From his earliest boyhood on he was an enthusiastic baseball player. At the age of 13 he decided to start a carrer as a rock musician. In the 60th and 70th he had considerable success with performances in clubs on the Sunset Strip. Finally a friend of him gave him the advice to change to play acting. For the leading role in the Broadway play Zoot suit he obtained the "Tony Award" in 1978. His doubtless mostly well known roles are Lt. Castillo in the tv-show Miami Vice (1984-1989) and Gaff in the cult film "Blade Runner" (1982). In the year of 1989 he was nominated for the "Oscar" for the "best actor in a leading role" in the film "Stand and Deliver" (1988). 1992 he made his debut as stage director in the film "American Me". Since 2003 he playes Commander William Adama in the successful science fiction series "Battlestar Galactica".

 

As Olmos was characterized by his youth (which was characterized by impecuniousness an violence) he spent in East Los Angeles, he does a great deal as UNICEF-ambassador (youth work and childrens right). From 1994 to 2002 he was married to his second wife actress Lorraine Bracco. Bodie and Mico Olmos are the children of the first marriage with Katja Keel (1971-1992)

Als seit frühester Jugend begeisterter Baseball-Spieler entschied er sich im Alter von 13 Jahren zu einer Karriere als Rock-Sänger. In den 1960er und 1970er Jahren hatte er damit beachtlichen Erfolg bei Auftritten in Clubs auf dem Sunset Strip. Ein Freund riet ihm schließlich, ins Schauspielfach zu wechseln. Für seine Hauptrolle in dem Broadway-Stück Zoot Suit erhielt er 1978 den Tony Award. Seine sicherlich bekanntesten Rollen sind Lt. Castillo in der TV-Serie Miami Vice (1984-1989) und Gaff im dem Klultfilm Blade Runner 1982 . 1989 wurde er als bester männlicher Hauptdarsteller in Stand and Deliver (1988) für den Oscar nominiert. 1992 gab er sein Debüt als Regisseur in Das Gesetz der Gewalt. Seit 2003 spielt er Commander William Adama in der erfolgreichen Science Fiction-Serie Kampfstern Galactica.

 

Geprägt durch seine von Armut und Gewalt gekennzeichnete Jugend in East Los Angeles engagiert sich Olmos u. a. als UNICEF-Botschafter massiv in der Jugendarbeit und für die Rechte von Kindern. Zwischen 1994 und 2002 war er mit der Schauspielerin Lorraine Bracco in zweiter Ehe verheiratet. Aus seiner Ersten Ehe mit Kaija Keel (1971 - 1992) hat er zwei Kinder, Bodie und Mico Olmos.
