He was certainly good - he came back and directed “The Savage” aka Duty and Honor” in Season 3 which was his best in my opinion.

Lombard and Free Verse só good- he also did Milk Run, Whatever Works, Bought and Paid For, Phil the Shill, Florence and Sons & Lovers then in Season 3 The Savage.

He did brilliant work. I love all of those episodes.

What was the story behind his brief return in season 3? because Wolf replaced him and he officially departed after season 2 with Mann to work on Crime Story.

Yes there was a big change in crew from the end of season 2 - Mann wanted to darken the show - I’m not sure why but they must have asked him to come back to direct.
