That’s one image I certainly wish still looked the same today! :fireworks:

One of the things I like about Vice is that many of their story lines were inspired by real events.  These stories (modified of course) were not just the product of someone's imagination.  In a way Vice keeps history alive.

Today Hurricane Ian will attack the Gulf Coast of Florida.  Stay safe Jim, et al.

Yesterday Ian spawned a tornado north of Miami.  The tornado flipped over some airplanes at North Perry Airport.  We saw that airport in "Trust Fund Pirates".

Here are some photos of Miami in 1984, mostly Edgewater just north of downtown.  We've already seen many of these, including the Lady Susan boat from the "Brother's Keeper" payphone scene.

Here is Brickell Avenue looking north across the river to downtown.  The crummy 2-story apartments and behind/above them DuPont Plaza are both gone now.

A 1989 picture of Downtown Miami, with Bayside Marina in the middle/left, Biscayne Bvd on the right and the long gone Miami Grand prix track where they filmed the end of the Freefall teaser chase at the bottom of the picture.

Downtown Miami skyline pre Miami Vice and pre Wachovia/SE Financial Centre (1983). Same location as Miami Vice opening credits (& Hit List, Whatever Works, Viking Bikers from Hell, Leap of Faith, Golden Triangle Pt.2).

Look at this wonderful art deco building and guess where it is - it is not South Beach, not Miami Beach at all.

I had a nifty little plan of getting a Cuban sandwich at Tinta Y Cafe in Coral Gables and then going to Jose Marti park to eat it, which I did do, with the experience being enhanced by some sketchy characters sizing me up at the park.

Anyway, on the way from North Gables to the park I drove along the SW 5th Street and stumbled into this building. Turns out it was just renovated this year by Dade Heritage Trust while keeping it affordable housing at about $900 rent. It is located at 1401 SW Street, and appears to even have a name - the Eileen - as some buildings do.

Unfortunately there was a lot of trash around this fresh building. You can see in the 4th photo, and I was actually trying to keep it out of the frame, so it was much more there... The whole 5th street was not great in that regard, but had a number of notable buildings, at least the kind I like. For example right across from the Eileen there were 2 buildings in good condition (photo 5), with staircase in the middle with openings into the street - makes for a great mingling space for the neighbors, I like this design.

The last 3 photos I just found online, showing what the Eileen was before. I don't have vocabulary for these pastel hues, but wonder what made them change it from one to the other. But the point of my post is it's great that the Trust finds the budget to do this and keep Miami Dade's tropical art deco alive!

Rewatching Pain & Gain because of Miami, and location identification instinct kicks in. Some are easy - first 3 photos - but some shots don't have any leads, like photo 4. @Tom are you aware if anybody did this movie before? I know Cglide had several movies on his website, but don't see this one.

I've seen that, too.  I think it's terrible that they allow those shady characters hang out in a park with so many family-oriented facilities.   That should be a great place for kids to run around.

Fun movie, I have it on DVD.  I remember quickly scanning for Vice or historically significant locations but will have to check it again since I may have missed one or two.

Yeah, for example the Bacardi Building used is notable.

I also identified in one of the early shots the pool area to be that of the building in the 1st attached photo - the Deauville Beach Resort (said to be 'iconic'), currently under reconstruction. https://deauvillebeachresortmiami.com/

The gym in the movie is also a notable building in that it is a small office building yet has a pool on the roof. How more Miami can one be :) Currently not in best shape either (second photo). It's 8000 Biscayne Blvd.

I have not seen more than the first 20 minutes of the movie yet some time ago and then stopped watching. So I have to watch it again over the weekend to identify some more locations, like the 4th pic.

But many of this movie´s locations are well documented and were easy to find: e.g.

  • Mark's Dry Cleaners in Sunset Harbour (the gang's warehouse)
  • the zebra-striped Wynwood Building 2750 NW3 Ave (strip club)
  •  (see the Bacardi Building 2100 Biscayne Bvd (bank)
  • Admiral Vee Motel at 8000 Biscayne Bvd as the gym
  • Tony Shalhoub´s/Mark Wahlberg´s house 13025 Mar Street, Coral Gables (see pics below)
  • the bridge next to the Ankara Motel at 2300 Collins Ave (chase with The Rock), also used in One way ticket
  • Frank Griga´s house, 2900 N Bay Rd, Miami Beach (see pics)

Silliness atop a South Beach parking garage in 2016 came up in my phone memories while ago. I hope someone gets a laugh. :)

Nice! It could've come right out of the 2006 film (gasp!). It reminds me of a picture my wife took of me back in 2011 in Las Vegas atop the Stratosphere. By the way, that "Bikes for the World" t-shirt was my favorite for so many years. So comfy.

In the opening scene you see this building across the street from the gym.  This is Howie Wong's restaurant in "Golden Triangle".

Schlotzky's Deli was 2915 Biscayne Blvd.  This is the NCR building visible (for a few frames) in "Brother's Keeper" in the "In the Air Tonight" scene.

  • Bahamas bank interior - Dupont Building
  • detective's house - 8591 N Bayshore Drive in Miami Shores
  • Kershaw's motel - Seven Seas at 5940 Biscayne Blvd
  • Johnson's Firearms - 150 NW 36th St. - https://goo.gl/maps/5Zasm9Bo1GNmqfgA8

The Bahamas exterior scenes are interesting.  I couldn't locate them.

The Griga home is where they filmed Hulk Hogan's family reality show "Hogan Knows Best".  I recognized the unique stepping stone path across the pool.

LOL You stole my thunder, I am through the whole movie now but you have stated most locations already!  If you are that fast you should be able to find the last 10 unknown VICE locations i a day or two? :p

The Griga house IS Hulk Hogan´s house he built for himself for a lot of money (e.g. 13 bathrooms).

Adrian´s house he bought for his wife has a door number of 1082 and has an Art Deco style that looks like Miami Beach to me.

The money bag heist where The Rock gets shot at around 1:16 into the movie was filmed at the corner James Ave and Lincoln Rd, Miami Beach. See pic below. But during the end of the chase it magically jumps to location in front of the Deauville Hotel at 6701 Collins Ave (where the significant roof of the Deauville was recently destroyed).

I do not like Bay´s nervous editing style as they use fast cuts all the time even during conversations so you lose orientation very easily and cannot enjoy locations. Thus most locations do not have any effect in this movie although perfectly selected.

They also used well known and obvious locales like the Shelborne in South Beach, the Fontainbleau and the Mac Arthur Causeway in short scenes throughout the movie, as they used many locations and edited then many short scenes together.

Rare view on Miami taken in Oct 1986 from the Marriott looking southwest.

We see the famous Coppertone ad at Biscayne Bvd, the Freedom Tower, the Miami Grand Prix racetrack south of Mac Arthur Causeway where the Freefall teaser chase ended and more

The Bahamas bank building has me stumped.  There aren't very many Classical buildings of this type in Miami.  The rounded front is unique.

These buildings are seen in the chase and are probably near the bank:
