Location resources

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread for sites which help us in our location searching. Until now, we have been posting them within other threads which makes them harder to find when you want to go back to them. Sometimes our location hunting takes a turn and suddenly you're reminded of something you saw a while ago ... but where was it??To start off this thread, I'm posting a few of my favourites:My most popular has to be (because you can turn around the birds eye view): www.bing.com/maps/Then there is CGlide's excellent site for info, screen caps and more:http://www.sffl.comcastbiz.net/Aerial maps:http://www.historicaerials.com/aerials.php?op=homeSunny Isles info:http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=FmVY06yha8gC&pg=PA50&lpg=PA50&dq=motels+%2B+giller&source=bl&ots=AhbFq3OWeQ&sig=R5QLA7GlV7bH7G1VXIP8k4sU7jA&hl=en&sa=X&ei=nIrvTsedGcnr8QO1vqSdCg&sqi=2&ved=0CIYBEOgBMAU#v=onepage&q=motels%20%20%20giller&f=falseOld miami pics (check out the rest of the years):http://www.pbase.com/donboyd/memories_1970to1999Card cow (constantly updated so you may get lucky finding an elusive hotel!)http://www.cardcow.com/search4.php?section=all&in_category=66493&substring=floridaHistoric Bayfront:http://www.bayfrontparkmiami.com/pages/history/historyphotos.htmlMore sites:http://www.miami-florida.com/historical-photos.htmhttp://web.miamibeachfl.gov/cityclerk/historic_gallery/historicphotogallery.aspxAnd finally the one I posted yesterday:http://good-times.webshots.com/album/555600060xhDoGrI have more favourites on my other PCs which I will post on here later. Please join in so we can build up our own library of sites.

You never know where source locations can come from. The first clue (I think) on the Bravo Gym location was a comment I found on youtube.com where someone saw a video clip and commented that he remembered it being in Allapattah across from Jackson Sr high.

That's true' date=' Sonny-Burnett - clues can come from anywhere & it is great when they suddenly arrive. And what a wonderful feeling when you track down the exact location!I thought that by putting together the main sites where old pics/info are mentioned, they're easy to find in one place on here for us location detectives. When we were looking for the (until recently elusive) "Ramrod" hotel, it ended up as a group find - different members were putting bits of found info into the "pot". I ran with a piece of info which had come from Pink Flaming0 then someone went further with what I'd found ... eventually when the location was pinpointed by another member, I came across an old picture of the Ramrod's street and in the distance there was the hotel. The old picture site I went through that day is now on this list. Sometimes those old photos and postcards hold little hints which aren't obvious until much later on.There used to be a great site which listed each of the Miami historic buildings in great detail but it seems to have disappeared into the ether, however below is a smaller list I've found:[u']Wiki Historic Buildings Miamihttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Miami-Dade_County,_FloridaJim, will be looking at your site recommendations tonight

Matt, this thread is for resources. The Sunny Isles hotel is dealt with under the general location sleuthing thread (and no, it hasn't been found as nobody has been there to check it out)

Thanks Caroline - where has the thread gone with all info of current searching locations such as pilot beach scene :D

Its right here Matt. http://www.miamiviceonline.com/showthread.php?15225-Calling-all-Detectives-Group-effort I should probably make it a sticky since it is hard to find if no one posts on it in a while.

Good link Sue. Here's one I use, not only for researching locations but for current photos and news. You have to cursor around and look at various threads such as "Miami's Often Forgotten High-Rise History." Check the "Halloween South Beach 2009" thread. I hear it has gotten crazier lately. http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=513

If you haven't run into this yet, it's a great blog for art deco and Miami fans that will send you a post every day with photos of classic Miami and Miami Beach photos.  Today's shows photos of the Senator, Tudor (no longer exists), and Tiffany Hotels.  Like the Essex House they were/ are all corner properties with a distinctive spire on top.

Since forum updates have messed up the formatting of posts in this thread, I'm relisting the main resources here:

An indispensable resource for finding theater related locations is this one: http://cinematreasures.org/

I found or confirmed at least three unknown MV locations with it. It offers a preselection of theaters by city and district (you can for example select all movie theaters in Coconut Grove or Miami Downtown that are closed now or have been demolished completely) and lists also long gone theaters of all kind, including drive in theaters and gives next to address, size, number of seats, number of screens and year of operation or closure also often pictures and additional intel from people who were there.

An amazing collection of old Miami photos can be found here: https://hu.pinterest.com/avidal9863/_saved/

13.000(!) old and mostly very rare pictures of Greater Miami saved by a Hungarian guy, sorted by city, area and street (e.g. Miami Beach, Washington Ave, 1-2nd Street, 3-4 street, and so on) as well as by type (e.g. hotels, schools, theaters, ...). It took me hours just to get an overview....

This week I ran a number of the unknown locations through https://tineye.com/ , especially the ones we suspected were Los Angeles stock footage.  I had two successes: the Ramirez house in "Give a Little Take a Little" and the Menton condo in "Golden Triangle II".  For both of these clips, there is a brief flash at the end that shows a wider view which made it easy to find the locations.

Wow that is a great application that I‘ve always looked for. Thanks! There are plenty of other locations (establishing shots) that we can run through there.

This is a great location search site for filmmakers, location scouts and producers for all of the US, including the Greater Miami area (1114 location results, it takes days to see them all, please click through 56(!) pages within Miami search results by changing pages on the lower left end of the screen). I have used it a lot, but forgot to post it here as reference.

There are many locations that are not easy accessible for pictures like courts and airports. Also Opa Locka West airport is there and other VICE locations where we had no pictures. I posted a lot of them in the last few months in the respective episode threads of the location section.
