I can't read that expression. It looks like he's struggling with something. What episode is this, please?

This is the Lombard teaser, right after Sal stings his dad with “and you talk about my lifestyle?” before walking out

Sonny is taking in Al’s reaction in this screen cap, because even though he loathes him, he knows how it feels to be estranged from his beloved son.

This is a great script with one of DJ’s best performances as he rises to the occasion with Farina.

Thank you, Dardrian! That's a wonderful explanation! Now, I have to go watch this episode again!

There is also Sonny's satisfaction at watching Lombard suffer and sorting out how he feels about himself for feeling that way. As good as this is, it's not the true season finale imo.

Like @Dadrian mentioned this a very well written script and produced also. The respect that built up between Sonny and Lombard became evident through the episode, of course Dennis Farina steals the show here. But the writing where Sonny can identify with Lombards situation with his son was particularly well done. Any actor like Farina who plays the bad guy and is loved by the audience or who is rooted for by the audience is a fine actor. James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano did this very well too.

Of course 4 years later when Lombard returns in “World of Trouble” Sonny was trying to keep him alive and was visibly moved when he died.
