has anyone else lost their love of the bond series?

I always watch this series it's kind of a tradition.  Connery is James Bond, the rest are just OK.  IMO a good James Bond must have two qualities:  1.) Be macho enough to make all those stunts slightly less than totally unbelievable and 2.) be a suave English gentleman.  Moore is kind of weak in no 1. and Craig lacks a little no. 2.

yeah but this is where Moore excels IMO. Moore it's finesse. there are lot of situations where he is in difficulty especially with women, but each time he flips the situation to his advantage. This happens often with Moore, and this is why it's my favorite. Moore it's the well functioning brain

saying that Connery is the only Bond is a bit simplistic. Connery is certainly a great Bond, but personnally i prefer Moore :). And when he told the public he had been abused when he was a kid made me love that actor even more

I think a lot has to do with who you great up with. My brothers and I grew up with Moore so he was always our favorite. As a kid I didn’t like Connery at all. As an adult I have different likes for all of them but Lazenby. Oddly I can’t picture any other Bond doing the films they did. Just me. Weird.

Moore was the first Bond I ever saw (but I had read the books before that so never confused the movie Bond and the literary Bond), but I preferred Connery because he came closer to the book version of Bond. But then Brosnan came along and I felt he was closer to the book Bond than Connery. I tend to think who you identify as Bond comes down to a single question: did you read the books first or see the movies first? If it's the books, you've formed a picture in your mind and whoever comes closer to that will be Bond for you. If you saw the movies first, I think Timm525's observation is solid. Whoever you saw first will kind of imprint on you.

Without reading the whole thread, I’m assuming I’m the only one here who likes “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”(?). I may have even asked this already. ?( :)

GL was not a good Bond, but that film is really good IMO.

I’m fully prepared to be roasted… :)

After Casino Royale, I haven't watched any of the new James Blond movies.

He doesn't suit to that role at all. Plus they're too much mindless action and violence.

Roger Moore was my favorite. He added some dry English humor to the role.

frankly i'm wondering why you should be ashamed. Lazenby was a great Bond. I forgot to say something. personnally i love Craig. not the Bond but the actor. Craig is a victim of the scenarists/plot. with the good plot Craig could have broken it all like we say here. IMO latest Bonds have something very good, it's the casting. from the Bond girls to the villain, they're all great. but the plot(s) ruins it all

And also the statement that the Bond you grew up with may influence you is interesting. never thought of this before to be honest. but it's highly plausible

You won´t get roasted. OHMSS was a great Bond movie and GL a decent Bond (It was also special storyline due to the marriage part and the killing of his wife at the end). He did not have the charisma of Connery, but nowhere near to be ashamed of. I think he was a better fit than Craig.

been rewatching the man with the golden gun, and even if rather few locations (Hong-kong, and Ha long bay) still entertaining, and refreshining. the HQ into the ship wreck is brilliant. and again everything looks plausible. And of course great villain in the name of Christopher Lee. not mentioning Hervé Villechaize performance into the vicious dwarf role. mind blowing performance from H. Villechaize

I appreciate the replies @jpaul1 and @Tom

I’m definitely not ashamed, but I’m usually in the minority on that one. Glad there are others here who get it, but I shouldn’t be surprised. Great stuff.

been rewatching the living daylights, and it's not a Bond, it's a Disney movie. everything is overmade. the russian general is beyond ridiculous. it's sad, because again the casting was pretty good. Dalton is good, the Bond girl (even highly stereotyped) is cute, and J. Rhys-Davies is great actor. but well i think we never got a Bond girl that stereotyped. she doesn't get anything. she drinks her Bond eyes. it's a disney princess

Sean Connery is a Scot though! and never even tried to sound different.

I believe you but it worked for US audiences.  Most can't differentiate a Scot from a Brit unless the Scottish accent is heavily emphasized, at least I can't.

Does anyone remember Steve Martin as a cheapskate James Bond on an SNL skit around 1987-88 with Sting as the villain? During the card game Martin tells Sting he can’t place his accent, to which Sting replies “that’s because mine is English”. :)

edit: I found it @6:45

Sorry, quoted your reply twice...That's news to me but then I certainly can't be trusted to properly identify different accents from across the USA either! Mind you some American actors (and actresses) can do an excellent English accent, which I'm sure isn't that easy, and I've actually initially thought they WERE English, they were that good.

just finished License to kill. and apart the good seaplane stunt, it's pretty much like the precedent. we don't know if it's some disney, or some indiana jones. highly unrealistic. what is weird it's that at the beginning there's a very violent scene (rape of a friend wife), and most of what follows is like if they were aiming at a kids audience, weird. great bond girl though (Carey Lowell), and highly enjoyable presence of Q also. now wondering if i'll put myself goldfinger :) (edit: now watching :))

been watching from Russia with love (in my Bond moment :). hope not hijacking this thread), and if no exotic places except the orient express like train the plot is solid. i totally understand why a UK magazine noted it 9th better british film of all times

watched thunderball just after, and the villain is great. the casino scene is really great. Adolfo Celi is one of the greatest Bond villain IMO, along with Waltz. the film has epic scenes. like the underwater fight. and the balltrap scene. where Bond says i never used any weapon in my life, and hip-shoots the clay disk :)

now watching we only live twice. and the introduction makes me think it's gonna be lot of fun. hope i won't be disapointed

edit: we only live twice is great. really a good Bond. no major flaw. highly, not to say extremelly mysogynistic though. it's a bit of a shame because it's really a good Bond

edit 2: diamonds are forever is average. not a bad Bond but not the best IMO.

to her majesty secret service is not bad neither. the plot is a bit slow paced though. the final helos scene is great. even if there's a major flaw. when they destroy the lab that contains a highly dangerous virus with explosives. not realistic much..

Why not like OHMSS?  It's just like "Like A Hurricane" + "Deliver Us From Evil"!

(Now I'll prepare to get roasted...)

I too have not liked a Bond film since CR, nor watched one since Skyfall, and I have my own opinions about everything, but I will always love my older faves.

I personally think the best James Bond and most realistic agent was Timothy Dalton. He’s the victim of average stories, his movies just don’t hold up as well because of the storyline - not because of ‘his’ Bond.

The Connery era were the better movies of course, classics but I just feel that Dalton comes off much more authentic than anyone else.

My fav Bond actor was Pierce Brosnan. Casino Royal and those followed left me without any feeling to be honest. I have watched a couple of them, but wasn't so impressed of the acting. In my humble opinion there is not much real englishman kind of class in Daniel Craig.

I have Pierce as my no 2, he is also a very believable looking agent.

Dalton
Connery
Brosnan/Craig
Lazenby
Moore

^for me.

I liked 007 long before I liked MV, and I could write something now about how much overlap there is between Bond and Vice (Sonny's name is James, for crying out loud...), but I don't know which part of the forum I'd put it in!

Agree 100%. Brosnan got stuck with bad scripts on the whole (it's sad when the video game is better than some of the movies...). The literary Bond had both class and a vicious streak, and Brosnan can easily play both (you see this in movies like The Fourth Protocol and The November Man).
