and nice pics of Escalante´s home (was 3952 S. Douglas Rd then, is 3710 De Garmo Lane now and massively remodelled&surrounded by other houses) that match nicely with this episode and Rpck and a hard place (Caitlin´s photo shooting). House built be Walter DeGarmo in 1921, easily seen by the typical yard style with fountain.

The short shooting of Johnny snippet is very mysterious and still unknown. We see (in order of driving):

1. a high wall on the right of an intersection (the rear mirror shows that right out of camera frame there is a driveway close and the corner of a house close to the street)

2. the intersection shows a relatively broad and long straight street crossing in a 90 degree angle (maybe a bit of bend to the left in the distance) with two stop signs and NO "no outlet" signs.

3. The stop signs and the fact that two cars are quite speeding beside each other with a main actor driving is proof that this was filmed on a major, broad street, not on a smaller alley.

4. After the intersection with the long crossing road, we see a long and dense vegetation for approximately 50 yards (only a few car lenghts)

5. the first house that comes in plain sight has a straight and short driveway and a distinctive wooden plated front with garage door and windows

6. directly next to it, just separated by a small bush is another house, more modern, with a bit longer straight driveway with a garage building in a 90 degree angle to the right.

This unique pattern, the bushy appearance and the fact that the Douglas Road/Main Highway area is the only area used in this episode that fits only leaves very few stretches of Douglas Road left, as Main Highway and Ingraham are the only other main roads around but without any 90 degree angled intersections with long straight crossing roads. North Bay Homes drive where the vigilante house was is too narrow to film that and there are no long crossroads there as well.

Photo documentary below in order of driving. I have the production reports but this intel is missing. I am stumped and cannot find any stretch that fits although I studied Google and historic aerials as some houses have been razed and rebuilt on Douglas Road.

The last pic shows Google with all streets highlighted to show that there are hardly any 90 degree intersections possible at all and of those all are a wash.

Anyone else with an idea where this was?

I searched all over - Douglas, LeJeune, Tigertail. S Miami Ave - nada.  I thought the double stop sign meant this was a one-way road, but apparently not.  They seem to have this setup for narrow 2-way roads.

Douglas/ElPrado is a candidate, but doubtful.

All Douglas intersections are a wash including El Prado. The houses on this corner were apparently remodeled but also the houses on the 86 aerial do not fit at all by shape and distance to the road.

LAST LOCATION SNIPPET FOUND: THE DRIVE BY SHOOTING @airtommy@Dadrian@miamijimf@Matt5

I kicked myself when I found this today. It is exactly where I suspected on Douglas Rd close to the vigilante house, the only reason why I haven´t found is because I was sloppy (as I have all production notes of this episode somewhere hidden deep in my basement and I did not dig it up to look and did not search accurately enough on Google either) . All houses are still there and look like in 1989. See my photo stretch below.

This was filmed southbound on Douglas Road, starting with the intersection Douglas/Matheson Ave (the street with double stop signs. Now the all 4 streets into the  intersection have stop signs, even Douglas Rd!). The houses behind Johnny are 3714 Matheson Ave and 4286 S. Douglas Rd - the latter is extremely embarrassing for me as this is the neighborhouse sharing the huge Bayan tree with Rita´s home in World of Trouble and I looked this house up in detail when I found Rita´s house in 2020!

ENJOY!

Somehow I missed this, thanks Tom!  Not only was this designed by Walter DeGarmo, it was his own home, albeit for a rather brief time because of financial troubles, I recall.  I have photos of it in one of my dozens of architecture books.  It used to be a sizable property, but was subdivided and gated.  There are now ten homes behind that gate and the road placed through the property was named for him.

Amazing Tom!

I too am afraid to say I have walked up and down this street (and right past this location) a number of times in recent years!
Matheson / Douglas Rd is only two blocks away from Park Lane (“Like a Hurricane”) too. They certainly did like this area of Coconut Grove- so many locations used in a short distance.

@Tomso when you’re done with all the locations I want you to start helping me find Jan Hammer sounds for my synthesizers. Officially. :)

Then you should help me with the 11 remaining locations unknown as they are tough to find :)

Can these sounds be found on old satellite pics somewhere or is there any other reason why you think I can really help with this?:p

an old postcard of the Raleigh shot from the diving tower Izzy was on. The significant shape of the pool similar to the body of a music instrument is obvious.

and another even older one from the 1950s or 60s towards the sea, the diving tower where Izzy was is already there as is the shape of the ppol and the pool house left of the dive tower, but the stand behind the tower where Crockett&Tubbs questioned Izzy was not built then yet.

A 1980 picture of the Beachway Apartments, 701 14th Street, used in this episode and also in Hell hath no fury (Ellen´s place). This picture is even saved in the US Library of Congress.

I liked how they used the Little River \ NE79th street section of Miami in this episode in a number of scenes. Here is the warehouse I took in June 2019.

The location is at 471 NE 79th street at NE 4th Crt. Sabor Tropical Supermarket is in the background, a poor area of Miami and at times troubled.

The vigilante house at 3540 Bay Homes Drive was razed around 8 years ago. The new house is much bigger in size and less in taste. See comparison below.

And the Escalante house (historically protected because built by famous Walter DeGarmo) was strongly remodelled years ago and the property divided so heavily that lots of other houses are very close now. See 1989, 2006 and 2023 comparison below.

Finally I managed to retrieve my production notes of this episode from the basement and analyze it more closely. We know all locations already. Interesting is that the driving scenes in the limo and the drive by shooting of Johnny are mentioned by street address at least.

Overthelineloclist3.thumb.jpg.f5265fde9c0214fdd1e38b2716af1098.jpg

BUT: there are three important scenes that were filmed, but cut from the final product. One we know (the rollerblade girl in front of the Collins Park hotel filmed on 10 Feb), but there are two others that are worth mentioning as very disturbing. Read along.

Let´s analyze in order of filming: this was the first episode filmed after officially announcing that the series will be cancelled with season 5.

Day 1 - 6 February 1989, the limo driving scenes on 79 St Causeway and some warehouse scenes at 79 street and the canal bridge nearby

OverthelineDay16Feb89.thumb.jpg.516347d60720f3bb5559152251f63c59.jpg

Day 2 - 7 Feb -  the drive by shooting at Douglas Rd (as shown by me in detail earlier) and the vigilante house scenes

OverthelinedailyDay27Feb89.thumb.jpg.283cdd441af899ab3fe56d7457c16dd9.jpg

Day 3 - 8 February - at the DeGarmo Estate - Scenes 163 and 164 were filmed (see daily report where red) but cut. Highsmith barks at Castillo after he shot Hawkins that the VICE unit is doing a bad job. Also Crockett´s question to Highsmith how he knew where to find Hawkins was cut. As this ep was shot with the final episode in mind, they obviously wanted to keep some stuff for Freefall.

Day 4 - 9 Feb - the cafe scene with Castillo and Highsmith and the plastique buy with cop murder

Day 5 - 10 February - the famous Surf Hotel scene with Rollerblade girl (scene 65-72 was cut in LA) and where they enter the vigilante limo, then in China Club (club scene)

OverthelinedailyDay8Feb89-2.thumb.jpg.81efe4acb775a8976f7e2d145e580a48.jpg

Day 6 - 13 Feb - teaser scenes at William Ave with Dr. Dinky

OverthelinedailyDay613Feb89.thumb.jpg.fc7be2ce9ee7b9b8fb838fb58b93fe0f.jpg

Day 7: 14 February - studio.  Scene 54-59 were filmed, but cut later. Incredible stuff: Crockett attacks Castillo on the budget cuts, for brownnosing Highsmith. Castillo fights back and says Crockett screwed up an easy bust and did a bad job, the OCB team watches in disbelief, one of the crooked cops watches this and concludes Crockett is ripe for an approach (maybe this was supposed to be a covert luring play by Castillo and DJ like in "Red Tape"?). Castillo gives Crockett the order to stake Hawkins out at the Surf Hotel (scenes later also filmed, but cut). I am happy that they cut this Castillo blow up as it is out of character. Crockett could not be blamed for Dr. Dinky showing up and spoiling the bust.

P.S. on 6 Feb they did some 2nd unit shots for 3 eps: Miami squeeze (marina in teaser), Jack of all trades and Lost Madonna. ENJOY!

Izzy’s pool at the now closed Raleigh Hotel (seen here in the 1960s ) for the funny and great scene directed by Russ Mayberrry with Tubbs, Crockett and Izzy selling Reptagel.

Veteran director Russ Mayberry was a first time Miami Vice director with this 1989 episode and went on to direct the series finale, “ Freefall  “. :shout::thumbsup::hippie::)
