summer84
Miami Vice is best remembered for its style with its flashy fashion, colors, music, cinematography, cars, boats, the city, use of numerous guest stars, that's what made it stand out from other police dramas at the time. It was hip and up to date, MTV style police drama shot in the style of a feature film. Integrating elements from a music video into a TV show with music and visuals and mood telling the story instead of just use of dialogue. These are the things that people usually point out, when talking about the show/it's impact and that's not a bad thing. But the most recognized highly rated episodes had both style and substance, episodes like "Brother's Keeper" "Out Where The Buses Don't Run," "Calderone's Return," Bought and Paid For" etc. I think MV had both style and substance, although there were episodes where the style overshadowed the story. And episodes where the story was the focus and the style was pushed in the background. It had to be balanced out to work.
