A rare priceless picture of Bayside Marina, Marketplace and Reflections on the bay, as seen in the last scene in Freefall, Hostile takeover and other. Picture taken in 1989.

Miami Vice made good use again of the Deering Estate in Cutler Bay in this episode.

I took these photos in late June just after the Summer Solstice  -both from the teaser, the room used in the teaser is on the ground floor in the stone house opposite the ballroom (“Cuba Libre”, “Bushido”, “Freefall”).

Stay safe everyone the west coast has been badly hit with torrential rain\ flooding and wind speeds like I’ve not seen. Naples Pier is half gone I read. So much destruction in Ian’s path.

A few weeks ago I posted some up to date comparison shots from this year to the teaser stairwell and ground floor room used in this episode from the Deering Estate in Cutler.

Last Thursday I was in South Miami and went to the Deering Estate again. The photos  below are the second room used in this episode in the Stone House when Ian McShane’s Borbon shot dead his finance minister. The room at the back of the house overlooks the Deering basin we see in “Afternoon Plane” and “Bushido” which you can clearly see behind Borbon.

A good picture of the Rickenbacker Causeway Bridge underpass. Also used in Walk-alone. The underpass is currently closed to the public (tried in summer to get there, but access is blocked).

Today, thanks to courtesy of a friend, I have a special gem: some filming days of the last episode, including the very last day. As we all know Freefall was shot 3-27 April 1989. They planned 18 days, but turned out 19 1/2 at the end.

SPOILER: the only unknown location left (Highsmith villa interior) is unfortunately NOT on these few sheets I have.

As the 4 daily sheets and the advance information for days following included show, they started filming 2 days at Matheson Hammock Park (see map where I show the addresses and the sheet and where the corresponding scenes have been filmed). No new locations here, we all knew that. They had two parking meets/addresses given for the first day.

On the third day, they filmed the short scene with Baker, Johnny and Highsmith at Dodge Island, before they moved to film the boat scenes returning from COsta Morada off Key Biscayne.

On April 11, they filmed the shooting in the Cartel Hideaway where Tubbs was kept (interior was studio and filmed in last few days), then moved to Club Deuce where C&T decided to go to Morada.

April 12 and 13 were fully spent at Deering Estate for Borbon´s palace.

April 20 they filmed the Izzy scenes and then moved to Watson Island for the final shootout. There is a "Absolutely no visitors/guests on set" reminder, as they did not want to ruin the outcome (they filmed 3 endings with C&T dying or not).

April 21 also some Watson Island and on April 24 they filmed in studio (Kitten´s apartment, the Cartel hideout interior, etc)

April 27 was last day of the series, again "no visitors/guests!". They started at 3pm filming the last goodbye scene at the marina with C&T and then moved to the safe house location for the night. The very last scene filmed was how red haired Mark was killed while on watch duty in front of the wall. We also learn who the 4 assassins were - Marc Mac Auley (he was Doc Jerry in Bad timing and in many episodes) as well as Bobby Foxworth, DJs double. The last part where normally the advance for the next day is says "That´s all, folks"! Sad, the best series ever is over!;(

See all sheets I have below.

ENJOY!

LAST LOCATION FOUND: HIGHSMITH VILLA INTERIOR

@Dadrian@miamijimf@airtommy@daytona365

A joker is trying to sell Freefall script plus location sheets plus daily reports at 2500$ on ebay (stiff price for one episode´s material).

https://www.ebay.com/itm/404474850612?hash=item5e2c946d34:g:p8QAAOSwNUhk9E53&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA0KEiGiyVt5jdOGB6yGOYmGtnKzFYjUXt%2BhIJ0opt7NYnyN%2Btcu%2Bdv9r3Yn9Hjpv3OT9%2BMoUCH1pSUU3kKvHBiRmHtjd5McfQGC28k4QTj%2B9vWi4IYOCOnUJ3d4mOj77nly3Co4Hxyu%2BD47mlvgZ%2FLKgiUf4akWnBl9murBIw6OKDzOWPaEk9u%2FWRud3gmqAYa9ljX5D7Ts9M58GVZHBIq11O%2B8Nv2HLQ0DzeUO7lOEQjSVu9j5pcX9Me5CdLL1BY4bUMlGXZwo1tzpoMLmx%2F62s%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR4jUreTNYg

We learn from the cover page that the episode was indeed co-written by Michael Mann, so our earlier assumption that "Frank Holman" is in fact MM was correct.

Taking a closer look at the location sheets gets us a fuzzy but readable address for Highsmith´s villa (I read 436 E. Rivo Alto) and a hint that also the Miranda office interior was filmed at 4400 Biscayne (suspected by me earlier above).

Bildschirmfoto2023-09-07um08_25_23.thumb.png.8c4fb2abaabfb1a5a76bc7ed76d45528.png

To start with 436 E Rivo Alto does not exist, only 436 W. Rivo Alto, but it is clearly an "E." on the sheet. But the lot to the east of 440 E. (412 E. Rivo Alto today) was empty back then and later separated and the address 436 E. would have been in the middle of the undivided lot.

Bildschirmfoto2023-09-07um09_51_43.thumb.png.978cdfc64e07141df6e91e02e5d94d2e.pngBildschirmfoto2023-09-07um10_39_08.thumb.png.12e17bc748a7a6f885aa85fa3afcd534.png

Also there is a unique clue in the scene: the strange corner angle in the building parts behind Crockett sitting. And today´s 440 E Rivo Alto is the only house around on Rivo Alto with such an angle. It was also built in 1939 which fits to the clear Art Deco look of the house and the fireplace. Also the second floor building fits.

Bildschirmfoto2023-09-07um10_15_41.thumb.png.994369e248fed26dfd175813c93be36f.png

There is a short realtor video of house interior when it was last sold in 2016.

and some pics

https://www.redfin.com/FL/Miami-Beach/440-E-Rivo-Alto-Dr-33139/home/42791670

It was massively remodelled around 2007 when the price suddenly tripled.

Bildschirmfoto2023-09-07um10_10_28.png.aeea8f6793cf8390b8c70e890058d751.pngThis coincides with the BING aerials of that time (2006 vs. 2007). See difference below.

Bildschirmfoto2023-09-07um10_47_30.thumb.png.697945d74ade7807dc87352e95e08c0e.pngBildschirmfoto2023-09-07um10_48_50.thumb.png.0a7741ce017cf60fb48ede4ebc5ab770.png

If we now compare the TV scene with the 2006 BING house aerial (no changes between 1989 and 2006 due to price history) and its unique corner angle there is indeed a spot that fits. See below. I think this case is closed now, despite no 100% due to remodelled interior, but the unique angle and the address on the sheet add up to 99,9% for me. The location sheet says that the owner at the time was "Garcia". There is no historic owner record for 440 E. Rivo Alto before 2000. But it is possible, at least no contradiction here.

Bildschirmfoto2023-09-07um22_07_00.png.04a2d434be5937c8679faeb7bd670eef.png

Now we are down to 6 unknown locations overall and no locations left unknown in this last episode. ENJOY!

CORRECTION HIGHSMITH VILLA ADRESS 436 WEST RIVO ALTO DRIVE

@Dadrian@daytona365 @miamijimf @airtommy

Now I have photo proof that the interior was filmed at 436 W. Rivo Alto and not 436 E. Rivo Alto, the "E." address on the location sheet is wrong!

Evidence 1: On the sheet the owner name is listed as "Garcia". A Jorge Garcia owned the 436 WEST Rivo Alto house at the time as the Official Dade County Register clearly shows below.

Bildschirmfoto2023-09-08um20_19_54.thumb.png.76d578ef14dd79437479732a4618fe98.png

Evidence 2: photo proof of the scene when compared to the house today. It was massively remodelled, but the door where Highsmith enters (front door), the fireplace, the round structure behind, the corner with the odd angle and the door towards the garden is there and clearly recognizable. https://www.redfin.com/FL/Miami-Beach/436-W-Rivo-Alto-Dr-33139/home/42789729

At last a few more big pics of the room from different angles.

Finally, exterior pics that show the entrance and the half round living room facing the water plus the 1986 aerial.

I don't what that round thing at the turn of the stairs is called, but that's a really unique matching feature.

Great detective work, looking closely at the eBay pics.
