Stinger390X Posted June 12, 2009 Report Share Posted June 12, 2009 I used to build those back in the 70's for real!We took stock c3 chassis and added to the roof line to extend the roofs to make a small lift gate for a station wagon effect. I built six or seven of them when I worked at the corvette shop in London back then in the late 70's. I never did a Daytona but the Corvette looks the same.I like the glass tops. Stinger390X Posted June 12, 2009 Report Share Posted June 12, 2009 I wish now that I had taken pictures however back then doing the customizing was just my 8-5 job and I thought no more about it than that!Living in London there were a lot of rich guys and many drove Corvettes. Well you know the story...fall in love...get married...."ok honey, time to buy a station wagon so get rid of the Vette"!Lots of guys wanted to keep their Vettes so bad that we also did a conversion kit and added 16 inches to the chassis of a C3 to make room for a back seat for the kids!. I built a few of these things and they looked a bit weird to me as they had a very large dogleg (the part of the wheel opening behind the door around the rear wheels) but they did have a back seat for the kiddies!!!After I built one, lots of orders came in and I built more over the next following year. I actually saw one of the Station wagon vettes about seven weeks ago running across town in Toronto. Haven't seen the stretched ones in about a decade now and I wonder where they all went? We did lots of limos and the vettes were few and far between the main jobs. I do recal making about six or maybe seven, but remember it was in the late 70's.........(long time ago!)I only built a few wagons too (withought the stretch) but a couple are still around but rarely seen. They are all in Ontario (or originally from the London area) but I have never seen any in the states?If I remember my boss purchased the "kits" from a company in FLA so there must be more around but like I said, I have never seen any other than my creations on ocassion at the summer outdoor car shows around the province. than a fan of the 3rd and 4th revision the targa top version of the C3 is definitely a good looking car and that looks to be on par with it (and the wire wheels certainly help!)plus there was far That one looks fabulous but no ...the ones I built had solid sides made of fibreglass and had only a rear lift window. They were a bit more square as well, not as sleek as the one in the pic. My boss had about a 1/2 dozen of then in the back yard of the bodyshop back in the day and I built one out of the other six or so that were salvagable for parts. I like the look of it from some angles but not others and I tend to like the look of the earlier jensen made ones with the weaved gril (ala The Saint) to the latter ones.and Stinger you wouldnt happen to have any old photos of the Corvette conversion you guys put together back then lying around somewhere would you? Had a 67 Falcon with a Mustang 289HP. Had some Fairlanes as well as LTD's both large and small models. My piston-head buddies used to bust my chops for driving Wagoons but I loved them all! In 1975 Chinetti, with the help of a gentlemen by the name of Gene Garfinkle, created a layout for the car you see here – the Ferrari 365GTB/4 Shooting Brake. The car was built by a company called Panther Westwinds who are located in the U.K. and features modifications other than just the addition of the elongated rear half. All the gauges for instance have moved to the cars center stack and are slightly angled towards the driver.
