mvnyc
Jan Hammer used the Fairlight CMI, maybe you can find a cheap one on Ebay?
Administrators James Posted November 23, 2014 Administrators Report Share Posted November 23, 2014 If it's the 80s sounds, you want - then I suggest getting something from the 80s. As mvnyc said, try eBay.Being outdated and used, they might be cheap.
Crockettt
BlueAir try Yamaha DX-7 and Roland Juno 106. Classic 80's synthesizers and you can get these for 300-400$ on ebay.
Jerry B.
I would quote Crockettt. I had both back in the eighties and I can assure with them alone you can get most of that sounds. 99% of the guitars Jan did on MV are made with a DX7, filtered or not thru guitar pedals/fx. Same for all the metallic/bell-ish sounds. As far as drums, Linn I & II, Yamaha RX5 and Roland808 can do the job well, but you don't need to buy this machines, there are tons of sampled libraries (some free) out there. Not exactly the same as the real thing, but real close. On MV, Fairlight was mostly used for percussion (like the melodic timbales of the main theme), ethnic sounds, effects, and for recording sequences.
