  3. Some of you may know how much I love season 3 costumes. I was not “searching” for it, but I came across this recently and bought it for $39 because it had “Universal Studios” property tags on it. I knew I recognized it, but couldn’t quite place it. Well I found it last night while watching Cuba Libre!! I’m gonna go all Coop here with the details for the sake of finding more stuff like this in the future, but given the Miami store on the tags where other screen-worn items were purchased, the Universal Studios tag, and these two photos below, I’m 99% sure it’s at least “authentic”!!! edit: forgive the horrible offering of the episode shot—it’s my iPhone taking a picture of the Blu Ray on my TV. Maybe some of you screen cap folk can help me verify.

  7. Prop car was reused in my garage. 1982-1983 Dodge 400 (or possibly 1984-1985 Dodge 600). Mine is a 1982. It’s hard to tell, but this one on MV could be a coupe or sedan. I believe Gina drove a 400 sedan in an episode.

  8. Currently going through the original (and the “real”) Magnum p.i., with Tom Selleck. I haven’t watched it in probably 10-12 years, and I recently acquired the Fabulous Films Blu-ray set…which is almost all, if not all, unedited original broadcast versions! Anyway, I’m in the 12th episode of Season 1, “Thicker Than Blood”, and who do I notice guest starring (have never noticed this before)…but ‘Shadow’ himself—Vincent Caristi (from the MV episode “Shadow In the Dark”)! He looks a little more ‘human’ in this…but, I think he’s supposed to be a junkie. So, maybe that’s what fried him out & he then headed to Miami. Just kidding! (Side-note: This episode of “Magnum” was the first one to feature the famous starting theme song. The 11 episodes before it originally had a different starting theme.) A couple pics of Caristi…one as ‘Shadow’, and one from the episode of “Magnum”. Sadly he died fairly young in 1990, but I don’t believe a cause of death was ever stated: Vincent Caristi as ‘Shadow’, in MV’s Season 3 episode “Shadow In the Dark” (1986). Vincent Caristi as ‘Joey’, in Magnum p.i.’s Season 1 episode “Thicker Than Blood” (1981).

  12. That´s a good possibility and very close vibe wise. The 1986 aerial is inconclusive whether Palapa was there at that time already. But there is a potential squared pointed roof (in red) on the 86 aerial that is not there today. The layout of buildings and trees from the episode do not match up though. Needs further investigation, but definitely worth a closer look.

  13. Without seeing your sketch of the venue configuration it's hard to scan the aerials, but a thing I will say is I get strong vibes of one place in Miami today, if it was mapped into that time - Palapa at Upper Buena Vista. 1. It's a small concert venue with plenty of dancing and drinking space 2. Lots of vegetation throughout including large mature trees 3. It is close to the predominantly black areas of Miami, which fits with the band/music in the scene 4. It's not far from the following in the sheet driving scene I can't tell from the aerials if this area would be feasible for that build in the 1980s, and I certainly don't claim this is the location, but vibe-wise it's very close to me, just food for thought. Assuming of course that the venue in the episode was used per its real-life purpose and the band actually played there, not made up by the crew. Also, anybody knows what this flag on the wall is, on the left? The rainbow flag on the right could be irrelevant to the location finding, but if the flag on the left is something unique, say ethnic/geographic, maybe googling relevant cultural-historical congregation places in Miami in the 80s could yeild a lead.

  14. Interesting catch! Back to the Future and Miami Vice are both Universal too. That episode would have been filmed just a few months after Back to the Future came out.

  15. Could be, but they all look virtually the same. On that note, in Tale of the Goat when Bobby Profile is filming one of his ads, you can hear his voice (off screen) say something like “I don’t know if it will take you back to the future…”, which suggests he’s trying to sell a Delorean, but I don’t remember ever seeing one on his lot. Anyone else ever catch that?

  16. If I was a size 40, not only would I buy that right now, but I'd drive there to pick it up (Sebring is maybe 3 hours away from me). Anyway, I got a new jacket but it looks/fits kinda weird. It says it's 100% linen but the way it both looks and feels reminds me more of a robe, lol. Wasn't expensive and it does fit me well, plus it's super light, but it's very casual looking (Which I guess is good if I wanna rock it with a t-shirt and slacks). Any idea how to get this thing looking sharp? Somehow I think ironing/pressing it like a traditional suit is not an option, lol. Also, I have another jacket coming in, hopefully tomorrow, that's also 100% linen, but it looks nothing like this one regarding the material. I'll report on that later.

  17. I know they bought multiples of each item for costumes. Even if it’s not THE one in the photo, it’s still a big win for me. Unlike some of my other items, this timeless 100% linen piece could be worn anywhere with lots of different combinations—in spring/summer, of course.

  20. @MichaelAce your jacket is AMAZING! MiamiVibe is right about the shoulder pad part, but if you did want to try for the look in the photo below, I’m sure you could find some removable shoulder pads with Velcro (or something non-damaging). My mom had those in the 80s

  22. Yes Dennis Farina was sublime as Lombard . He did two episodes in Season 1 and one at the end of Season 5. Farina was a good and charismatic actor as well as busy — so I think we were lucky to get him for three episodes. All the episodes he was in he was the main star having as many scenes as Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas.

  29. I did a flag scrutiny myself a few days ago and came to the same conclusions. That´s no country flag and certainly no maritime flag either (I have a sailor certificate, but never heard about such a flag). My bet is that is a local flag (ie. like that of a sports club or an ethnical group. The quality is very bad and the grainy picture is not really better after enhancements (see attached), but the yellow spots in the red box look like symbols or letters, which strengthen the impression of a cultural/ethnical flag. Interestingly the colors of the flag resemble the Cuban flag pretty well. I would not bet too much on the Jamaican angle though. According to script the shooters were Jamaicans and Desmond Maxwell kind of middleman, plus the daily call sheet for that days shows that the dancers/Jamaican audience were extras hired for that scene and no word about the name of the band. Thus, I conclude this was most likely a music venue (or at least a venue dressed up as a music one for the scene) with Jamaican flavor added by the production company. Not vice versa.

  31. All under the assumption that the venue was as-is real-life location in the scene, I am trying to pursue this through the Reggae and flag leads - no result, but posting as food for thought again. Incidentally I just recently learned from some Jamaicans that their countymen like to settle in Broward (as opposed to Miami-Dade). Indeed, South Florida is the second highest concentration of Jamaicans in the US after New York, but there are no significan communities in central Miami-Dade, though plenty further north (source): Yes, Broward is far from the other locations, but I just like to explore and who knows where it could lead. Upon googling relevant places though, I didn't find much, neither in the 80s nor now, except this Caribbean tiki bar with a music stage in Hollywood, which also had trellis fencing similar to the one in the scene, but this place was just recently built: All that is not to say that a Reggae band has to play where Jamaicans live... but a higher chance maybe. Speaking of the band, finding out its name appears to be impossible (knowing the name could lead to their possible regular venues) - all we know is that they were playing Bob Marley's Jamming. The second research track is the flag, and here it is again, now with enhanced color: I'm no vexillologist, but I'm fairly sure it's not a country flag. If you assume this is a horizontal flag that is hung sideways, as is often done with flags, it becomes this: Lots of country flags have some kind of inner rectangle top left (in fact like the star-spangled banner) and having something that looks like a coat of arms in there would be also very appropriate, but no country flags really have thin vertical stripes, that's unusual. Could it be a maritime flag? Wouldn't be inappropriate, Miami is on the water after all. And plenty of vertical stripes there, but again no match. @Tom could you possibly pull out an enhanced image version from your MV copy to try and discern if that's some heraldic symbol? Let's continue brainstorming!

  32. I’ve never seen Dexter, but that photo is not from the LA area or even California. Wood piles are not used for docks on the west coast because the tidal bore is too large. Concrete piles with floating docks going up and down along them are the standard. The tidal range can be as high as 6-7 feet at times and the wood piles with docks fixed to them just wouldn’t work.

  34. My girlfriend and I were out and about yesterday and decided to drop by the new Porsche Driving Center in Carson (just south of Los Angeles) and see what it was about. They have a precious few Porsches on display. The main purpose is that there is a test track you can pay to drive a selected Porsche on which sounds fun. BUT! The main event was looking behind a glass wall into a repair shop/display area and seeing what I am positive is the exact same Porsche driven by Danny Sullivan (I think I remember this right) in the episode "Florence Italy." If you look at the episode and the pic here, you will see only a couple minor logo/paint alterations. But the car is there. I highly doubt they made more than a few of these. What do you think? I also posted this on my instagram with a side by side (pcnordy).

  38. Agreed! I’ve always thought that they should have taken “World of Trouble”, tweaked it (aka get rid of the “havoc” thing at the beginning), elongated it out, and used it as the series finale! The show (along with Calderone) started with Lombard…it could have ended with him.

  39. Amen!! They really should have had Lombard in a few more episodes.

  40. Chuck Norris was able to starr in 10/2 movies just like Seagal and was famous for action scenes where he beats the shit out of the opponents, that is why I compared to him. I don't remember Chuck starring/as main character/ ever in good movies, but I remember how bad was the Walker - Texas Ranger series For example this. It is one of the trashest movie(Forest Warrior - 1996) I have ever seen even if it was produced for children. Scenes like grabbing the chainsaw and it stops are just insane

  42. Unlawful Entry reminded me of Cape Fear (1991 version) which I watched many years ago so I just rewatched it. I like the movie and I think De Niro was great as the psychopath. This must be his most vicious character across all his movies I've seen. As a side note, it appears to be shot around Ft Lauderdale and at first glance is pretty tough in terms of location sleuthing.

  43. Sorry to break it to you, but the jacket DJ is wearing does have shoulder pads, in contrast to what some other people said. Yes he also wore unconstructed jackets, but this ain’t one of them. The padding is what gives it that 80s silhouette, together with the dropped shoulders and oversized fit. Your jacket has no padding and a very straight fit, which makes it look like a regular jacket, not necessarily 80s. My advise is to invest in vintage jackets, because honestly, very few tailors or fashion brands are gonna be able to exactly recreate that authentic 80s look (unfortunately).

  47. Yeah, Danny Sullivan's acting isn't that great. But that's what happens when you try to get actual race car drivers to act lol. I personally love the beginning of the episode, Crockett & Tubbs cruising the streets at night. Great vibes there. Then the memorable car chase. Then the bike race. And the scenes which Danny isn't in. And yes, the video was shot in his shop, they have a little display area where there's a few cars.
