  3. For me it actually deepens the emotional attachment or aspect…playing her mother helped connect more to not only Gina, but her past & backstory as well. Plus, it really gave Saundra a chance to “shine”, as she got to show & utilize her singing talents as well.

  4. Completely agree. Like I said, I get that they wanted to showcase Sandra (a bit too late, maybe), but this just doesn't work for me.

  5. My issue is not so much if she is Cuban or Italian its the fact that Sandra plays her mother, it ruins the viewers emotional investment in it, for me anyway I just can't take it seriously. Someone like Maria Conchita Alonso should have played her mother.

  8. I periodically check Youtube for whenever a cleaner version of this is uploaded. The twangy guitars and synths were one of the best things I'd ever heard as a kid and made me religiously watch cycling just to hear the theme tune. it's based on this by the same artist from 1988.

  9. I actually don’t think it would have been better. If some other actress had played Gina’s mom, it would not have had the emotional impact we needed to connect with Gina & her character. And they would have had to “explain” a lot more to let viewers know it was supposed to be Gina’s mother. In my opinion, the way it was done & handled was perfect!

  10. Honestly, it didn't bother me. Elena is shown with a different hair color and style; as well as a style of dress and makeup that was more 1960-appropriate. Would it have been better if another actress had played Gina's mom? Maybe. But for me, it worked.

  11. Yeah but you say to yourself the first time you watch it "that's Gina isn't it?" something you would see in a Quantum Leap episode. It takes away all the seriousness, it's a bit daft imo.

  12. The fact is, Gina being her mother’s “mirror image” (in Klaus’s words) and having an identical singing voice were a major plot point because they served as karmic vengeance on Pedrosa to the point of madness again. Also, many mothers and daughters are that similar. You’re free to think a different actress was needed, but I hope you feel that way about all the highly-dramatized episodes MV did…

  13. Interestingly enough, her (apparent) birth surname of Navarro is Basque-derived, not even Spanish, just to mix things up some more. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navarro_(surname) I have my own theories about Gina's name (including that it is Regina) but it should be noted that "Regina" in Spanish is not pronounced the way that would lead to "Gina". https://www.behindthename.com/name/regina However, I can also see Elena liking the name and nickname and not caring. Cross-cultural names are a thing, and Gina is not as far out as naming her "Harriet", or something.

  14. Perhaps the form "Gina" is more likely to be used by people with Italian heritage. However, basically it's a nickname or diminutive for "Regina," which is a name that comes from Latin and is used in both Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking cultures as well: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regina_(given_name)

  16. Interesting. They’ve taken some samples from the 1985 MV album, slowed them WAY down, and layered them over an ambient drone.

  17. OK so MV was imagined as MTV cops before it materialized. But were there movies before, that could have inspired MV producers with their storytelling? Yes there were some for sure. This is a new to me movie : Summer Lovers[1982] Critics often gave it negative reviews, but I don't think this movie is that bad at all. This is 10/6 for me, and actually a very fun movie to watch if you just want to feel some summer vibes. There are a couple of scenes in it where the background music leads the storytelling.

  19. I noticed images of John Diel, Olivia Brown, EJO, Mike Talbot and the late Charlie Barnett. What films are those ? I'm assuming they weren't all in Marathon Man.
