very true, Fman. even the beatles were inspired by his genius (said paul mccartney).the les paul/mary ford records are some of the greatest ever made. it would be hard to remake those even with today's technology.les was a really nice guy too. i think his mom lived to be like 102 or 104 or something. and she drank a beer everyday, tim!there's a GREAT documentary about him called "chasing sound". if you ever get a chance to see it, it's probably the best music doc i've ever seen. even if you're not a fan, it's very entertaining.

I did a custom paint job on an original Les Paul for a customer a few years ago. What a great built guitar. Thing was solid as a rock and the workmanship was fabulous. It took a while for me to disassemble all the parts as the customer was very fussy, but I airbrushed a mural on it and clearcoated it. looked good when it was done.Les made many breakthroughs in electric guitar technology and we owe a lot to him for that. I enjoy music very much but sadly I never followed through in learning guitar properly. I dabble but I am terrible.Kim Mitchell (from Max Webster fame) is now a DJ at our local rock Radio station in Toronto. He had a tribute to Les today and played a lot of stuff live on the air and explained how the different things that Les invented... sounded like. Mitchell is an excellent guitar player too............

I can still remember seeing him play with his wife, Mary Ford, on TV. Sorry to lose someone so special to our culture!

Yes, MJCMMV, I have a video from 1978 or so, of Les Paul playing at a college in New Jersey with Tal Farlow, Bucky Pizzarelli & other jazz guitarists. He wasn't as technical but his improvisation was melodic & beautiful! Les Paul was funny too, calling Bucky .....Pizzeria. They were dressed very casual for the concert & Les said, "Don't mind the way we're dressed, we were just putting a new roof on the house!" He'd play a note & make a musical joke in the songs. He also invented the reverb & echo by sending his music through a tunnel built into the side of his house for recording. He also first did sound on sound & multi-voice recording . My friend, who played rock cover tunes , used Les Paul licks in his playing! I hope Tony Mottola, Chet Atkins, Wes Montgomery, Johnny Smith, Les Paul & so many other greats are having a big jam session in Heaven, along with my Dad & my Uncle.

the documentary i spoke of stated that django reinhardt was les' biggest influence. i never noticed how much of django's style is in les' playing til they said that. now i hear it in almost every solo.

Musicians offer their thoughts on the death of Les Paul:___"Les Paul, along with Leo Fender, the most important developer of the electric guitar. He actually taught himself to play guitar in order to demonstrate his electronic theories. WOW!! All of us owe an unimaginable debt to his work and his talent. Mary Ford didn't hurt either." — Keith Richards___"Les Paul set a standard for musicianship and innovation that remains unsurpassed. He was the original guitar hero, and the kindest of souls. Last October I joined him onstage at The Iridium club in NYC, and he was still shredding. He was and still is an inspiration to us all." — Joe Satriani___"He was a genius inventor, musical innovator, and a wonderful person. Without the advances he pioneered, the recording sciences and the electric guitar would have been left years behind. I will miss him so much." — Joan Jett___"I have a mix of emotions today. On one hand, I am deeply saddened at Les Paul's passing, and on the other a feeling of incredible gratitude and awe for his unquantifiable contribution to the world of music. His name adorns so many of the creations that I communicate through every night out here on the road ... He is also very present every time I set foot in the studio and am able to lay multiple tracks as I record, when I use echo, etc. The list of his inventions, in addition to his famous signature model Gibson, are extraordinary. I also feel that even in his nineties, the fact he was still playing every Monday night in New York is perhaps the most beautiful and inspiring achievement of all." — Keith Urban___"Without Les Paul, we would not have rock and roll as we know it. His inventions created the infrastructure for the music and his playing style will ripple through generations. He was truly an architect of rock and roll." — Terry Stewart, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum___"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Les Paul. His influence on my life, as on the lives of countless others, will be felt throughout eternity. It was an honor to know him and to work with him. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and will mourn along with musicians throughout the world." — Jose Feliciano___"It's kinda heavy, but it just felt good in your hands. The electronics that Gibson developed that went into it later just gave it a sound and a feel that is unparalleled." — Joe Chambers, founder of the Musicians Hall of Fame based in Nashville, Tenn.___"Les Paul and Mary Ford were among my most favorite musicians in the 50s. He was the first guy to do multi-guitar multitrack recording and that turned me on to guitars and stacking vocals for our records." — Brian Wilson___ "Les Paul was a shining example of how full one's life can be, he was so vibrant and full of positive energy. I'm honored and humbled to have known and played with him over the years, he was an exceptionally brilliant man." — Slash ___ "Les is single handedly responsible for the direction and evolution of the modern rock movement. Period. If you are a fan of modern music, you owe Les Paul an enormous THANK YOU!" — Dave Navarro
