Administrators KaeptnCaipi Posted May 22, 2013 Administrators Report Share Posted May 22, 2013 Some news about our website / server:after we could fix our website problems I'm still in contact with our hoster. They told me that hardware we use is not up-to-date and to handle all the traffic of our website. They recommend to switch to a bigger and faster server. So far, so good.Technically we could transfer our website to a new server. That would mean some extra work on my end but anyway... If we upgrade we have to install the forum and all the content like we did the last time. Should be no problem. Another thing if we upgrade would be that we would use an up-to-date hardware and our monthly costs would go down from 49 Euros to 19 Euros! We would have to sign a 12 month contract (now we have a 1 month contract). Hoping that our site will exist more than 12 months this should be no problem, too.But there's one thing to mention: setting up a new server will cost 149 Euros once. As our donation account is empty and donations are very low at the moment I'm not willing to pay this costs on my own.So, what do you think about it? Should we switch to a newer and faster server with lower monthly costs? If we kill some of our URLs we could save additionally money. But what about the 149 Euros for setting up the new server? The way it is now with our old server and high monthly costs will not be a great future for our site. I would have to think about all this and would have to decide wether to continue (and finance) the site or cancel everything and that's it. One thing is for sure: I'm not going to pay everything on my own 'cause I can't afford it.Nachdem wir die Probleme mit unserem Webserver und der Seite beheben konnten, stehe ich immer noch in Kontakt mit unserem Webhoster. So weit, so gut.

I appreciate what you have done over the years and completely understand your position. I know members have gotten a lot of entertainment, companionship etc from the site and enough of them should be willing to cough up a little cash to keep it going. I think you should set a deadline and see if the members will contribute enough to pay for setting up the new server. Considering the cost of entertainment these days, it's a bargain. I will contribute. No one likes advertizing but it might be time to consider it. Ads would defray the cost even more.

Administrators KaeptnCaipi Posted June 10, 2013 Author Administrators Report Share Posted June 10, 2013 Website / server updateHere's another update about our website.I was setting up our new server and I'm still doing some testing. But everything looks good and moving our site to the new server should be no problem.Once again, thanks to everyone who donated to make our new server happen!I also cancelled some domains we had registered in the past. This will lower costs in the future. I'm going to keep the following domains www.miamiviceonline.com (which will be our major domain and is listed in Google) www.miamivice.info and www.miamivice.eu (one or both will redirect to our major domain. Maybe I'm using one domain for a backup/test system). Some thoughts about our software we use:as you know, we use vBulletin as our basic forum software. All the threads, posts, blogs user accounts, PM... are part of vBulletin. Additionally to that we installed so-called plug-ins. Plug-ins are extensions to the basic vBulletin features. Our plug-ins are:glossarydownload databasephoto gallerysupportdonationsmembermapI'm thinking of installing the new vBulletin 5 version if we change our server. Our old plug-ins are not supported by vBulletin 5 and if there will be an update to vB5 is not for sure. But even support for our existing system vBulletin 4 is poor. Our photo gallery is not supported any more and support for glossary, membermap or download database is poor at the moment. Therefor the plug-ins are for free. So we have to think about how to handel the plug-ins.Because of that I need to know which are your preferred plug-ins. I'm looking for plug-ins that fit to vB5. I'd like to have a glossary and a download database but I could live without a photo gallery. You can take a look at the new version of vBulletin 5 here: http://athen225.server4you.deUse your miamiviceonline.com user account to log in over there and try it out. Please note: it's not yet the final style or layout. Things will change if we'll go live with the new vBulletin 5 versionAnd now: what do you think about it?Ein Update zu unserer neuen Webseite:Ich habe einen neuen Server eingerichtet und bin derzeit noch am Testen.
miamijimf
Caipi,The new version looks good. For me, and probably for the other "location sleuths" the glossary and the data base are most important. I could live without the photo gallery and the membermap. I don't see a "Advanced Search" button on the new version, I assume that will be added. Thanks for all this effort, I'm sure it must take a lot of your time. Gecko
Was natürlich sehr wichtig ist.
Christian
I'm absolutely with Jim and Gecko! / Ich schließe mich Jim und Gecko voll und ganz an an!glossary and data base --> "most important"gallery, member map, blogs --> "I can live without it"And thank you once again Caipi for your great work and spending your time on our new server. Pink Flaming0
I agree with Jim - Save the glossary and data base. Administrators Ell.a Posted June 11, 2013 Administrators Report Share Posted June 11, 2013 Though I'm not very often here ... I can renounce blogs, gallery, membermap. The glossary is a MUST in my book. BUT: There might be a way to replace the database without using a plugin. Most videos in the database can be very easily found on Youtube now. So maybe it's possible to create a newclosed and separate section in the glossary and just to link them (like it's done on Vice TV). A solution for the other files (like pdf and images) might be my server (since a huge part of the download files are from my collection) and to link them. This is just a suggestion. Caipi, if you think it might be possible to integrate the download section into the glossary (like specified above) please email me.@ JimThere IS an extended search for the new forum.
Administrators KaeptnCaipi Posted June 11, 2013 Author Administrators Report Share Posted June 11, 2013 Hi Ell.a,danke für dein Angebot. Dazu gibt es keine Alternative, weder fürs vB4 und fürs vB5 schon gleich gar nicht... wenn alle Stricke reissen => copy&pasteHi Ell.a,thank you for offering your server for our downlaod database files. The files are on our server already and webspace is not a problem. We "only" have to set the links. But maybe there's better way.The developer of our donation plug-in offers some more plug-ins (photo gallery, shoutbox, database...) for vB 4 and vB5. Some plug-ins are available for vB5 (donations, shoutbox) some are about to come. And their database offers an import for the one we use right now. So we could upgrade from our "old" vB4 database to their "new" vb% database without editing database entries manually. The bigger problem is our glossary. There's no alternative neither for vB4 nor for vB5. So if things won't change => copy&paste...
eilahtan
Administrators KaeptnCaipi Posted June 12, 2013 Author Administrators Report Share Posted June 12, 2013 I'm doing some more testing and then I'd say let's go with our new server and vBulletin 5.All photo gallery and database files will move to our new server. And we'll see, how we can use them with vB 5.Today I began with transferring our glossary into our "normal" forum. In the future there will be one glossary entry which is bi-lingual. Unfortunately I have to copy&paste every single entry so it will take some time. I'll think about a soultion how to show the glossary and database entries which are not transferred yet.
