"Miami Vice" by Steven Sanders is the best I've seen when it comes to taking an even-handed look at the show and its legacy. It's analysis, not a fanboy rehash, and he gets the small things right.

Agree, good book.  Have you seen mine or Tom's at LuLu.com?

„Making of Miami Vice“ by Trish Janeshutz  is the best book for behind the scenes aspects.

I noticed it was published quite recently (2010). Did the author directly experience the Miami Vice years or the book is about reports from other people?

Steven Sanders has written about the timeless story Miami Vice tells and how this story is told, not so much about the concret conditions under which the show was made. If you're interested in the latter, there are other books.

Sanders of course watched all the episodes himself thoroughly. And he grew up in Miami. He writes, as he explains himself, about the cultural, darmatic and philosophical meaning of MV.  Especially he is interested in the topic "Neo noir". The book is nevertheless very enjoyable to read.

I think here you can read a sample:

And here you can find some information about the chapters:
