29th August 2009, 3:49am---Toronto Police have caught up to a man that allegedly used the alias of 80s celebrity Don Johnson during a rental scam 22 years ago.Back in April 1987 - while the real-life Johnson was charming audiences on TV's Miami Vice – at least 12 families rented the upper-floor apartment in a Tuscarora Dr. home to the bogus Johnson. Cops say he also used the alias Bill Johnson and Billy Johnson. The man placed ads in newspaper offering an apartment for rent, police said. When people arrived to see the apartment he acted like the landlord and took their deposit cash. When the would-be renters tried to move in they found out the man wasn't the landlord at all but by then, he had moved out, police said.Cops figure at least 12 families were duped after handing over just under $19,000.This month, 33 Division officers tracked down the man wanted for the alleged crimes.William "Billy" Bear, 51, of Toronto is charged with nine counts of fraud over $5,000, fraud under $5,000 and failing to comply with recognizance. He'll be back in court Sept. 18.
