In my view they didn't have to get married (have it on paper) Sonny and Gina could still have been a couple living together.  Love them together! My favorite Vice couple. I think maybe Tubbs and Alicia would have been a good couple or Angelina maybe.

They would have been great together but I don't think he loved her, but she certainly loved him. You can sense her heart pumping for him early in season 1 when they have a cosy moment together. The problem I think for Sonny not being in a longer relationship was Gina made herself too to him, and without trying to sound misogynistic, made her sort of disposable. She should have made it more challenging, made him earn the dates. Like "do you want to go for a drink tonight Gina?" and she would say "we'll see"

I do think Sonny's one true love in the show was Caroline but his lifestyle didn't fit into her life and he put his work first.

But she did deny him many dates in the beginning/the Pilot episode, saying "I'll think about it," as she explained why on the boat, "My father always said never to get involved with a man on the rebound and as far as I'm concerned you're bouncing so hard you're practically out of the ball park. You're still in love with Caroline" Which was then evident by Sonny whispering Caroline's name in her ear. I think Sonny used Gina to find comfort in. I personally also don't think he loved her, but at times it seemed, he could have. Unless that was just friendly flirting. But there were without any doubt potential/possible for them to be together, if the producers/network had chosen to go that route. As mentioned before, Gustave Reinigner, who also made the script "Forgive us our Debts," had written a script about Sonny and Gina being undercover as a married couple with the title "Mother's Keeper," which unfortunately wasn't chosen. Originally in The Pilot script, which was cut from the final production, Gina actually meant to leave the boat as she went down stairs to grab her purse I think, but then Crockett managed to seduce her. He was persistent, how could she not fall for that charm in the end.

I remember, when I first watched Miami Vice, I think after season 3, I didn't expect to see more scenes with Sonny and Gina so this was definitely a pleasant surprise in season 4.

Reinigner, I think, revised Forgive us our Debts. There's a version titled "The Gang's All Here" which was co-written by a number of people (including Dick Wolf) with a revision date putting it the day before Reinigner's version. The versions as near as I can tell are almost identical.

I agree!

Although I think he and Gina would have been good together, my feeling is less that he didn't love her/she was too available, but more that he wouldn't let himself commit to her because he felt guilt over the failure of his marriage to Caroline.  He felt that he would ultimately cause pain to Gina by getting emotionally involved with her (as opposed to "having some fun together").

So why did he let himself get involved with Caitlin?  Well... I think it did hit him like a hurricane.

Although he was ready to marry Theresa in S3. I'm not sure why Crockett would cause Gina pain, as she would know what he was going through and could help him. They could support each other.

True about Theresa, but I could never figure out why they were together in the first place.

With Gina, she was the first woman he was with after Caroline.  I don't think many share my opinion, but I think he felt guilt over the failure of his marriage, and didn't want to get emotionally involved with someone he truly cared for, in case he hurt them as he believed he had hurt Caroline.  I felt that (at least in the initial year or so after his divorce) that he was holding himself back from true commitment to another woman.  He didn't want to depend on a woman for emotional support and help, he would rather deny those feelings and rely only on himself.  That's just the way I see him; others don't have to agree.

It's okay, I wanted to hear your view on it. It's good to hear others perspective on things. Thanks for elaborating! It could be that, he was holding himself back from true commitment, because of how it turned out with Caroline, as you said. I haven't thought about that before. It also seemed to me, that he wanted to be with someone, but sometimes because of what he did it got in the way. For instance how it was with Brenda, all the expectations she had to him about a regular life, he knew he couldn't fulfill. And then I guess at some point, he was ready again to give marriage a chance.

Both Theresa and Caitlin came across as forced romances. At least with Gina it felt natural.

The Brenda romance felt real but he wasn't in love, I just think he was excited by her life style. That one was just a fling.

Yes, I think with Brenda, he was "testing the water."  I didn't seriously get the impression he was ready for a commitment, and in fact I felt like she was also in it for a good time.  When she initiated the 20 questions game with him, I"m not sure what she was thinking.  Certainly she showed no signs of wanting to settle down to a "normal" life and meeting his son--if she even knew he had a son.  Still haven't figured out how he got to know her (and she knew he was a cop)...

When I look at this one screenshot and their facial expressions, he seems to be thinking, "why couldn't I love Gina the way I love Caitlin?  We could have been good together," and Gina seems to be thinking, "I loved Sonny once, but I'm OK with us being just friends now.  It's probably better that way."

When I watch the episode, it doesn't give me the same feeling, LOL!  For me, the episode proves that Gina will always love Sonny, and that while he may think he is over any romantic feelings for her, she is very precious to him.

It would have been great if they implied that they would give it another try in the final episode. Another decent idea for the finale is if they centered it around Gina, like maybe she is kidnapped and held hostage and Sonny tries to save and when he does they grow closer, with the idea he could have lost her.
