Great article and video for 'Glades lovers and nature lovers. This guy sees some amazing things.I got REALLY interested in the dangerous plants. Check out this file photo I found of one of the poison death trees like the botanist encountered. Reminds me of when I used to camp out in the Glades and take my ROTC cadets on hikes through the Big Cypress Swamp. We had an SF Sergeant who really knew plants and would munch on various leaves all along the way. I plan to check out the Fakahatchee one of these days. Who's with me? cageyJG
Nice story, Jim. What a place to camp. Maybe somebody can coax me on an airboat tour, I like the images of bayou shacks and Spanish Moss one always associates with Louisiana. I looked up pics of some of the rare orchids that guy's found and they are something else. "He is among the few people on Earth to have seen Lepanthopsis melanantha," that has got to be a good feeling.http://orchid.unibas.ch/phpMyHerbarium/image.php?bc=196287&w=
miamijimf
http://orchid.unibas.ch/phpMyHerbarium/image.php?bc=196287&w=330Thanks. Nice photo. Yes to be one of the few people to have seen that orchid is impressive. I have always loved the Glades. Here is a photo of three of my cadets taken on one of those hikes and an orchid photo I took. I have no idea what kind it is.
cageyJG
Swamps 'R' Us! Love it. Now I can see why you want to lead an expedition back in. Time to break out some maps. The time I did the drive from coast to coast (Rte. 75) I never saw a visitors center but what looks to me like a really cool drive now is Ingraham Hwy. leading west out of south Miami. Out here we have the Great Dismal Swamp, too many mosquitoes for me, but great name. Got a nice scar there while camping. http://www.loc.gov/wiseguide/feb06/swamp.html
