may sound stupid to some, but tonight i discovered what GTS means. it means Gran Turismo Spider. Gran turismo, which can be translated into grand tourer, or grande routière. if you wonder what is a grand tourer. it's a car that is continent crossing capable, with 2 persons on board, and their luggages, in comfort. and which is capable of delivering a good engine performance regarless of the country speed limitations

I had heard years ago that GT was for Grand Touring. Probably very similar in meaning with the dropped letter.

Thanks for sharing pal

The "spider" or "spyder" part of GTS means it is a convertible in Italian.  A GTB means a Berlinetta, or hard top, again in Italian.  There are other abbreviations as well.  The O in GTO, as in the Ferrari 250 GTO, refers to the Italian word "omologato" translating as "confirmed" or "approved".  It is the same as the English word homolgation, meaning a vehicle has been approved for competition based on various criteria, therefore can race.  Thus GTO in Italian is Gran Turismo Omologato.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homologation

I'm not so sure about that.  I found the same explanation on several other websites as well.

From: http://www.classic-car-history.com/pontiac-gto-history.htm

GTO Name

The GTO name was the idea of Pontiac chief engineer John Delorean. It was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, and since Ferrari had not patented the name in North America, it was free to use. Although many believe that GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato ("grand tourer homologated"), Pontiac enthusiasts contend it stands for "Pontiac Grand Tempest Option".

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_GTO

The name, which was DeLorean's idea, was inspired by the Ferrari 250 GTO, the successful race car. It is an Italian abbreviation for Gran Turismo Omologato ("grand tourer homologated"), which means officially certified for racing in the grand tourer class. In reality, the Pontiac GTO was never really a certified Grand Tourer race car. Internally, it was initially called the "Grand Tempest Option", one of many automobiles in the Pontiac line up with a 'Grand' in it.

If you owned a Pontiac GTO, that's all you burned, Gas, Tires and Oil :)
