the episode . Matt5
Here’s a couple of night shots from the same location seen in the teaser of “Too Much, Too Late” at Los Angeles St/E5th in Downtown LA from last week. Exactly as seen in the 1989 episode but 29 years later! ...Can’t you hear that “In the Night” song playing from the teaser. Matt5
The hotel I found during the opening credits of “Too Much Too Late”, 501 Los Angeles St on Skid row in Downtown LA (formerly Baltimore Hotel) the building was also seen in 1987s “Spy in the House of Love” video by funk band Was Not Was. Matt5
A current day shot from Elysian Park drive from Elysian Park in Downtown LA which we saw in the teaser of 1987s “ Rock and a Hard Place “. Not quite how we saw it in MV as to the left is Dodger Stadium which we did not see in MV. (shame as beautiful with the stadium in). I am in the Los Angeles area but along the coast so will venture into DtLa and get some shots soon.
