#11 Little Prince

A good episode - Im sure we all know the bar sign (close up shot) from  the teaser was the former Peter Miller Hotel, Collins and 20th Street, Miami Beach. The drive scene later in the episode between Tubbs and Mary sure looks like Crandon Bvld in Key Biscayne, towards the end of the scene there is a small building/ house.

That was a great find! I always suspected that they filmed there as the polo match was filmed nearby. I also suspected that the final scene was filmed on Key Biscayne. I found no definitive proof, but my best guess is Arthur J Lamb road south of the sewage plant. See my pic comparison below. The power lines, their distance to the street and left shoulders with type of vegetation (no palms on both sides) match perfectly there (this is the only spot on Key Biscayne with that exact match), but no clear match is the open area on the right and the two structures we see (a white building and a big house with brown gabled roof. Remarkable is also that the right side of the street has very low vegetation on some small hills like usually found on golf courts. I found no other area on KB with a better fit.

Interesting details that I never noticed.  Key Biscayne/Virginia Key makes so much sense as a filming location, but I don't see anything that matches.  One lane each direction, power lines on the left, minimal vegetation on the right plus some structures.

We knew that the little Prince house was destined for destruction by the owners (and the helpless county commission could not prevent it), but you will not believe what tasteless glass shoebox they built there instead .:hot:

That seems to be some kind of vessel at the dock edge, not the home.  I’ve seen architectural drawings of the new home and it’s not much better, but that’s not it.

Found: A big little location. Being from season 1 I have wondered about this site for years. Now I am amusingly annoyed that it was used in the 1981 movie Absence of Malice and we can see (now that I know to look for it) the Evan garage in the background but did not recognize it. Without further delay, the site that had eluded me for over a decade, the corner café where they spot Royco and start the chase. Located on the SE corner of the intersection of W Flagler and W 12th Ave. A long way from South Beach.

http://www.miamivicelocations5.org/wpimages/wpbd707ef4_05.jpgNote store across street has three steps up along the whole store front. Rare in Miami.http://www.miamivicelocations5.org/wpimages/wpdaf28510.png

They round the corner and if you look closely you can see the Evan garage.

This has been bulldozed.  It was last known as "El Cocotero" restaurant.  The Star Island house is gone.  The entire warehouse area was razed.

We never did find out what happened to Mark Jorgenson.  Maybe he's still in Miami burning down locations as revenge?

When Crockett, Tubbs, and Castillo walk to their cars, we know the location but not the specific details:

2 NEW LOCATIONS FOUND: POLO MATCH AND FINAL SCENE (Highway scene when Mark stops a truck), Royal Palm Polo Club, Bridleway Way/NE- of Clint Moore Rd/Powerline Rd, Boca Raton (long gone, today Bridleway Trail)

@airtommy @miamijimf @Dadrian

Thanks to some joker who is starting to sell more scripts plus location sheets/production notes on ebay for 750  bucks per episode (https://www.ebay.com/itm/404482255948?hash=item5e2d056c4c:g:BWcAAOSwDbVk~Cmh) we now know that the polo match was NOT filmed in Crandon Park as assumed by us earlierm but in Boca Raton. The driving instructions on the location sheet reveal the location.

NEW LOCATION FOUND: the Record office (exterior, establishing shot)

This is the ABC Entertainment Center at 2040 Ave of the Stars in Century City(CA. It was opened in 1972 and sadly razed in 2003.

The stock footage used in VICE is hard to impossible to exactly recreate on old photos, as it was shot from the back of the left building (see red arrow on comparison pics below. But the twin building with its unique top and facade pattern can be seen in VICE and matches well with old archive pics from the front of the ensemble.

LOCATIONS INSIGHTS

based on the (partial)look on location call sheets and driving instructions to locations - see below all sheets sorted daily -driving instructions sorted daily from right to left and daily location call sheets from left to right) - we can learn some interesting details.

Bildschirmfoto2023-10-25um21_55_32.thumb.png.f7b7f262ab79b0589cbc1d3b043aa9ab.png

Bildschirmfoto2023-10-25um22_04_27.thumb.png.d44a1b2e7703e20de7bab27124b3b4c8.png

The polo scenes were filmed in two places very far apart: On Wednesday 14 November they filmed at Crandon Park, the polo field scenes with the spectators and the caddy drive with Tubbs and Mary at nearby Crandon Bvd (Thu 15 November was last day filmed in studio). On Friday 16 November they filmed with second unit at Palm Beach, with only Paul Roebling, Mitchell Lichtenstein and the respective stunt doubles on location.

Bildschirmfoto2023-10-26um10_26_44.thumb.png.e8f6169805ebdcfc7a9f0e70391e4cf8.png

The polo scenes without any glimpse on the spectators and the tents were all filmed at Royal Palm Polo Club in Palm Beach, as was the stunt scene with Mark sr. pulling his son off the horse and the final scene with Mark hitchhiking. See daily location sheet above. Bobby Foxworth and Artie Malesci were the stunt double in this scene. I carefully watched the polo scenes and the difference between Palm Beach scenes (no palm trees visible in background) and Crandon Park (Coconut palm trees in background) are obvious, bur only if you look for it specifically. Nice editing back and forth on selected angles created the impression all was filmed at the same polo field.

Palm Beach inserts/some scenes+stunt:

Bildschirmfoto2023-10-26um10_49_58.thumb.png.cbaab444c1fd7dbc91da99bc9f4cc5c8.png

Crandon Park with lots of coconut palms in background:

Bildschirmfoto2023-10-26um10_50_56.thumb.png.3506d8a920c0a75e781cfef492ffb9f5.png

The look on the driving instructions on Wed 14 November shows that they filmed in Crandon Park. The only location of this episode that remains unclear is the hall of records where Crockett investigates the owner of the drug drop warehouse (32 NW 7 Street, Studio of Lightning, the sign can be seen in the background of several scenes)

As there is a "Company moves to..." after the polo scenes on the respective location call sheet, but NO other driving instructions that day (despite there is one for all other days, even if the location is the same, like the two days at 42 Star Island) I assume that they filmed near the Crandon Park. The offices are no studio set (missing on the other sheets and too shabby/crammed for a typical set).

On Fri 16 November there is a separate driving instructions sketch leading to Palm Beach (posted earlier in this thread).

No, of course not. As Crockett would say: do I look like I fell off a cabbage truck?:p

not a recreation of the correct angle but this blurry video cap shows the side of the building we see in the episode, right after its construction had finished:

It's also somewhat visible in this aerial shot:

Lots of TV shows filmed there, the building with the arrow used to house the Playboy club. And the little triangle patch of land on the right of the picture just past what looks like a freeway, but is actually Olympic Blvd, that's where Nakatomi Plaza/Fox Plaza was built.

That is very interesting @Tom

I visited this location a few years ago (Crandon park field) to match up . Then it wasn’t 100% confirmed like today.
So angles and backgrounds are what we see below?

Exactly. The coconut palm background we see on some polo scenes (the ones filmed at Crandon) were at the northern part of the field, the tent with Crockett, Mary Mac and the spectators were on the southern edge of the field. The second pic above is shot towards northeast, i.e. we can nearly even see the sea in the background, behind the coconut palm trees.

Over the years these polo scenes always looked odd to me and I even recognized different background, but I never assumed they filmed in Palm Beach for it. Now with the location sheets all makes sense. Coconut palm trees to not grow well in Palm Beach as it is quite north already and the polo field is far inland. Coconut palms only grow well near the sea.

UNKNOWN LOCATION FOUND: Hall of Records filmed at the office of the Key Biscayne Hotel

I think I solved the mystery about the last unknown location, the hall of records scene where Crockett investigates the owner of the companies involved.

Again, detailed scrutiny of the scene paid off. The clerk (same lady playing the fierce customs officer in Stone´s war and the alligator wrangler at Crockett´s pier in an early episode) uses the phone in a close up.

The reverse check on the own number (305) 361-5431 on the phone leads to the Key Biscayne Hotel (see article link below from 25 Nov 1984, nearly the exact time of filming of this episode), also used in Score -filmed 2 weeks earlier - and Out where the buses don´t run later in season 2.

The hotel is very close to the Crandon Park polo location filmed on the very same day before company moved to the hall of records location (shown on location call sheet of Wed 14 November 1984). The clock in the office shows the time with 14:50 (2:50 pm). That fits time-wise as well after they filmed the polo scenes in Crandon Park and the cadillac driving scene most likely the whole morning before. The clock is seen in another one of the 4 scenes filmed in the office, showing 2:35 pm (14:35). That also explains the missing driving instructions to this second location of the day that I have mentioned earlier, as it was so close to the polo field just a mile via Crandon Bvd that it was not necessary to issue one.

The Key Biscayne Hotel was at 701 Ocean Drive, Key Biscayne and was torn down in 1987.

Just wanted to add that the the two triangular towers in the photo posted were also used as the exterior for the offices of Remington Steele in that series.
