miamijimf
Those two signs sure look like a match to me. Hard to believe that there were two identical chop suey signs. What am I missing?

The current sign doesn't say "Chinese Kitchen" at the bottom. Also, no bay windows sticking out onto the sidewalk. Also, second floor windows are much higher and different in number. Yes the buildings dont quite match - just odd there were two Chop Suey restaurants in Los Angeles
Matt5
Came across this beaut image of Villa Vizcaya online we see featured in this episode, as well as many others.
Matt5
Heart of Night was the first episode filmed for the 5th Season in the Summer of 1988 and featured Villa Vizcaya in a number of scenes. Can anyone recall if this location was featured again in Season 5 , I can’t.

Matt5
Nice day at Vizcaya today my first time since 2003. A nice afternoon with some warm winter sunshine shining on many Miami Vice locations and Charles Deering history. I’ve visited the Deering Estate 4 or so times so this was a treat today to return to Vizcaya in Coconut Grove. Matt5
I was hoping to get a picture of the goats head on the steps as we see in “Whatever Works” for you chaps but it wasn’t there, another Vice location changed forever.

Tom
I just wanted to highlight how nice and accurate @miamijimfs recent pic of the Castillo house is. Left is the episode, right is Jim´s pic of August 2021. See below. P.S. the first scene was originally so dark (shot against the sun), I had to brighten it up a lot in order to see the vertical wooden parts of the house nicely. Tom
Production rundown of this episode, first shot in season5, but aired as third, after the Burnett arc. Filmed 15-23 September 1988. There is no indication in the dailies that the scenes with Crockett in the opening (scene 7) was filmed with this episode, as DJ is marked as on travel. There are lots of scenes that were filmed, but cut before airing. Read along. Location list on 12 September before filming. One location (ext. romantic restaurant was TBA at this point). r Day1: Thu 15 September, filmed at Villa Viscaya from 7:18 am (scene 105, last scene with May Ying walking away) until 7:30pm (Quito party and car attack in teaser). In the script the final scene was planned on a beach and there was much more dialogue that was all cut (see filming script pages below). Also Castillo walked away in the end, which does not make sense to me. Day 2: Fri 16 September, filming at Embassy Suites Hotel. Filmed 10:31 am until 9pm. A major romantic restaurant scene with Castillo and May Ying was also filmed there, but cut from the final product.e Gina and Trudy sit outside in a car and Cortez/Hernandez (Rivas men) are tailing them. More than 3 pages in the script were filmed, but cut (scenes 46-56). See all pages below. I can just assume that it was cut as the episode went to long. Day 3: Monday 19 September, filmed at Castillo´s house from 10:56 am until 10:48pm. Two scenes (sc61 where Castillo watches May Ying sleeping and scene 65 with Tubbs and Castillo), were filmed , but cut. Day 4: Tue 20 September, filmed 10:57am until 9:18pm in studio (Thai restaurant, OCB scenes, Gray´s office). In parallel, on that day the second unit filmed several smaller scenes in this episode (ext. street, ext. Miami airport, ext. oriental street, the telephone booth scene=ext. Highway and ext. romantic restaurant and the May Ying abduction scene. For these scenes some main actors were picked up at the studio throughout the day and brought to locations (Dodge Island, Harbor Drive/Crandon Bvd, Bill Baggs State Park, Horatio´s restaurant parking lot, Knollwood Drive/Island Drive) 2nd unit: Day5. Wed 21 September, filmed at Rivas house and the Castillo/May Ying car drive (filmed on a tow car) nearby from 1:30pm until 10:59pm. One scene (77) was filmed but cut (see below). Scene 78 another Gray office scene in studio was also filmed but cut. Day 6: Thur 22 September, filmed near Miami airport from 4:00pm until 4am, the Ma Sek prepares poison scene, the warehouse shooting and exterior of the romantic restaurant (cut scene) Day 7: filming at Merril Stevens Boat Yard, from 5:55pm until 2:40 am. EJO was partly doubled in the fight scene by Jeff Moldovan (martial arts instructor, also played in Whatever works and To have and to hold). ENJOY the insights. More episodes to come. I think these production rundowns including dropped scenes give a new and much better insight how VICE was done. It also transports the magic that the final outcome we see on TV was often product of a last minute decision (e.g. someone must have decided to alter the last scene in the script and let May Ying go away).
