Ms. or Mrs.?

I've got a special question. In my manuscripts I always write "Ms." and not "Mrs." Now something claimed that this is wrong. Therefore I ask you about the right form of writing.

In my view it comes down to preference...often the character's preference if you're talking about fiction. I know some women who prefer Ms regardless of the situation, and others who get annoyed if you don't use Mrs. or even Miss. Ms is a good generic if you're not aware of the marital status of someone.

In my experience older married women prefer Mrs.  The use of Ms. only came into popular use in the past four or five decades for single or married women (probably related to the women's Lib movement) but either one seems to be acceptable these days.
