Sonny-Burnett
VINTAGE 1984 MURAPHONE MP-800/801 TELEPHONE ~ SAME MODEL USED IN MIAMI-VICEUnfortunately, I had been watching for this phone on Ebay and neglected to bid on it. Was the first time I had ever seen one on Ebay before. http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1984-MURAPHONE-MP-800-801-TELEPHONE-SAME-MODEL-USED-IN-MIAMI-VICE-/271237882295?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&nma=true&si=W5aEuVJJSC%252B%252B%252BCvuBHrNsvEbhZE%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

Beach_Vice
Is that Ebay seller a member here? If not, would it be just me that thinks it's strange that someone knowledgeable enough about Miami Vice props to list the exact same phone isn't a member here?Awesome phone though. Not sure, I might like the phone in the Daytona more.

I sent the Seller a note on this and he must know something about these phones because he responded that this Muraphone was made only in this model, so would have to have been the model used on the show. I asked if he was on any vice forums and he didn't reply so I am guessing he just knows his phones and probably saw it on the DVDs.
Beach_Vice
The thing that gets me though is it's different. The one recently sold on Ebay has 16 buttons on the handset, while clearly the one on the St Vitus Dance only had 12 buttons. So was there a model older than the 800/801. Or is the 800 the one we're looking for, and we keep seeing the 801?Just want to find the real deal. Here's an older model from 1980. Cordless too, but ugly. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out too.http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Muraphone-Cordless-Telephone-System-Complete-System-/160855610665Here's another just a cordless. Muraphone 510/511http://it.picclick.com/Muraphone-cordless-MP-510-511-vintage-anni-70-200944538689.htmlIt could be this model 600/601:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Muraphone-Model-MP-600-601-Full-Duplex-Cordless-Extension-Telephone-Complete-/181157926859listing ended though. Lotsa pics for detail. I'm pretty sure that's what we're looking for, not the 800/801.

You're right about the difference in number of handset buttons. The 600/601 does seem to be a closer match to the Vice version...and it was relisted though may not be functional. Beach_Vice
Good finds! I wonder if their batteries still take a charge. Is there a thread here of the car phone in the Daytona in season one?
mvnyc
Good finds! I wonder if their batteries still take a charge. Is there a thread here of the car phone in the Daytona in season one?Funny you should mention that, I've been looking for that phone for quite some time. There must've been more than one model, because the screen shots differ over the course of the series.
Kavinsky
I'm not sure but it was used in the daytona to cover up the auto shift indicators, and I theorised that the reason why the burlwood it sat on was removed after it left the show was because it was drilled into it to mount the phone on to it. Although I seem to remember him using a CB radio or radio prop for one eyed jack when he said he was going to call something in, but couldn't as he wasn't a cop anymore because of his suspension.and Jurrasic actually has some sort of phone in his like it did on the show, think its burred in the gallery somewhere...Edit: my mistake, he has some sort of radio rigged into the cigarette lighter it looks likehttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/photoplog/index.php?n=6714I could have sworn he had a prop for it at one point.but there was a few other phone photos amongst that section http://www.miamiviceonline.com/photoplog/index.php?n=6709Not sure about what the deal is with the 49Mhz cordless frequency, I'm really not a phone or radio personhttp://www.miamiviceonline.com/photoplog/index.php?n=6708http://www.miamiviceonline.com/photoplog/index.php?n=747http://www.miamiviceonline.com/photoplog/index.php?n=510http://www.miamiviceonline.com/photoplog/index.php?n=
Beach_Vice
I don't want to hijack this thread, but the Daytona car phone Sonny has in "Nobody lives forever" looks like a Harris Alpha 2000 (or whatever slightly newer model there might be) handset. Hard to source photos. It's the closest I've seen though. Harris even made police radio/car phones which is why I think I'm narrowing in. The logo by Sonny's thumb in that pic does vaguely look like the Cobra however. So I'm not sure of anything yet. Still looking.http://www.lctmag.com/technology/article/40982/harris-alpha-2000-car-telephone-allows-for-future-channelshttp://www.wb6nvh.com/MTSfiles/Carphone9.htmhttp://sherwoodpark.canadianlisted.com/art-antiques/vintage-1980-harris-mobile-car-cell-radio-phone-with-manual_805653.html

mvnyc
I don't think it was a Muraphone model in the car at all, I think it was either an AT&T model, or maybe Motorola, but all the Motorola models I've looked at don't have the series of buttons with the up/down arrows on the back. If someone knows, feel free to post it. I want one!
Beach_Vice
This is as close as I've seen for the Daytona car phone. It' a Harris Alpha 2000 receiver. Not a dead ringer (lol) but close enough to make me suspect the brand.http://www.wb6nvh.com/MTSfiles/600TT30.JPGThe GE mobile stuff looks very much alike. Also Telecom's receivers look like it too. There's only a few brands with that bent shape though. So it's a somewhat narrow search, I'm just lacking actual photos of the old phones. The day it's found should be a good one. Someone mentioned AT&T and Motorola. I did see a Motorola 'American Series' that looked similar also. Anyway, if you guys find anything else out or can share episode titles that the phone is visible, please share.

Beach_Vice
Here's an ad from another company, the second from the left is a similar design also. I guess there could be tons of different companies that used that bent and tapered design. Thanks for the screenshot also.http://www.vinmag.com/online/index.php?app=gbu0&ns=prodshow&ref=VP13516-04-mobile-phones&sid=m015a489842n75w690mn1bxa01h3bb31
Kavinsky
Hard to say but I did notice that it is linked into the cigarette lighter in the ash tray and here are a few shots from the daytona folder I have and it looks like its got more than 12 on it, more like 18.Hmm I always figured it was just a prop, never a working phone but I guess that means someone really did call him in sons and lovers. Beach_Vice
Here's one with a similar layout, but older design maybe? It's GE. Great screenshot Kavinsky. It's definitely different than the one in 'Nobody lives forever.'http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-GE-1000-Carfone-Soft-Pac-Portable-Car-Phone-/171029134736?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27d2217d90
Beach_Vice
Here's an 86 model. It's looking really close the the one Kavinsky gave us a screenshot of.http://www.ebay.ca/itm/GE-Manual-LBI-31574-Carfone-Cellular-Mobile-Radio-1986-/200940852991?pt=US_Manuals_Magazines&hash=item2ec90216ff
Beach_Vice
Closer yet! This one is circa 1984...http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-g-e-mobile-radio-GE-STAR-CELLULAR-MOBILE-TELEPHONE-CIRCA-1984-CAR-PHONE-/190644566489GE is close, but the General(LOGO HERE)Electric isn't at the bottom of all the buttons in Kavinsky's screenshot, so I would assume it is not. Only because the logo at the bottom is all I've found so far.Plus, while this is now a dual topic, how about the ring tones. Does anyone know if what we hear on the show is accurate? I assume a sound technician adds the ring sound in post production.
Kavinsky
Not sure I'm not having much luck looking it up on youtubethis was the closest I could find to a video about ithttp-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAeBlL1zukoand here, not sure how close it is but jesus look at the prices!http-~~-//www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpoX6Mh4kLwalso gotta love this one, like this celuar phone that ONLY weighs 30 ounces, good god Thats about the same weight as his pistol WITH ammo in it, no wonder crockett never used one of those while walking around, it would weigh more than his gun and two extra clips of ammo.lol he would have needed a spare holster just for it! Beach_Vice
I bought a Muraphone 601 and I've begun the waiting process. I'll let you know how it works and post pictures when I get it.In the mean time, I've made zero progress isolating a particular make for either of the Daytona phones pictured in this thread. I still scower the web daily for pictures of old phones.
